Smoke & Mirrors
IIII - The End
Tumblr media
I am very happy with the final result, I think adding some alternate magic tricks would add to the overall effect of the piece. I also think adding some lighting elements would be very effective and make the theatre feel more like a real building rather than a model, but I am unable to do this at this time.

Smoke & Mirrors
III - Making Cont.
Tumblr media
I moved on to working on more of the aesthetic work. I used a table runner for the curtains, as it was the most cost effective way of getting thick velvet fabric. I proceeded to sew the curtains onto another piece of card to keep the shape, and then glued it onto the stage front.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The stalls were made using card, coloured black using markers and stuck teal velvet onto the backs. I used the same fabric as a running carpet in the aisle. I found this really helped to break up the large area of "wood" and add come extra interest.
Tumblr media
I made small card busts as audience members and a full sized Magician with a fabric straight jacket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are removable and could be swapped with different designs in the future. I would like to make alternate magic tricks and magicians in future.

Smoke & Mirrors
II - Making
I began to construct my theatre, first creating the frames of the stage and side balconies. I used thick cardstock for the sturdier parts, regular corrugated card for thicker, but less structural sections (such as the sides of the stage and the decorative "valance" in front of the curtain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The decorative balconies were made of cereal box cardboard to allow them to curve easily, and also to reduce weight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I began to paint my theatre, opting for a colour palette especially reminiscent of the Empire. I noticed many theatre interiors were predominantly red (1, 2, 3) and chose to use different colours to create a more unique design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the "wooden floor" baseboard and the stage I used layers of pencil and alcohol markers. The markers absorbed differently on the denser board vs. the corrugated, meaning I had to layer the lighter markers a lot more on the corrugated card.

Entry Project -Smoke & Mirrors
I - Planning
I thought about the project brief "Smoke and Mirrors" for a while before starting my project. I had a few ideas before settling on my final piece.
The first idea was to create something like this using embroidery, however after trying to make one piece I found the result was incredibly time consuming for a dissatisfying end result.
I continued my research, along with my hobby of film watching, and began watching many early films featuring camera trickery and editing.
I watched a Georges Méliès short film from 1896 'The House of the Devil' and was pondering if I could possibly make a short film using similar techniques and themes.
I came across this poster for the film along with a similar film 'Les Spectres'.
Tumblr media
I love this poster style and design and looked up the "Théâtre Robert-Houdin" in the hopes of finding more (there are many more, all of them are brilliant).
It was then I came across this.
A model of the theatre made by Méliès' son.
I loved this idea and began to wonder if I could make my own.
Tumblr media
I started out with a crude sketch to mark my idea for my own model.
I created my own designs based upon many theaters I had seen, both in person and otherwise. I was especially inspired by Burnley Empire Theatre, a local theatre which is currently being renovated.

Marie Antoinette inspired dress. I researched the historical context of the dress along with the impact fashion had on the changing world, and how this ties into more modern topics such as the fall of British textiles and the impact of fashion on the planet.

Sash made for my Marie Antoinette chemise dress. The fabric was first dyed a light blue using Butterfly Pea powder, I then screen printed images and text onto the fabric before embroidering various flowers onto the sash. The finished sash featured a hanging section of bundle dyed fabric (see other post for more examples) and a small sample of crocheted raw wool.

Some sketchbook work exploring themes of nature. I used many different techniques, including watercolour (image 1), markmaking and impressions using leaves (image 2), screen printing (image 4), and wet felting (image 5). I also used embroidery throughout, including using felting wool as yarn to achieve a different texture (image 3, embroidery on crochet)
