Water faucets is part of an individual’s daily life. A day will never be complete without having to use it, even if one is not bound to clean or cook in the house. And as a frequently-used plumbing fixture, manufacturers and plumbing design experts have found more and more ways to modernize this piece of plumbing equipment.
Modern home website Homecrux.com has shared a list of smart faucets that will definitely be a great addition to any home. One of the faucet systems that it featured is the iHouse Smart Faucet. Plumbing Association of San Diego
“It has a digital display which lets the user control water temperature and/or the water flow. As an added advantage, LED light indicates the exact temperature of the water coming out of the tap. Its unique feature is the facial recognition system which recognizes the person using the faucet, and depending on the pre-fed settings, the water is released. Also, the internet connected feature allows it to display emails and smart notifications like weather, calendar updates or reminders from your smartphone.”
Check out the rest of their recommendations here.
Why Smart Faucet
The website Make Use Of meanwhile came up with three reasons to install a Smart Faucet in a home. In its article, one of the reasons it mentioned is increased efficiency in dispensing water. A/C And HVAC

“Money is a big concern when it comes to appliances and home improvement, which is one reason why smart home products are so great: they save you energy and money whether we’re talking about thermostats, power plugs, or lighting solutions – and faucets now join that list. For example, smart faucets that are marked WaterSense use 20% less water than traditional faucets right out of the box. Couple that with finer controls for temperature and pressure and you’ll conserve more water while wasting less.”

If you don’t take some action to remove the roots, a complete sewer line block will occur. Plumber’s Guide on dealing with slow-draining toilets
Toilets drain issues
Dealing with a slow draining toilet can be frustrating. (Photo Credits)
Toilet drain problems can be embarrassing for both a host and a visitor. It can even be nerve-wracking especially if it appears to be clogged, or worse, overflows. So are there easy ways to deal with such a problem, or does one really have to get his hands literally dirty?
Home Repair Geek explains how the drains become suddenly slow, and why this happens.
“When the bowl empties, that means the water has all siphoned out after the initial gush, which is provided by the flood from the tank after you lower the lever. If your toilet is flushing slow, then you may have a problem with the flood waters. Something may be causing the water needed to flood the bowl properly to not do so adequately or in a timely manner.”
The full explanation can be found here.
Slow and clogged toilet
Homeguides SF Gate has shared several ways on how to deal with a slow flushing toilet. According to its online post, the first thing a homeowner should try is to use a plunger to help unclog the slow drain. Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: Plumber’s take on Devices that help Lower Water Bill )
“Plunge the toilet using a plunger that fits inside the waste opening. Plunging is easy, and if the sluggish flushing is caused by a partial waste blockage, using a plunger will probably remove it. If the toilet exhibits other signs of a blockage, such as backing up, clear the blockage with a toilet auger if plunging doesn’t work.”

HVAC, indoor air and Pets
Ensuring good indoor air quality
Can there be good indoor air quality with pets at home? (Photo Credits)
Indoor air quality may suffer due to having pets around the home. While HVAC systems may try hard to ensure a comfortable temperature inside the house, a pet’s dander, as well as everything that it excretes can become an allergen affecting the indoor air quality inside a home.
Medium.com explained this in one of their write-ups saying that managing it can be a key to ensuring good air quality at home.  Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: HVAC Technician’s guide on right air condition sizing)
“Pet dander impacts to air quality because of how small it is. As the dander is extremely light, it can stay in the air for an extremely long amount of time. In fact, pet dander is more likely to stick around in the air longer than dust mites! Beyond that, the flakes of skin from your pet are jagged around the edges, making them perfect for getting stuck on fabric all over your house. These two characteristics allow it to have spread easily, having the biggest impact possible on your health.”

The Allergy and Asthmas Foundation of America has mentioned several ways to ensure a better indoor air quality at home. In their informational post they mentioned that air conditioning also plays a huge part on reducing it since it reduces humidity inside a home. A/C and HVAC
(Related Post: Devices that help lower HVAC Operating Costs)
“Reducing humidity decreases dust mites and mold growth. Air conditioners help reduce humidity too. They can also prevent outdoor allergens. Keep your windows and doors closed. Turn your air conditioner on recirculate. These steps can help reduce outdoor allergens like pollen and mold.”

