Digimon Adventure Character Screentime
32 posts
A very ambitious project, where I'll attempt to count the screentime of every single main character in Digimon Adventure. Wish me luck and read the FAQ for any questions.

Episode 25: The Sleeping Tyrant! TonosamaGeckomon
Ha! An entire month later, I'm back! I don't know when the next episode will be done, but I am here (kinda queer), so fear not!
Taichi crossed the two hour mark, while Palmon and Gomamon just crossed the hour mark! I'm guessing by next episode Gabumon, Patamon, and certainly Piyomon will be finally crossing the hour mark as well.
There was LOTS of staging Palmon away from Mimi in this one. She spends more screentime next to Taichi, Agumon, Jou and Gomamon than next to Mimi. I just find it interesting considering how Mimi was allowing herself to lose herself, it's like a symbolism of how disconnected she was becoming in this episode.
Also, this should have been the episode Lilimon made her debut. The novel knew it. Change my mind.
Evolution sequences screentime: 20,54 seconds for Agumon, 05,18 seconds for Palmon Total character screentime: 13:15,70 Full group screentime: 01:00,10 (sans Sora)

Episode 24: Crush! AtlurKabuterimon
Some pretty neat distribution of screentime between Koushiro and Tentomon. Even though Vadermon and PicoDevimon had a few scenes on their own, the heroes still surpassed seven minutes each, which also made Tentomon cross the hour mark on the overall card!
Once again, the group is still split and there wasn’t a lot of screentime of Koushiro, Tentomon, Yamato, Tsunomon, Takeru and Patamon near the end so I don’t count any “full group” screentime for this episode either.
Evolution sequences screentime: 26,24 seconds for Tentomon Total character screentime: 10:30,88 Full group screentime: None
Every time a new rule has to be set I’ll mention it on the relevant episode, then update the FAQ at some point I guess XD
Tumblr media
It may be only a photo shown, but we still see Koushiro and Tentomon on our screens, so the time of the photo being on screen counts for their times.
And once again, color-coded analysis:
Tumblr media
Dark Purple is solo Koushiro, which was 03:15 minutes combined. Mid Purple is Koushiro with Tentomon, which was 04:34 minutes combined. Light Purple is solo Tentomon, which was 02:34 minutes combined.
Orange is Taichi, blue is Yamato with Tsunomon, yellow is Takeru with Patamon.

Episode 23: You're my Friend! WereGarurumon
Yamato's first time at the top! Still Gabumon got way less screentime than I expected, but I guess since the focus here was the development between Yamato and Jou, the results make sense.
Tentomon and Palmon don't appear in this one, but it would have been a hassle to take them off the chart, so I simply kept them in. Koushiro and Mimi have a tiny appearance (though slightly longer than Piyomon's mere second) as still images while Yamato has his moment of reminding himself to believe in his friends. Small but countable, so I added them.
Once again, with the group separated, there were no shots of them all together in this one.
Evolution sequences screentime: 28,52 seconds for Gabumon, 6,50 for Gomamon Total character screentime: 14:23,20 Full group screentime: None

Episode 22: The Whispering Little Demon, PicoDevimon
Takeru and Patamon focus time! Piyomon and Tentomon have only slightly higher times than Sora and Koushiro respectively due to having a few more frames on group shots. Still, they all appear for a little in a flashback in the beginning, then it’s mostly Taichi, Agumon, Takeru and Patamon for this episode. With Taichi and Agumon missing from the flashbacks, there was not a single frame of all the characters together. I’m guessing this will be the trend until episode 26 where they all reunite.
Evolution sequences screentime: 04,96 seconds for Patamon. Total character screentime: 13:25,20 Full group screentime: None

