No was the thought that first came to mind. She avoided Steve's warm concerned gaze, her eyes fixated on a blank wall. As much as she wanted to hold everything together, she was a hair's width away from losing it all.

"I just need some time." Her fingers dug into her sleeved arms, a sigh heaved its way from her chest. Max bit her lower lip, not wanting to spill out all the tears she was so close to releasing. "I just.." Her brow furrowed, her teeth gritted.

"It's so unfair!" And the flood gates opened and she found herself reaching for him, burying herself in his chest. She breathed in the scent of him, the smell of floral hair products and whatever cologne he was wearing, it was so comforting, it was so sweet and welcoming like the softness of his sweater that she was now dampening with her tears.

"Why did this have to happen? Why couldn't it have been me?" The last sentence slipped out in the midst of her emotions, a thought she had been holding onto for far too long.

"No, but you could try." A cheeky retort was given, her lips spread in a wide grin.

Her grin, however faded a bit. Did she worry over Mike? She supposed it made sense, Mike did seem to get himself in a lot of trouble, but so did the others, however they weren't her siblings, Mike was. So fair enough.

At first she didn't want Nancy to make such a fuss over her eating habits, but blueberry pancakes did sound enticing. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to indulge, it was free food after all.

"Blueberries sounds nice. Where do you keep your pancake mix?" Unlike the others, she wasn't at the Wheelers' often enough to know where they stored things.

‘Always the babysitter.’ Nancy could relate to that having taken Max into their household. A title Steve had bestowed upon himself, but one Nancy would rebrand for him as Dad, personally. The exasperated scolding, the hands on hips, the jokes, raking his hand through that nest of gorgeous hair — father, type through and through. Nancy did the same with Mike’s friends too, but she wouldn’t take on the role as Mom because… well given the history with Steve, and the fact that she wasn’t ready for that title that made her want to head for the hills, Nancy was more than comfortable accepting the Big Sister responsibilities. Especially for the girls who were a lot more tolerable than Mike.

“You think you had a granola bar.” Nancy huffed in amusement. “Sound a lot like me there. Jonathan’s always making sure I’m eating. Says I can’t just live off of caffeine alone.” The smile on her lips seemed to remain constantly hovering, knowing that whatever was going on with Max was by now expertly hidden away, relating to the redhead in not wanting anyone to worry about her and pushing away. “Yeah… can’t help it though. Kinda my thing — worrying.” She moved to the kitchen, opening the pantry cupboards to see what she could make. “Way past breakfast but… I make some mean pancakes. Got chocolate chips, or blueberries, or plain, if you want?” Whether or not Max spoke up about agreeing, Nancy had already planned on making some. “Wanna help?” If to take Max’s mind off things.