“For homes with sensitive individuals, the best way to protect indoor air quality is to remove the animal from the home. However, pet allergens may stay in the home for months after the pet is gone because the allergens remain in house dust. Allergy and asthma symptoms may take weeks or even months to improve. If the pet stays in the home, keep it out of the bedroom of anyone who has asthma or allergies. Do not allow the pet on furniture, especially upholstery, and keep the pet away from carpets. Clean the home often.”

Plumber tips on winterizing plumbing systems
Preparing for Winter
How to avoid frozen pipes. (Photo Credits)
Winterizing a home plumbing system is an important home maintenance procedure to undertake before the snow season sets in. It basically prevents frozen pipes that could eventually leak, burst, and could even lead to home water damage.
This is especially true for vacation homes, and when leaving the home for the holidays.
(Related Post: How to spot plumbing problems in the Garden)
Home improvement website BobVila.com has explained the importance of winterizing the plumbing system. A/C And HVAC
“When water freezes, it expands. So if the temperature of your pipes drops below 32 degrees, even for a short period, you run the risk of a pipe fracture or worse. Take the following precautions now to avoid a major headache later. Inside Your Home — anywhere cold air blows on a pipe, it creates the potential for freezing.”
The continuation can be found here.
How to winterize
Personal finance website The Balance mentioned the steps to take to winterize a home plumbing system. They also came up with a comprehensive guide for the procedure. Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: Plumber’s Advice on Bath Tub Troubles)
“Begin with a plan for winterizing your plumbing. It is easy to miss a step, so you make yourself a checklist of all parts of the house with the steps detailed below, including all taps and valves. Mark them off as you complete them, so you’ll know you did everything—and won’t have any nasty surprises come cold weather. “

HVAC Technician’s guide on right air condition sizing
Proper A/C Sizing
Having the right size of air conditioner fitted into a room spells a lot of difference when it comes to cooling comfort and electricity bills. Experts advice that every home should have a properly sized air conditioning unit so that they could take full advantage of their a/c unit and operational costs.
The US Department of Energy’s Energy Star explained why it is important to get the right sizing of air conditioning to the room where it is being used. Plumbing Association of San Diego
“A unit that is too big will be less effective and offer reduced air conditioner efficiency. Air conditioners remove both heat and humidity from the air. If the unit is too large, it will cool the room, before it has a chance to remove the humidity. The result will be a room that’s not very comfortable to spend time in That cool moist air will make the room feel damp and clammy. The most energy efficient air conditioner is sized to the square footage of the space to be cooled.”
Check out the Energy Star’s information table here.
Precise calculation
Homeguides SF Gate meantime explained that there may not be a hard and fast rule when it comes to determining the appropriate capacity of air conditioning unit for a certain room. They explain there is a lot of factors in play such as location of the home, the usual climate, among others. A/C And HVAC
“To obtain a precise calculation, you must consider your home’s unique factors: What region is it in? How good is the insulation? What direction does the house face? Some websites use online calculators to enable you to perform a closer estimate. An HVAC professional can use the Manual J – an engineering guide that precisely pinpoints the size you need.”
Take a look at the rest of the explanation here.

Consumer Reports meanwhile shared a rule of thumb approach that some use air conditioning professionals in right-sizing their air conditioning unit. The number though would have to be adjusted in view of factors like the orientation of the sun vis-à-vis the room, the number of occupants in a room, and the type of room where the air conditioning unit will be used.
“Window air conditioners typically have a cooling capacity ranging from 5,000 to 12,500 British thermal units (Btu/hr.). As a rule of thumb, an air conditioner needs 20 Btu for each square foot of living space. But don’t buy by Btu alone. Other considerations, such as the ceiling height and the size of your windows and doorways, might call for more cooling power. To measure your room, multiply the length of the room by the width. Add together the size of rooms that aren’t separated by doors because the air conditioner will need to cool both spaces.”
Check out the rest of the guidelines shared here.
To be sure about the right size of an air conditioning unit, it is best to consult an HVAC Professional.

