I'm sorry but Joel would 100% try and convince Ellie that Tommy is adopted and was actually found in the trash by Joel's parents. He'd tell her to not bring it up cause it's a sensitive topic for Tommy and all that. And he'd sound so honest, with a pretty solid story and all that she'd actually fall for it.
Picture this.
Ellie suddenly treating Tommy like he's an adopted outsider after buying into Joel's tall tale. She'd act so strange around him, but be too intimidated by Joel's request for secrecy to confront Tommy about the 'truth'. Meanwhile, Joel would be snickering to himself in the background, finding the whole situation hilarious as he watches Ellie put on her most serious, brooding face while poor Tommy looks on in utter bewilderment, completely oblivious as to why Ellie's acting so oddly. The contrast would be comical gold—Tommy's innocent confusion, Ellie's overly dramatic aloofness, and Joel's smug amusement as his little white lie plays out.
