i headcanon like a LOT of the isle to be illiterate and innumerate, and to have handwriting that's more or less equivalent to a toddler. ik that it's canon that the isle had a school, but for kids who prided themselves for being non conformist and rule breaking, i doubt that any of them actually went to school that often - especially for those that had to spend time stocking their parents stores and what not. and i don't think the quality of education would've been that high on the isle anyway, considering that canonically the villains are bad at anything productive or constructive for a good society
for instance, i think that carlos and evie are the only ones fully literate in the core4. i think carlos would've been one of those kids that just taught themself to read at like. age 3 or 4. the same way he ended up teaching himself how to hack and whatever. and evie was homeschooled by the evil queen who probably would've taught her how to write because it's important in the courtship process for writing letters to her prince, then for writing declarations and whatever as a queen
i think that mal wouldn't have a reading level any higher than like. a 6 year old. which is when she like made her little isle gang and what not. i think the only words she could read and spell correctly would be the words in the spell book, but not because she learnt how to read words phonetically, she just memorised what each word was, in the way that it's reported that gen alpha are being taught to read. but once she came to auradon and saw it necessary to fit in there (especially as ben's gf) she suddenly became a lot more self conscious about her reading level and spelling ability
i think jay would've had a similar if not worse reading level than mal. and i think uma would have memorised words similar to mal, but instead the ones on her mother's menu, rather than being able to read or write properly
there is also no way in hell that gil is even remotely literate

mal: jane's eyes are blue, right?
carlos: yes, but not just blue, though. when she's really upset, they desaturate to a grey color and if she's exceptionally happy, they shine like sunlight on the calm sea
evie: and when was the last time she smiled?
carlos: last night at about 1:57 am, when i said something that made her laugh
jay: right, and when's my birthday?
carlos: .....
jay: when is my birthday, carlos?!

I'm rewatching D1 for fic reasons and this scene just came to me:
Fairy Godmother: If someone hands you a crying baby, do you: A) Curse It, B) Lock It In A Tower, C) Give It A Bottle, or D) Carve Out Its Heart?
Uma: Trick question, because if the baby's parents are villains, you leave them to rot on the Isle where they learn to fend for themselves.
Mal:
Evie:
Carlos:
Gil:
Harry:
Jay:
Fairy Godmother: Uh–
Uma: I mean, you're the heroes, that's what you guys did. So doesn't that mean it's the right thing to do?
Fairy Godmother: Uma, you've done such a good job today, I actually think you should be exempt from this class for the rest of the semester.
Uma: Actually, I think I'll stay.

Jay: "When have I ever done something rash or irresponsible?"
Evie: "We all keep a list. Mine in order of date."
Mal: "Level of severity. Nice."
Carlos: "Mine is color coded."

And when they were first in the limo and thought they were going over the bridge and into the ocean, Jay grabs everyone and pulls them close.
From the look of Jay’s face, I can say with confidence that catching Carlos when he gets scared is a thing. And it is a d o r a b l e.

I will say this, for all of Disney's Descendants faults, from the conflicting novelization and novel tie-ins to the conflicting plot from one number entry to the other, its still a story about acceptance.
And its what I loved about that franchise.
its the kids of Auradon learning to accept, beyond their prejudices and biases, that the children of the people whom their parents have labeled to be villains are innocent of their parents' crime.
I just hope it will come to a point that they're also a victim of their parents as much as the parents in Auradon were.
Well fanon exists for that so eh

Looking for fic recs starring the core four adjusting to life in Auredon and people being kind of horrified by Isle life. Preferably no ships cause I'm a sucker for found family.

There are a lot of things that is perplexing in the world of Disney's Descendants.
However, I would like to highlight one thing in particular, Ben himself.
No, I don't have the mental capacity to dissect Ben's character in the slightest but rather his ascension to power.
It's no secret that the Kingdom of Auradon (more like an empire really because its a combination of multiple kingdoms) operates differently when it comes to succession of power.
Ben, being a boy still in school, ascends to the throne at 16 as far as I remember. This is what perplexes me.
Yes, Auradon works differently, but how can you expect a teen, still in school, to be a very effective and efficient king? Like really, Adam couldn't wait for a few years before abdicating the throne?
Or at the very least appoint a regent until Ben is out of school?

Descendants 2 except Mal, completly and utterly desperate talks (begs) Audrey for help.
Audrey slams the door on her for the audacity alone but later sees the interview from earlier. She reluctantly agrees to help Mal in becoming a worthy Lady of the Court.
She's down right bitchy but surprisingly helpful and shoots down Mal's insecurities by insulting her.
It's not because Audrey cares about Mal, frankly she'd rather watch her publicly crash and burn. It's because Audrey cares deeply about her kingdom. She knows if Mal suffers now it'll put them all in danger.
Alliances are only as strong as the foundation they were built upon.
And more importantly, it'll make Ben look bad. Audrey might be pissed off, hurt and confused by him dumping her out of nowhere and publicly confessing his love for Mal.
But try as she might she still cares for him.
He broke her heart but she promised to be there for him through it all. So if that means helping Mal live the life that was once rightfully hers, than so be it.
Even if it hurts.
Even if Audrey hates it.
Because that's what princess's do. They stand tall baring the pain with a smile. Her own mother waited a 100 years for her happy ever after.
Audrey will get what she deserves, she'll make sure of it no matter how long it takes.
Mal genuinely starts to warm up to Audrey who begrudgingly starts to warm up to her. But Audrey will never forget nor forgive what Mal and Ben did to her.
A better princess would not hold such a grudge. But Audrey was starting to get used to being second best.

Imagine being Mulan, you notably pretended to be a man so that you could serve in the army in your father's place.
You saved your entire country after your cover is blown and show everyone how girls can kick ass and save the day.
And than years later your daughter isn't allowed to join a school sports team because she's a girl.
Oh oh I would riot. I would get those fireworks and my sword and challenge the coach to a duel. For ever making that a rule, oh I would beat his ass.
Of course it's Chad as well who remembers this rule, Cindy you need come get your son... Now.