Episode 21: Koromon's Great Battle in Tokyo!
In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t do this so late at night, but I knew I would be over with this episode very fast and I just wanted it out today too XD
Hikari’s intro! Time to spread out the overall card! When she becomes a regular I will start a second overall card that will show the screentimes of all characters only from the episodes she is in because I love making things harder for myself along with the already existing overall card.
Yamato, Mimi, Jou and Takeru actually have just a little less than a second of screentime in this one, and Sora 1,20 second, courtesy of a flashback from the first episode. I added those in the overall card in order to be as precise as possible, but I felt it was a very small time to add them to the episode card. Koushiro’s appearance via his cryptic video message to Taichi is also short, but long enough to warrant a place in the episode card.
Evolution sequences screentime: 04,44 seconds for Agumon. Total character screentime: 13:09,72 Full group screentime: 01:51,86 (as in, Taichi with Agumon and Hikari)
And since it was one of the “easy” episodes, I did the same colour-coded analysis I did in the episodes where the kids were separated:
Tumblr media
Right-click and open in a new tab to see more clearly:
Dark Orange is Taichi Light orange is Taichi with Agumon Yellow is Agumon Pink is Hikari Purple is Koushiro
And the small ones of various colours are from the flashback.
Whenever there’s a layer over another, it’s them being together on the screen. As you can see, most of Hikari’s screentime was her with either Taichi, Agumon (as Koromon) or both. My new way of counting does not allow me to specifically count the actual solo screentimes. It’s a little more easy to make mistakes but it’s honestly ten times as faster so I prefer that method.

Episode 20: Perfect Level Evolution! MetalGreymon
This is an interesting progression of the overall card. Agumon has been slowly gaining places, and his time will skyrocket in the next episode (I am finally reaching some easier to count episodes again! Hopefully I can chunk the screentimes faster for a while!). I wonder if he will be the one to end up in second place, after all. Tune in next week to find out!
Characters aside from Taichi and Agumon got significantly lower times in this one as again a lot of time was focused on Nanomon, Etemon, and a little on the latter’s minions. As I say in my FAQ, the Sora clone that Nanomon makes does not count for Sora’s screentime, since it’s not the real her.
Evolution sequences screentime: 27,10 seconds for Agumon (see what Perfect level evolution offers!), 6,17 for Piyomon and 5,92 for Tentomon. Total character screentime: 11:04,64 Full group screentime: 6,52 seconds

Episode 19: Nanomon of the Labyrinth!
Okay like absolutely no shade but this is one of the weirdest episodes I've analyzed by now, when it comes to screentime balance. Why do Yamato, Mimi and Takeru stay behind in this one? Taichi has a lot of solo screentime and most of it is him acting stupid because he thinks that being in data form means he cannot die. Koushiro is only second because of the big exposition parts. The Digimon have almost criminally little screentime.
Idk, as I said, no shade, I'm not here to criticize the writing. It just felt so weird in this one that I couldn’t help mentioning it, lol.
Evolution sequences screentime: 7 seconds each for Agumon, Piyomon, Tentomon and Gomamon. Total character screentime: 12:30,58 Full group screentime: 01:13,38

Episode 18: The Fairy! Piccolomon
One third of the episodes done! I’m so happy I’ve managed to keep up.
Taichi had his self-discovering journey with Agumon, and Yamato and Koushiro got their respective focus for their scenes of going off to find their crests. Still a quite balanced episode.
Koushiro and Takeru have crossed the hour mark! Tokomon was practically an extension of Takeru in this episode, by either sitting on his head or being held in his arms, so their screentimes are identical here.
There are some solo or duo episodes due in the Vamdemon arc, and Hikari starts appearing in the middle of it, so while the overall card has started developing more steadily, things will definitely shift soon.
About Hikari’s screentime: Since she doesn’t appear for more than half the episodes, her time will be far too low in the overall card. For that reason, when she becomes a regular I will start a second “overall” card that only counts the episodes Hikari is in (and yes, that includes episode 21) along with the original one that counts all episodes.
Evolution sequences screentime: 10 seconds for Agumon Total character screentime: 13:15,24 Full group screentime: 01:36,68

