lately I've been considering AUs where Max is in different families. So AU where she's living with the Harringtons (like maybe Susan and Steve's dad got together, or maybe she's a foster kid, etc.), or an AU where she's living with the Wheelers (she'd be such a big sister to Holly and Nancy would be an a+ sister to Max, and ofc the drama and complicated relationship with mike where they'd both annoy the hell out of each other but ultimately still care about each other).

An eerie silence fell on the old junkyard. It was dark out and she was certain Neil would give her the worst earful once she got home. Hell, he was probably taking it all out on Billy at this moment while she sat in darkness, feeling bored and confused.

Why she obliged to come here in the first place was a mystery to her. The way Lucas was so insistent on this demo-dog thing, this whole conspiracy with Hawkins lab and a girl with psychic abilities, it sounded so ludicrous. Yet his convictions made her feel maybe there was a slight truth to his outlandish story, even still she remained skeptical.

"We're just wasting our time." Was it out of loneliness that she stuck around them? It wasn't like she had friends here, having just moved to Hawkins. Her brother was an abrasive violent bully, as was her step-father.

Almost anything was better than being at home, even if it meant sitting in an old school bus in the middle of a junkyard full of old worn out vehicles, ready to be turned into scrap metal.

There came a noise, a weird animal call. Then a thud and the bus started to rock side to side. Max tried to maintain her balance and before she knew it, there was a moment of stillness.

Another thud. It came from the roof of the bus and she froze. The sound of loud chewing, the tearing apart of metal sounded in her ears and Steve pushed her cautiously out of the way. A creature with a mouth that split apart into sections, one full of teeth, came through the newly made hole in the ceiling and Max screamed.

"What the hell, what the hell is that, what the absolute fuck is that, oh my god."

Her heart thudded in her chest as she stood behind Steve, watching in horror as he defended her, Lucas, and Dustin from the creature with his nailed bat.

"Christ.." she hissed between her teeth as Steve followed the creature outside. She stared with wide horrified eyes as there was not one, but dozens more of these things and Steve was trying to fight them all by himself.

"We have to do something, there's too many of them and he's going to get himself killed!"

The Wheelers' house felt still, quiet even. Much unlike her own home which was often filled with noise, whether it was Billy's loud aggressive music or yelling, namely from Neil.

There was always so much bickering back at home that a quiet environment felt entirely foreign to her, but not exactly unwelcome. Still, much as she appreciated the quiet, it make her feel strange, even a tad on edge. As if she were waiting for something to explode but it never did.

So lost in her thoughts, she barely heard Nancy speak. "Oh, I think I had a granola bar earlier." She wasn't used to having people look out for her, having had to look out for herself. Her mother, as caring as she could be, was not typically in a position where she could help much. And as much as Max understood, it was still painful.

The limitations hurt them both, but sometimes Max felt Susan could do so much more, but wouldn't. Was it fear that held her back? She suspected so.

"Don't worry about me. I'll be fine."