Plumber’s Advice on Slow Drains
Slow and Steady
When the draining gets slow. (Photo Credits)
Slow drains can be frustrating and at the same time could signify that something is amiss in the sink’s plumbing system. Fortunately there are ways to remedy this type of issue before calling in the big guy AKA The Plumber.
(Related Post: Plumber’s advice on improving garden drainage)
Home improvement website BobVila.com mentioned several reasons for a slow draining sink, and was also quick to mention to not use abrasive and over the counter drains which can further damage plumbing systems especially the older ones. A/C And HVAC
“If you’ve got really old plumbing, harsh drain chemicals can cause damage. Try a naturally biodegrading drain cleaner or this homemade remedy: Pour in a half cup of baking soda, then a whole cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain for five minutes and flush it with a gallon of boiling water.”
Read more here.
Get the hair out
For bathroom sinks, The Family Handyman mentioned that usually it is hair and soap scum that causes the slowing of drains. It then shared the possible ways to get the blockage out. Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: Plumber’s thoughts on Drain Snakes)
“To learn how to unclog a bathroom sink, try lifting out the stopper (Photo 1). Sometimes it’ll come right out. If it doesn’t lift out, it’s held in by the pivot rod. Release the stopper by removing the pivot rod nut and pulling out the pivot rod (Photo 3). If you can’t loosen the nut by hand, use pliers. With the pivot rod pulled out, you’ll be able to lift out the stopper. Then to get the clog out, bend a wire in a tight hook (a light-duty clothes hanger or short length of electrical wire will do) and fish out the hair (Photo 2). “
Check out the rest of the procedure here.

Apartment Therapy also came up with a step-by-step guide in solving a slow-drain problem. In their Do-It-Yourself suggestion they just used pantry staples to unclog the slow drain.
“Set a full tea kettle on the stove to boil. Dry your sink out with a rag. Now, measure a 1/2 cup baking soda and dump it down your drain. In most sinks, the sink stopper will be in the way. We used a Q-tip to push the majority of the baking soda down the drain. Don’t worry if you can’t get it all down, the next step will do the rest of the work for you.”
The succeeding steps can be found here.
If slow drains persist, call in a plumber for assistance.

How to spot plumbing problems in the Garden
Lawn and Yard Plumbing Issues
What to do when plumbing issues occur in the garden? (Photo Credits)
The garden is another spot in the house that regularly uses up huge amounts of water. From the water sprinkler, to garden hoses, outdoor faucets, and even mini fountains or ponds, all these plumbing fixtures use water on a day-to-day basis.
Unfortunately, like any other plumbing fixture, garden faucets, hoses, and water sources are also subject to wear and tear. There is also the possibility of bad installation that may cause an even bigger trouble in this area of the home.
One common lawn problem is a wet and soggy surface. Home improvement website The Spruce discussed this issue in one of their posts on lawn problems, saying this can be attributed to a drainage trouble. Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: Plumber’s advice on installing shut-off valves)
“A soggy, wet lawn will attract all sorts of problems from weed outbreaks to lawn disease and eventually thin and dying turf. Installing subsurface drainage is the best way to alleviate drainage issues but it must be installed correctly to work properly. There are a variety of methods and materials that can be used for a drainage project depending on the amount of money, time, and labor at one’s disposal.”
Take a look at the rest of the explanation here.
Drainage issues explained
Home gardening website TheSensibleGardener.com shed light on why drainage problems usually plague lawns. In their web feature they mentioned that soil permeability as well as topography plays a huge role on lawn drainage. A/C And HVAC
(Related Post: Plumber’s thoughts on Drain Snakes)
“Drainage is never instantaneous. In other words, rain water is never completely absorbed immediately by the soil. On lawns especially, roots can create a thick barrier that can greatly reduce soil permeability. Soil compaction may also be an issue.” Check out the full web article here.

Another outdoor plumbing issue that may hound homes are frozen pipes. The best thing to do is to detach the garden hose even before the winter season sets in to avoid freezing the water that runs through the hose, the pipes, and the outdoor faucet. Frozen pipes that will end up bursting can be a problematic and expensive plumbing issue.

