MTLK: White Lions

((Same rules as before: Put spoiler warnings on the very top of your comments before commenting spoilers. The film is still very new this time around and I , myself, have not seen it yet, I'll see it as soon as I can, though. Once I do, there will be more fanart based on knowledge I have of the movie after seeing it. This drawing is a byproduct of the things I already knew.))

As a (slightly late) celebration of the long-awaited release of the Mufasa movie today, I made 2D-verse designs of the main members of Kiros' pride we were introduced to via this clip.

Design process below:

I felt that Kiros needed an update to his design from the last time I drew him. I felt I was following the features of his photorealistic counterpart too much and came up with a way too detailed lion who didn't quite fit the 2D-verse. I still went for that ice-themed shape language for his design, such as sharp points and slight hexagon shapes. I referenced Mads Mikkelsen's features just as the creators of Kiros' design said they have done, themselves. I can tell they went for that same technique that Andreas Deja once used when applying Jeremy Iron's features and expressions to 2D Scar.

As you can probably see, Amara and Akua instantly reminded me of Zira and Vitani, respectively. As soon as I saw the preview featuring them, I instantly got the vibes of already-existing lionesses based on their designs and personalities. They also gave me, like, Tarantino villainess vibes a little. Something about these femme fatale assassins working for the greedy and conniving big bad guy made me think of something out of Kill Bill.

I'm still uncertain which one lioness is Amara and which is Akua, or whether these are even their names or not at all. I heard these are Kiros' sisters? I definitely see it in Akua, she looks like she could be his identical twin.

MTLK: The Parents

We recently got some full design reveals for both Scar's and Mufasa's biological parents for the upcoming Mufasa movie. If you know me, I love a good character design opportunity.

((Disclaimer: This is merely a design challenge and not an attempt to blend the two TLK universes together. As far as I know, the CGI movies are meant to tell a different story from the original 2D animated works. It's presumed that in the 2D movies, Mufasa and Scar are biological brothers from a more traditional, established bloodline of royal lions, while the CGI movies tell the story of a new pride from Mufasa's generation being formed at what is now known as the Pridelands.

ALSO IMPORTANT: I understand some may have gotten special viewings of the movie, heard the entire soundtrack, and may have read the novelization if that came out at all yet, but please be courteous and don't comment any spoilers of the film, not without a warning on top of your comment.))

Design Process Below:

Masego: I took the first noticeable traits that jumped out at me and exaggerated them to fit the original 2D style. He kinda looked like a mix of Mufasa and Simba to me. The bright red patterns on his mane are based on the distinctive gray patches in Keith David's hair (I can't believe Keith David never occurred to me as a voice for a lion who would father Mufasa, that casting goes so hard ngl)

Afia: When I first saw Afia, I noticed how much she looks like her grandson, Simba. I decided to have her greatly resemble Simba's 2D counterpart as a nod to that. I modeled her eye shape after Tiana's eyes as an allusion to her voice actress, Anika Noni Rose.

Obasi: First thing I noticed about Obasi was how much he resembled the classic Yellow Ahadi model, so I mostly followed that. I struggled so much with his color scheme. I have alternate color schemes below the description.

Eshe: Eshe is very clearly where Scar got his slender face shape from in the CGI-verse. She also has a very obvious brown pelt that could easily be adapted into the 2D style. She was the most difficult for me to design as she already had a kinda cartoony appearance in her original CGI depiction, so I had trouble doing it justice.

It's just so funny that Scar's parents ended up looking like that common Yellow Ahadi model and Brown Uru models, while Mufasa's bio parents ended up looking like the less common Brown Ahadi and Yellow Uru models, lol.

VG Bonus Art: Friendly Fire

Synopsis: Vitani is overwhelmed from trying to wrangle her disputing Lion Guard and tending the needs of on-edge Pridelanders terrorized by foes. On top of that, Vitani and Nuka's spirits have been fused for far too long until the possession becomes a parasitic inconvenience. The Fiercest, highly stressed and agitated, has been fueling her newly-found Fire Roar to the point where she can't control it, and neither can Nuka. At some point, the fire evolves into destructive, molten lava -- a new power she'd discovered on her own. Will her Lion Guard find a way to extract Nuka's spirit and cool her tumultuous temper?

It's, well... pretty past Halloween, now, but it is a special day nonetheless, it's the 5th Anniversary of when Vitani and her pals officially became the new Lion Guard (Return to the Pride Lands was aired on TV on November 3rd, September 2nd was their DisneyNOW/WatchTLG release). So I guess I'm celebrating the anniversary of them becoming a team by... tearing them apart...?

I have no idea if this would be an AU or if I can actually manage to fit this into the Vitani's Guard storyline somehow. Come to think of it, it kinda makes me imagine if Nuka's spirit would've remained within Vitani the first time they ever fused, like if a prolonged possession lasted several episodes/chapters (I wanna say the duration of Shouting Match to Speed Run?) until it became too much for both of them, disaster ensues in a manner typical of tropey werewolf episodes of cartoons, or at worst, an Akira type of disaster in which aggravated emotions and emotionally-charged supernatural powers fight each other to make for some gruesome body horror visuals (in this case, becoming a living volcano).

The lava dripping from Vitani's mouth lowkey reminds me of rabies, maybe this constitutes as an Infection AU like what everyone's been doing lately? lol

The title is a pun on the term "friendly fire" meaning to kill or harm a soldier who's on your side (Shabaha here seems to have been on the receiving end of that). I became aware of the term after the release of a Linkin Park song of the same name.

I even don't know, how to react at this. Many years ago I assumed that Zira could just kidnap Kovu from different pride, brainwash him and raise as a killer and a puppet for her goal to rule Pridelands. And then we have this production note...

Well, I'll watch on this, maybe my other assumptions will be confirmed by these details from early drafts, but now I even more confident that Zira is just a power-hungry manipulator from other lands, who lied to all about her "friendship" with Scar and that he allegedly chose one of her cubs to be the next king after him.
