                   even if the streaks weren’t obvious upon her cheeks, carter knew eddie would have been able to tell something was wrong. they knew each other too well, bonded in ways no one should have to. nothing about what she was doing was unnatural for carter. using her two free periods to come out to the woods, sit at a shitty and shabby picnic table to read the latest novel she had picked up from the school library was something she did very often. and those few who found her out here, in her happy place, found her as just that — happy. she smiled and laughed and read her book with a bright curiosity. today, carter just... couldn’t bring herself to fake it.

‘ i didn’t think anyone could get tired of hearing about how many wooden teeth george washington had, ’ she quips, trying to join in on the lighheartedness eddie always seemed to bring to the table. for a moment, carter lowers her head, blonde hair curtaining her features, the girl only looking back up when she takes a deep breath. ‘ not really. i’m trying to be okay, but today, trying just — isn’t good enough, ’ bottom lip quivers, tears well in her eyes once more, but carter pushes them back. ‘ and what’re you doing out here? you didn’t come looking for little old me, did you? ’

                    tears were rarely seen falling from her eyes. carter doesn’t allow others to see her break down. she has created a perfect illusion, a different version of herself that was to be adored and respected by everyone around her. but that wasn’t who she really was, and all of the stuff underneath had to come to the surface eventually. carter is seated at the abandoned picnic table, wiping away tears before they could fall onto the novel she was reading, though they never ceased completely. she’s forced to sharply inhale, sit up straighter when she hears footsteps. light smile is instinctively forced upon her lips — everything’s alright, she can show them she’s fine. when carter realized it’s eddie, her expression falls again, relieved she didn’t have to pretend to be okay this time.

‘ jesus, e, you scared the shit out’ve me, ’ carter sniffles, slowly placing the bookmark between the pages and closing the novel with a sigh. red rimmed eyes move up to him. there’s no hiding that she’s been crying, not from someone who’s known her since she was young ; since she lost her parents. ‘ shouldn’t you be in class? ’ it’s a light hearted joke.     @coffinfire​.
