This is an issue we need to talk/think/debate/research more about. I’ve thought and argued about masculinity, feminism, family values and gender equality for the last several years with colleagues, and through it all I continue to hold many of the beliefs this author articulates: that gender will continue to promote social stratification until we start educating our children with similar methods and identical values. As a man who was raised alongside two sisters and a little brother, I often think about the ways our parents raised us differently, how they instructed my brother and I to take on roles our sisters did not, and vice versa. I wonder if our ultimate career goals and ambitions reflect the way we were raised, if my success is in part due to the fact that I was the oldest son in my family and extended more respect as a result. We need to decide what we want as a country: are we okay with our daughters falling to the wayside, taking less-reputed jobs, and being paid less than men for identical work? Would we accept rape and domestic abuse as a “boys will be boys” phenomenon, and if not, why do we say “boys will be boys” when they roughhouse girls on the playground? Is strength really a matter of pure body size and shape, and if so, how is it that so many female police officers take down grown men twice their size on the daily? These questions matter to our understanding of gender and social norms, and if we don’t start debunking myths that limit our boys just as much as they limit our girls, gender equality will continue to be an idealistic dream instead of a sustainable reality.

Child welfare is expensive enough without policies like HB24 getting in the way of child placement. The negative consequences of "protecting religious freedom" here include keeping children in child welfare longer, costing more money to the average Alabama taxpayer, and preventing highly qualified parents from giving hopeful kids a forever home. Ultimately, we all lose. Gov. Kay Ivey: shame on you. Every child who ages out of the Alabama system will have you to thank for this discriminatory, politically regressive law that does no good for them. Next time you want to engage in a social service system about which you clearly understand so very little, talk to a social worker.

Thank you for staying strong and inspiring all of us to pursue a more inclusive and welcoming world. We are here for you and see you. You are valid. Happy TDOV ❤️
Trans Day of Visibility
❤️if you can’t celebrate today because you’re not out, it’s okay. 💛if you can’t celebrate today because the people around you are not accepting of transgender people, it’s okay. 💚if you can’t celebrate today because you feel unsafe or at risk doing so, it’s okay. 💙if you can’t celebrate today because you feel as though you are not “trans enough” because of your appearance, voice, etc; it’s okay. 💜if you can’t celebrate today because your mental illness makes you feel like you’re unable to speak up about your trans experiences, it’s okay.
You are still valid and you are loved💖

Some tips for those of you who write about trans subjects. Remember, if you don't know how a person prefers to be identified, ask before assuming.

Happy TDOV! I’m Luke (he/him) and I hope you’re all having a great day filled with happiness and pride, although I know life’s not always as kind as I’d wish to most of us, we’re still here and we’re visible. Whether you decide to post a selfie today or not, I’ll always be proud of you, stay safe♡

#19 Welcome to the International Transgender day of Visibility (just a few hours early) guys, gals & non-binary pals! You’re a big deal, let your voice be heard & your face be seen! (or something like that) You guys are great, and I’m proud of each and every one of you for having the strength to be who you are - whatever that is, even if you’re the only one who knows it, or even if you don’t know what “it” is yet. No matter what, you’re beautiful people ❤️❤️ Stay tuned for a special TDOV comic at 9:00 AM (EST) & some pictures of my face later as well

Trans Day of Visibility!
My name is Kal (he/him). Two years ago I came out to all my family and friends. A lot has changed in those twenty-four months: a name, a voice, a smile — a perspective, among other things. I like to think who I am has not changed, but more how much of myself I share and how am with others. I’m the same as before, except I’m more honest.
I still carry sadness and find myself still dissatisfied with my form, my state of mind, my living situation. I suppose that means I have more growing to do.
Two years down, one lifetime ahead.
