The Truth About Why I Love The Marvel Studios Films.
A.k.a. The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
The short answer? They remind me of my son... and the continuing adventures of being a father. I always loved films, and when I was a kid, there was only Star Wars. Make no mistake, I loved movies as a whole, and love many genres, but the original Star Wars trilogy will always hold a very special place in my heart. These films are ultimately memories with my family. To those who don't know, Star Wars is not science fiction, but rather fantasy, that has space as it's setting and background. It is a beautiful family drama that concludes in the most heartfelt and epic way. Again, I'm speaking strictly about the original trilogy. Those films symbolize what I consider to be the first part of my life. The years that I was not a father. For the most part I'm still myself, but becoming a father was the defining moment where my life turned directions forever. In a great way. Almost 12 years into being a father, I have the retrospective and understanding of what has to come next. My love for the arts is only echoed in the old expression, "Life is art, Art is life", and this series is eerily symbolic of the second part of my life. My son was 11 months old when the first Iron Man movie was released, and will be 11 years old when, presumably, the final film to feature Iron Man is released. (Yes, I'm referring to AVENGERS: ENDGAME.) I've been through many ups and downs since becoming a parent, but a definitive constant was always taking my son to see these films. No matter what. He was growing up with these films, and is still growing up, at light speed. And now that these films are about to conclude, it coincides perfectly with where I'm at as a person, and most importantly, a parent. Before AVENGERS: ENDGAME is released, I made an online order for matching Avengers hoodies. After they arrived, I wanted a picture, of course, and immediately afterward, the cold, hard truth hit me; he's growing up and growing out of these movies. At least for now, and as we all do around that age. Why would he want to be wearing a matching outfit with his silly, goofy Dad? I wouldn't at his age. The truth is that I'm having more fun than him, at the moment, so thank goodness it's about to wrap up. (I realize they're continuing the films, but it will be under a new storyline arc, and mostly without our original characters.) We will enjoy ENDGAME when seeing it this week, but after that, it's time to move on. The movies will stay on my shelf, and I have memories that are immeasurable, and truly hope he does too, but overall, the moral of the story is that life goes on. My son isn't an adult yet, arguably as if I was, however he is entering a very different and crucial part of adolescence. I need to absorb and accept that despite the fact that I've been trying to keep my sweet little boy, as just that. Don't get me wrong, I'm still his parent and not his friend. However as parents, we do need to try our very best to keep track of every little step of their growing process, and address it accordingly. So having said that, my son doesn't have to wear that (very expensive) Avengers hoodie to the movie this week, though you better believe I'm wearing mine. But one last chapter, and like it or not, I have to let him grow up. Fortunately, I currently have a 5 year old daughter, who is adamant on being Captain America for Halloween this year. How could I argue with that? Life goes on, indeed.