How to lower water consumption in the kitchen
Efficient use of water
Efficient use of water can help lower water bills. (Photo Credits)
The kitchen is one part of the home that consumes a huge chunk of a house’s water consumption. Efficient use of water in this area will help a lot in trimming down utility expenses. A little tweak in the household’s usual consumption habits can apparently go a long way.
Eco-friendly home improvement website Green Home Guide emphasizes that a lower water consumption leads to a low impact lifestyle. In one of their web posts, they shared ways on how households can improve the efficiency rate of their water consumption. Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: Plumber’s tips on water seeping from bathroom floor)_
“Tune up your kitchen sink faucet. If your sink faucet is leaking, make sure to fix it right away. According to the EPA, more than 3,000 gallons per year of water can be lost from a leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second. Also, consider installing a faucet aerator, which is fairly inexpensive and helps limit the amount of water used by mixing it with air.”
Check the rest of the tips here.
Low water use = low impact lifestyle
The website Water Footprint Calculator also came up with a comprehensive guide on how to save water consumption in the kitchen. In their webpage, they discussed various uses of water in the kitchen and how homeowners can save water in all these tasks. A/C And HVAC
(Related Post: What to do when a pipe bursts)
“Install a low-flow faucet on your sink. Conventional faucets flow at around 5 gallons per minute, while low-flow faucets flow at 1.5 gallons per minute. Wash vegetables and fruits in a large bowl or tub of water and scrub them with a vegetable brush instead of using your faucet as a power-washer. Don’t use water to defrost frozen foods. Instead, leave them in the fridge overnight.”

The website Health24.com also shared more tips in reducing water usage in the kitchen. One of the areas discussed is in dish washing.
“Less is more — Don’t use too much dish-washing liquid when washing dishes by hand because the more soap you use, the more water you will need for rinsing. Stop-start — Use short bursts of water rather than allowing the water to run freely while washing or rinsing items. Depending on the number of items, it might be better to put water into the kitchen sink. In the bin — Avoid pre-rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Scrape leftover food debris into the trash.”

Plumber’s advice on installing a toilet bidet
Bidet 101
The bidet culture is slowly growing in the United States. (Photo Credits)
In some cultures, having a bidet in the bathroom is a necessity. It is as important as any bathroom fixture, as it is essential in their everyday life.
Greenmatters.com explained why this is so, as it discussed the history of the bidet. In the same article they also discussed the many benefits of having one in the toilet. Apart from it is a healthier alternative because it ensures cleanliness compared to toilet paper use, it is also better for the environment. Plumbing Association of San Diego
(Related Post: Plumber’s advice on improving garden drainage)
“To support the amount of toilet paper Americans use, we’d need to cut down around 15 million trees a year to cover our butts with 36.5 billion rolls of toilet paper. It takes 473,587,500,000 gallons of water, 253,000 tons of chlorine, and 17.3 terawatts of electricity every year to create the 36.5 million rolls of toilet paper needed by Americans, according to MetaEfficient editor Justin Thomas in an interview with Scientific American. Added up over a lifetime, your toilet paper use equates to 384 trees.”
Check out the rest of the advantages of using bidet here.
Types of Bidet
Apartment Therapy came up with a feature post on the different types of bidet, and discussed the pros and cons of each type. One of the bidets they reviewed is the Luxe Bidet. A/C And HVAC
(Related Post: Plumber’s advice on installing shut-off valves)
“The Luxe Bidet was a relative breeze to install, taking about 10 minutes to put together, as advertised. The installation package even came with its own plastic wrenches for tightening, although they didn’t seem to quite fit the nuts they were made for, and I just used my own wrench for tightening.”