Analytical screentime of each character in the opening credits of Digimon Adventure, Butter-Fly. Time is shown in seconds and decimals.
I wanted to do this for some time but I always prioritized doing the episodes themselves. I guess it’s never too late, lol.
With my so far analysis of the episodes, it’s only Takeru’s place in fourth place (for the kids) that surprises me, and accordingly, Koushiro’s at the last place.
I don’t think it says something; Takeru got a little more because of his relevance to Patamon. Patamon is the Digimon with the least screentime in the opening, but near the end there’s focus on Takeru’s reaction to Angemon, so that adds to Takeru’s time more than Koushiro riding on Kabuterimon does for Koushiro’s time.
I might do the same for the closing credits, but at some other time.

Episode 17: The Illusionary Ship's Captain, Cockatrimon!
I think I found a much, much quicker way of counting the screentimes. It's a little more subject to mistakes, but unless someone else picks up this humongous project, I guess my results are still the given for this fandom!
Four more characters crossed the one hour mark. Taichi has fifteen more minutes than Jou who’s in second place, and he’s got the Tokyo episode to come all on his own, lmao. I hadn’t expected the difference would be that big already. Let’s see how it stands as the show progresses.
Since the beginning of the second arc I’ve noticed a small increase in Gabumon’s time in each episode. It’s still early in this arc but I find it kind of interesting. It’s mostly increase of his background time; in previous episode he was omitted from many group shots, but in these episodes you see a lot more of him in such shots.
And yes, the shots were some of the Digimon were petrified count.
Evolution sequences screentime: 4,36 seconds for Agumon, 14 for Piyomon, 10 for Palmon Total character screentime: 10:38,66 Full group screentime: 02:17,10

Episode 16: Dark Evolution! SkullGreymon
Spooky scary skeleton time
It goes without saying that the other Greymon that Taichi's Greymon fights doesn't count for the latter's screentime. SkullGreymon does though, since he is still the Agumon we know and love. Just a little corrupt.
Some tidbits: Jou is the second to cross the one hour mark! I think this is the first episode to have Taichi and Agumon so close, at only 3,4 seconds difference. They really did give a LOT of focus on SkullGreymon. Also noting how Yamato, Mimi and Takeru also have very little difference from their respective partners, with Palmon even surpassing Mimi for just a little less than a second. Though not because they were framed together all the time, with the exception of Takeru, who was holding Tokomon in his arms 99% of the time; it was only in one instance that he wasn’t holding him, and the little difference left was because we were only seeing Takeru’s back and Tokomon was hidden by him.
Evolution sequences screentime: 14 seconds for Agumon (his evolution to SkullGreymon isn't included here, as it's not shown with the typical evolution sequence, and it's instead counted towards Agumon's overall screentime), 09,86 for Gabumon, 14 for Piyomon, 14 for Tentomon Total character screentime: 12:43,16 Full group screentime: 01:20,60

Episode 15: Etemon! Grand Entrance of Evil
The characters’ screentime here is significantly reduced in comparison to the previous episode, since with Etemon’s introduction, there were full scenes that no main character appeared. Patamon (as Tokomon) interestingly had more time than Takeru, contributed by the scene where he gets kidnapped by the Pagumons and after when Agumon finds him.
Evolution sequences screentime: 14 seconds for Agumon, 04,20 seconds for Gabumon Total character screentime: 10:53,72 Full group screentime: 01:18,38
In general, I count it when a character's small part is on screen, like their leg, a hand, or the top of their hat. I do so because I feel that even if it's a small part, it's drawn on the frame as a way of showing that the character is "included" in the shot. In this following case I took an exception:
Tumblr media
On the bottom right corner, you can see Yamato's knee. The "camera" focuses on Agumon and Gabumon for a little here, then zooms out to show Taichi and Yamato sitting beside them. I thought it would be a stretch to add this to Yamato's time just for his knee, because a few seconds later it actually focuses on him as well, so I started his counting when more of him was shown.

