Chenevert The Thespian

Michael Chenevert is a FANTASTIC Actor.  Versed in the worlds of both Theater, Film and Television, this cat knows how to deliver a live with emotion. He has performed at the world famous Apollo Theater and Nuyorican Poets Cafe.  Micheal is known most recently as the mastermind behind the One Man Show ‘AN ADAM EXPERIMENT’, on the life of Civil Rights figure Adam Clayton Powell. https://www.facebook.com/anadamexperiment/

LOVE & CYBERSECURITY in ST. LOUIS.

It was a wonderful time in St Louis, Missouri at the Black Speculative Arts Movement event at Harris-Stowe University.  During the festivities, I had the wonderful experience of Glogging three individuals.

Karl and Anne.  

This Couple has been married for somewhere around 20 years and have the most fascinating history.  Anne is an accomplished Mathematics Instructor and editor of scholarly academic texts.  Karl is a fantastic architect and one of the handful of Black Magicians in the world.  Karl's 1 buck to a Hundred trick was NUTS.  As fascinating as their personalities and careers are, the way they met is supremely entertaining.  I had the pleasure of illustrating them as they conveyed their meeting of minds.

Jamie.

Cyber Security expert.  In the travels to further Glog folks from all walks of life I encountered Jamie.  This gentlemen had the most…for lack of a better term…stabilizing...response and view of the present occupant of the White House.  After a bit of discussion about our careers the Elephant sized question in the room finally had to be asked to Jamie;  “Will we be Irradiated and Dead in 4 Years?”  His reply:  “We’ll still be alive”.

There are apparently checks and balances in place that can prevent any potential nuclear launches in the case of an errant nasty tweet.  

What a RELIEF:-)

NYTIMES: BLACK METROPOLIS & MATTY’S ROCKET

Greetings Dieselfunkateers!   Over the last 7 months an awesome amount of work was done by writer goddess Ruth La Ferla on the subject of Afrofuturism in The NEW YORK TIMES article titled

Covered within the article is my one man show, ‘BLACK METROPOLIS:  30 Years of Afrofuturism, Comics, Music, Animation,  Decapitated Chickens, Heroes, Villains, and, and Negroes.   and my retro-afrofuturism comic, Matty’s Rocket!

As I have been a participant of the form for over 30 years, it is indeed a moving emotion that comes to bear.  BLACK METROPOLIS, and MATTY’S ROCKET represents my particular take on the depiction of black culture within a technological and socially expansive based Past, Present, and FUTURE of WHO and WHAT WE ARE.  

Expect MORE NEWS to come over the coming days with a behind the scenes expose on Black Metropolis, Matty’s Rocket, Afrofuturism, Dieselfunk, Dieselfunk Studios, INFINITUM, The Dieselfunk Store, and The Black Speculative Arts Movement.

Happy Thanksgiving from The Dieselfunk Show. 

We spent our Thanksgiving hanging with family.  Inbetween gorging ourselves on a plethora of food,  portraits were done of our Parents.  When jetting around to get voices from all corners, one can forget to capture the stories of love right in the own home.  They were excellent subjects.

DIESELFUNK SHOW ELECTION RECAP

We finished shooting two episodes of Season Two of the Dieselfunk Show. Due to the weight of of matters, we wanted to chime in as to why yesterday’s events happened, not so much as to what tomorrow’s events will bring.  In our day long road trip, Jim and I had the privilege of interviewing and illustrating (glogging) multiple folks in every borough in New York City.  We can report that NYC, like the country, is just as diverse, informed, uninformed, female, engaged, male, apathetic, conservative, progressive, gay, straight, black, white, asian, immigrant, and native born, as it was the day before.  From Harlem, the Bronx, Queens, to Brooklyn and finally, Staten Island, we are NOT monolithic.  

We talked with an immigrant retired veteran who wanted something more for his kids, a non-political unregistered voter college student,  a female retiree with high hopes for the first female President, a retired contractor who was moving to the midwest in order to experience lower governmental influence, a concerned african-american who felt compelled to try to keep President Obama’s initiatives alive, and finally a former marketing executive who not only was a dutiful caretaker of her parents, but felt concerned with the direction Hillary Clinton could take the country.  Jim and I ended our trip with a high energy Times Square that progressively transformed into something akin to a wake.  We are thankful to have recorded these stories in all their passion.  

We heard it ALL.  Take it or Leave it.  Love it or Hate It.  It’s America.

