I'm Emi (they/them) and this is a blog for stuff for games about gates- trying to contain my stuff over here instead of on main as much as possible for the sake of folks who don't want to see it. This is not a spoiler free blog and I'll sometimes reblog or post 18+ content here, so don't follow if that's a concern!!! You can ask me to tag anything.Emi is short for Emissary. This is from my main blog's url.

One of the funniest things about Ketheric Thorm as a character is that they made a villain who has all the clich茅 signs of being the "redeemable" one (dead wife, nice daughter who cares about him, outwardly sane compared to his coworkers, has a dog), so you go through all these dialogue checks and persuasion rolls believing that you can turn this one good, but every time you hit him the "please, this isn't who your wife wants you to be; you can do better, " something happens to grandpa that makes him double down on being bad, transforming into a more progressively evil version of himself every time. It's like the DM is actively trolling the players. Oh, you believe some rando can reset this centuries-old man's moral compass with just a few reminders about his dead wife??? You naive, ignorant, trope-poisoned fool, I'm making him worse!
#and then he kills himself in front of you <3#I do like it a lot I don't really think it feels like anything 'trolling' the player. it's just sincerely excellent characterization#like a lot of people can't be calmly and rationally persuaded of things. doubling down instead of changing when unnerved feels very real#and it feels like when you get under his skin after putting in all the effort to try to get through to him he still won't put in that effor#to make amends in his life even if he might have some glimmer of recognition that he's done wrong#he'd rather just run from it to the very end. fucking never actually doing the work.#killing himself doesn't 'redeem' him through solving some problem either it's just pure dodging#he's far from my favorite character in the game but it's such a great moment and I remember it very fondly#bg3#ketheric thorm#cw suicide mention#in my notes. I guess.

a character type i'm really into is the ex-something - exile, obviously, but also anyone who used to have a role that was also an identity and now does not: ex-mage, ex-assassin, ex-monarch --
it's about loss of identity and recreation of identity; it's about how being an ex-something is impossible because the ghost of what you were haunts what you are now; it's about reshaping the way you see the world and yourself in the world.

One of the less talked about Larian missteps with Wyll's romance is how much of it is gate-kept by Karlach's fate.
You want to adopt a kid with Wyll? Only available in the Grand Duke ending, which is only achieved if Wyll doesn't go to Avernus with Karlach (and a romanced Tav can't go with Karlach either).
You want to see any of his special end-of-game scenes, where you discuss the future? They get overridden by the cutscene of the three of you arriving in Avernus.
No other romance option has this issue. You can send Wyll and Karlach on their merry way to Avernus and still have a nice scene with your romance option at the end of the game. It's only Wyll's romance that's impacted this way. His already limited content is locked behind letting a fan-favorite character either die or become a mindflayer.
No wonder only 600 people adopted a kid with Wyll.
#i love karlach and wyll's friendship but it does sometimes feel like wyll's there to hold up karlach's plot#<- prev you really hit the nail on the head here#it does feel like his own ending is put on hold for her#I didn't romance him but it was Stark the ways anything going on with Wyll got usurped by him volunteering to go with her#and based on... nothing that had happened in my game.#I'd never seen a single instance of them interacting after her recruitment. never took them out together.#so what it REALLY felt like was 'oh gee karlach needs support so you can feel good about her ending but Avernus is a lot to commit to'#'let's give the player an easy out where an unimportant companion volunteers to do it instead'#bg3#sword coast discourse post
