Digidupe LIVES! A new home at Louder Than War
Today marks the publication of my first blog for popular music website Louder Than War.
Following the forced closure of my Digidupe blog, I was asked to write a regular column that focused on Digidub, which is an umbrella genre that I've come to use for modern reggae, dancehall and dub music.
For the first one, I write an introduction to the genre, and focus on Mungo's Hi-Fi - one of the most prominent of modern bass music proponents. There's lots of music to stream and words to read, so head over to the site to give it a read... http://louderthanwar.com/blogs/digidupe-blog/

So Digidupe is officially dead (thanks Tumblr). The good news is that the beats go on, and come to vinyl as well. I'm launching my own record label, the first release is some DOOM DUB badness from Holland's D.E.A.D. Check it over at gmsounds.com
GM Sounds is a record label, GMSounds.com is a blog. Both are one and the same. They’re run by me, Gareth Main, but before we get into that, here’s the story so far:
I founded Bearded Magazine, which was a lovingly put-together music magazine that was in real shops until 2010.
In July...

DJing Tonight (London, 6/7/12)
First up, you might have noticed the drag in posts. You're more likely to have noticed none of the streams work. I am working with Tumblr on this and have a solution. It's coming in the next few weeks, so sorry about that.
Most of these tracks come from Soundcloud. So check out my favourites stream for regular updates on tracks I'm digging at the moment.
Now that's done, I'm DJing three hours of Digidub tunes TONIGHT in London. It's to celebrate the brilliant new 12" from Deadfader (released on the excellent Robot Elephant label, you can buy it direct for just £8).
It's going to be a brilliant party. It's at Power Lunches in Dalston. All the info you need can be found on the Facebook event page.

Oh what a tease you are Solo! The great Solo Banton has treated those on Soundcloud with a demo sample track Done Dem. It's only two minutes long, but is sounding amazing. Produced by Cagliari-based Islasound and coming out (I think) on Cuba Records, this is one to look out for.

DJ set, London, tomorrow night (30/6/12)
If you're in London tomorrow night, you'll be silly to miss the late-night shenanigans in Dalston. It's the end of tour celebration for the very superb Sun Araw (who recently released a brilliant record with legendary reggae group The Congos - £16 at Norman). I'm DJing from 10-12 and I'll be playing amazing digidub tunes.
Feel free to say hello if you come along.

It's been a while since French producer WellWell appeared on the blog. Too long in fact, so it's a great pleasure to present his latest riddim.
Shank I Sheck is simple but smile-inducing. This version is yet to be dubbed, but I like the effect of the opening four minutes being light, before the bass properly kicks in. It may be a work in progress, but it's great as it is.

Some Brazilian flavour this morning via Brazilian artist Digitaldubs. Lyrics come via the late, great Sugar Minott. Complicated People is lifted from the upcoming release on Scotch Bonnet that is expected (hopefully on vinyl) at somepoint in July.
Get the last Digitaldubs record for £13 from Scotch Bonnet.

There's plenty of posts on this blog that take influence from legendary dub producers of the past. As such, I thought it would be nice to put a collection of tracks produced by King Tubby on the blog.
Enjoy!

It's been 7 years this week since Jamaican reggae singer Jennifer Lara passed away. As such, here's a great track of hers - Hand to Mouth - released on High Times back in 1983.
Here's a obituary, which appeared on the Jamaica Gleaner site.
JENNIFER LARA, one of the reggae scene's most prolific backing vocalists, has died. According to Norma Dodd, widow of Studio One's Clement Dodd and who knew Ms. Lara for over 30 years, she died recently at the Kingston Public Hospital from a stroke.
Ms. Lara, who was 52 years old, recorded for most of her career at the famed Studio One studio of producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, recording one album (Studio One Presents Jennifer Lara), which was released during the 1970s. Her first song, Consider Me, was also cut at Studio One during that period.
Mrs. Dodd says she recorded her last song, Ordinary People (a duet with singer/guitarist Dalton Browne), at Studio One two weeks ago. Recently, she toured as a backing vocalist with roots-reggae group The Ethiopians.
Musicologist Bunny Goodison described Ms. Lara as Studio One's "resident harmonist". He added: "She was a very likeable person, got on with everyone."
During her over 35 year association with the studio, Jennifer Lara added backing vocals to the songs of some of the camp's biggest names, including Delroy Wilson, Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott.
Ms. Lara, who is the cousin of Tamlins member Derrick Lara, was first taken to Studio One in 1969 by keyboardist Richard Ace, who was a session musician there.
She is survived by two children, daughter Ika and son Cheka