GLOGGING AT THE WHITE HOUSE SOUTH BY SOUTH LAWN 

Imagine the excitement when the notice came inviting nominees to the first annual South By South Lawn event at the White House, hosted by President Barack Obama. Identical twins, Jim and Tim Fielder, picked from over 20,000 nominees, would have the amazing opportunity to showcase their work, called Glogging, in the center of the US Government alongside amazing artists, activists, and changemakers.

Firstly, what exactly is Glogging? Where Blogging is digital journalism with words, and Vlogging is digital journalism with video, then GLOGGING is digital journalism with graphics. Jim and Tim jointly interview (Jim films in 4k and Tim illustrates via tablet) subjects from all walks of life. Politics, Arts, Popular Culture, to Regular Folks. 

Here's the twist: at the time of the invite Glogging didn't exist 3 months earlier. This new form of journalism came about during a bus ride to Cleveland, Ohio. Joyce Brabner, Comic book legend (American Splendor) created a crack team of cartooning activists called 'COMIXCAST' that would cover the 2016 Republican National Convention in the form of editorial cartoons.  

Covered online by The Outhousers, Jim and Tim would go on to use the petri dish of the Republican national convention as a proving ground for Glogging. After one amazing night of interviewing people from all over the ideological spectrum and being covered ourselves by CNET and the NYTimes, it was obvious the concept had to turn into a TV show.  

As artists they created The Dieselfunk Show with episodes at the Democratic National Convention, Star Trek Missions 50th Anniversary Celebration (Nichelle Nichols will appear in that episode) and The Brooklyn West Indian Day Parade.  Tim stated; “It has been a joy sharing the stories of subjects while producing, at last count, over 60 digital portraits. “

By some miracle, They would now be able to produce episodes during SXSL. What an honor.

Tim:  “We were fortunate to be able to bring our family along.  After sorting out the logistics of managing relatives and equipment, we finally made it onto The South Lawn.  Work began immediately.  Depending upon the time, I often times will get quick gestures and tighten drawings later.  In other circumstances, I may leave images loose because I like the compositions. “ 

Jim: “What we noticed instantly were the clearly talented Attendees and Exhibitors. Our experience proved itself to be quite unique in that we were a hybrid of both Attendee and Exhibitor. While we were able to exhibit exactly what we do while filming our interviews for the DieselFunk Show, being mobile allowed us to experience the communal and networking component of a SXSL attendee.  We both understood the historical significance of SXSL. Consequently, the decision to record in full 4K video for both the season finale of our first season of TDFS and archival purposes was an easy call to make.”

The following portraits are just some of our subjects.

Our first subject was Jojo, a business owner who was looking to network with other organizations and share ideas.  

Kalan a Texas based professor, model, and entrepreneur exposed the power of the internet to grow small businesses.

US Chief Technology Officer, Megan Smith, shared her dream of a more robust technological learning environment in our schools.

Seij, a food activist detailed organization's initiative to promote food diversity and ergonomic ways to feed our growing population.

Climate change activist Damien spoke about spreading essential information amongst communities of color about the fragility of our environment.

Most amazingly, they were able to capture the WHITE HOUSE at close range.  In fact this may be the first time the building has been painted as a Plein Air illustration via digital tablet.   Wacom eat your heart out.

Finally, They had the opportunity to engage The President of the United States in Glogging.  The keynote event featured Leonardo DiCaprio interviewing Scientist Katherine Hayhoe, and the President on the subject of Climate Change and how our national and international communities can make change for future generations.  Tim emphasized, “ I made sure to get two portraits of the President over the course of the discussion”.  Jim agreed, “ It was Glogging at its finest.”

As African-American males, Jim and Tim both recognize the significance of being able to utilize this new journalistic form created during the tenure of the First Black President in US History.  Every Glogging session we capture ends with a quote from our subject depicted in a customary word balloon.  As the President headed back after the keynote, he shouted with passion; “VOTE!”.

The Twins ended with, “We are proud to have assisted in expanding the stories of all of our blogging subjects and feel inspired to continue our work.  Expect Season One of The Dieselfunk Show to be available for viewing soon online and streaming. DIESELFUNK @ SOUTH BY SOUTH LAWN #SXSL  

Greetings Dieselfunkateers!  Well I guess the Cat is Out the BAG.  The Dieselfunk Crew will be taking the DIESELFUNK SHOW  to the FIRST Annual SOUTH BY SOUTH LAWN at the WHITEHOUSE.  Jim and I look forward to doing our GLOGGING THING.  We are so thankful to have been nominated and selected for such an honor.
