unpopular opinion: game grumps started to suck when they "went corporate”

at some point something changed, game grumps became not just a silly web show, but a web show with a fucking suite of business and production behind it, some time after they left polaris (likely having to take up the business themselves)

i mean this it isn’t just a letsplay channel any more. its a launching platform for every member’s other projects (ads for NSP, gameoverse, etc). arin’s said to have taken up a lot of the business and managerial aspects. the channel has live shows. it has a lawyer on-call at all times, and an intern (jack), and it literally has a producer, vernon.

does anyone remember when let’s plays were forum based, tiny, hobbyist projects hosted on somethingawful? does anyone realize the fucking oddity behind the at-home nature of let’s plays, mixed with the corporate nature of everything else?

the thing is, wanting to make a funny show with a lot of production value isn’t bad....but they have never actually committed to being funny or using their production value. they hide behind the excuse that “oh it’s just a let’s play channel, we dont need to put any production into it because it’s just a daily thing we do for fun. if you’re demanding anything more you’re acting entitled, it’s free online video”

it masquerades as a side project when clearly it’s not. it’s a job in 14-hour shifts. it pays their bills.

if you’re doing let’s play as a fun hobby then there is leeway for lack of production value or quality. but even then, not really that much, because if you aren’t consistently entertaining then people will stop watching.

but once you’re doing this as a job--once you have the financial and business resources to improve your product, and once you have the production values available...not using your available resources is a damn-near insult

imagine a tv show that was like this, it had a crew and cast and producers and multimillion dollar budgets, but it was only funny once every 10 episodes, and aggressively mediocre all the other times. would you still watch it? would the network still allow it to air?

game grumps has a producer and multiple editors. yet they continue to release (largely) unedited stream-like commentary, chopped up into 10 minute blocks because of an archaic rule regarding youtube money, with no guarantee of actually being funny or entertaining, no motivation other than “we have to talk and put in a bare minimum amount of effort and hope that, every once in a while, there is a nugget of humor that keeps people coming back”. they’re making a show with high production value that deliberately tries to lower its audience’s expectations, all while reaping a profit from putting in a minimal amount of effort

alternatively it could just be that i stopped finding game grumps funny because i grew up and got tired of dick jokes and silly voices (arin)

now the thing is that this critique is purely against the show as a show, because everyone on the show is a great person, and i really do think that arin and danny’s encouragement towards young artists is one of the best parts of it...

i dunno, the rest of it just isn’t doing anything for me any more