Episode 14: Set Sail - To a New Continent!
And with that, Taichi crossed the one hour mark! If it took 14 episodes for that, logistically he could reach 4 hours by the final episode. Though there's still a lot until then ;)
With Patamon, in his Poyomon form, not appearing until the middle of the episode, and then being so small that in some of the frames he's not visible at all, his screentime naturally took a dip in this one. In general though, it's still a quite balanced episode. Gomamon also took a dip because he... took a dip in the ocean (ha) while the other characters were discussing whether they should go to Server Continent or not.
This episode was particularly hard - hence why it took me so long compared to others - because the scenes with the kids on the raft from afar were very difficult to differentiate. Usually, when I can count around 14 blobs from afar, I count them as "full group" (13 in this case since Poyomon was almost always held on Takeru's arms). But they were just about distinguishable on the raft, and some were hidden at times because of angles or whatnot, so I had to zoom in and look very carefully to distinguish which characters and their details were visible. And I'm still sure I made mistakes. Whatever!
Evolution sequences screentime: 07,54 for Tentomon, 14,06 for Gomamon. Total character screentime: 12:37,46 Full group screentime: 41,36 seconds (with Patamon as a Digiegg it would go to 01:15,78)

Episode 13: Angemon Awakens!
I WANNA TAKE HIM HOME WITH ME-
As I say in my FAQ, the screentime for Patamon pauses when Angemon dissolves. It will continue when Poyomon hatches from his Digiegg.
Lots of framing of Koushiro with Mimi in this one. Those two had almost zero solo screentime, and same with Jou - most of his was with Ikkakumon. And turns out that there are many more examples of Digimon getting more screentime than their respective human partner than I anticipated. Here, due to Sora and Jou not appearing until the middle of the episode, and with Piyomon and Gomamon getting focus on their fight against Devimon, the latter have more screentime than the humans. Takeru and Patamon were almost always framed together, until Patamon evolved and Angemon got his fair share of screentime to show his glory.
And with that, the first arc is concluded. It’s late now so tomorrow I will make an animated GIF showing the progress of the “overall” cards up to this point.
Evolution sequences screentime: 05,12 seconds for Agumon, 04,76 seconds for Gabumon, 05,12 seconds for Tentomon, 05,02 seconds for Palmon, and finally, 13,94 seconds for Patamon. Total character screentime: 11:59,90 Full group screentime: Technically none, but with Patamon as a Digiegg 31,16 seconds

Episode 12: Adventure! Patamon and I
Patamon and he indeed. The other characters had to be included in the card, even just for the two seconds that they appeared near the end. Yamato got a little more thanks to his appearance in Takeru's flashback.
A pretty solid sharing of screentime between Takeru and Patamon in this one. As you'll see below, most of it was of them both together on screen, though each one had his respective focus.
"Piyomon" had an appearance in this one when Patamon was imagining how it would be like if he could evolve and grow wings to fly high like she does. While she does appear on screen, it's not actually Piyomon, it's more like Patamon imagining himself as her. In any case, she appears for 02,60 seconds and has an evolution sequence of 10 seconds. I haven’t counted it on her screentime in this one, but I’m keeping the record in case I change my mind.
Evolution sequences screentime: None (unless you count Piyomon) Total character screentime: 12:04,64 Full group (or Takeru with Patamon together) screentime: 06:26,38
Takeru’s solo screentime is 02:42,80 Patamon’s solo screentime is 02:32,36
And one last colour-coded breakdown:
Tumblr media
Yellow is solo Takeru, bright orange above is solo Patamon, and deep orange is Takeru with Patamon together. As you can see that one covers most of the episode.
Bright blue is Takeru with Yamato, and deep blue is solo Yamato (from Takeru’s flashback). The soft blues near the end are the other six kids as they’re shown for two seconds on their way back to Infinity Mountain.