Plumber’s tips on remodelling a bathroom on a budget
Bathroom Goals
Remodeling the bathroom at a tight budget can still be possible with a few tips from expert, licensed plumbers. (Photo Credits)
Bathroom remodeling can be an expensive home improvement project, but it comes with a lot of returns. Apart from helping a homeowner achieve his or her bathroom goals and feeling good generally every day to see a wonderful space, bathroom renovations also ups the value of the property. Plumbing Association of San Diego
Home Improvement website Bobvila.com discussed this in one of his blog posts on the advantages of renovating a bathroom.
(Related Post: Plumber’s thoughts on Drain Snakes)
“Remodeling requires an investment of thought, time, and, crucially, money on the part of the homeowner. Here, “the key word is ‘investment,’ ” Maykut says. Not every upgrade comes with a favorable return, but bathroom remodeling delivers one of the best. Upon resale, homeowners typically recoup more than half the total cost of a bathroom renovation. The only catch is that for a remodel to be an asset, the workmanship must be high quality. For all but the most ambitious and capable do-it-yourselfers, that means hiring pros you trust to handle the job.”

Forbes.com meanwhile came up with sound advice on what to consider before finally deciding on remodeling the bathroom. One of the key points discussed in their write-up is the impact of the remodeling project on the home’s plumbing system.
“Residential plumbing typically uses 1½-inch pipes for drains. You’d be surprised how much gunk and hair goes down that drain. The larger the drain, the less likely it is to clog. The cost difference to upgrade to a 2-inch drain is practically negligible, and unless your framing doesn’t allow for it, you should consider increasing the drain in your shower to 2 inches. Also, If you live in a region where temperatures drop below freezing during the winter, it’s important that your water supply lines don’t get routed through an exterior wall.”
Take a look at the rest of the article here.
Remodeling the bathroom does not necessarily mean the homeowner needs to raise a huge amount. He just has to truly assess what he can afford, assess and plan accordingly, and stick to that budget.

Plumber’s tips on lowering water bills in the summer
Control water consumption
Plumber’s tips on controlling water consumption during summer months. (Photo Credits)
Summer can be a challenging time to bring down water consumption, given the heat and temperature that makes people use water all the more. The garden needs more tending, the children tend to gravitate towards water activities like swimming, or even playing with the sprinkler outside, and people shower or use the bath tubs more.
Fortunately there are ways to control or even bring down water consumption even in the unbelievably hot summer months.
(Related Post: Plumber’s thoughts on Drain Snakes)
The website Earth Easy came up with tips for homeowners who may not want to receive water bill shock. Making use of gravel in the garden or the lawn is one of the tips they have mentioned in their writeup. Plumbing Association of San Diego
“Exposed dirt gets parched after one sunny day, and that baking sun also destroys all the helpful soil microorganisms which support your plants. Spreading gravel in between shrubs and perennial plants not only gives your landscape a stylish beauty, it also allows your soil to stay moist and alive between waterings. You may find you’re able to cut your waterings in half with gravel landscaping, or even convert portions of thirsty grass to a low-maintenance Zen-inspired rock garden accented by well-chosen drought-tolerant trees or shrubs. When you do water your lawn or garden, ditch the sprinkler for hand-watering or soaker-hoses, and consider saving hundreds of gallons per year by collecting your own rainwater.”

Eco-friendly and pocket-friendly too
News 5 Cleveland also mentioned some ways to lower water consumption, and thereby lower water bills. In the news article that they published they mentioned that soaring rates may be caused by increasing sewer costs plus the added cost of replacing parts of the water delivery system like the water mains and pipes. A/C And HVAC

“The biggest culprit during the summer is your yard. Rager said a garden hose or sprinkler runs three gallons per minute: That’s 180 gallons per hour. But he said many people over-water, using hundreds of gallons more than their lawn really needs. His advice: (1) Don’t water more than one inch per week, measured in a tuna can or Solo cup. (2) Never water in the heat of the afternoon: The sun will evaporate almost 30 percent of what comes out of a sprinkler before it even hits the ground. (3) For watering plants, consider buying a rain barrel to capture runoff from your roof. They typically hold 50 to 70 gallons of free water. (4) Around shrubs, Rager suggested laying down a rock garden to hold water.”

The Penny Hoarder meantime shared ways to lower water bills even without altering the household’s consumption habits. Testing the toilet for leaks is one of the ways they tackled in their write-up.
“If you’re flush (pun intended) with cash, you could choose to buy a dual flush toilet. Or you can simply adjust your toilet to help you save money. Put your toilet to the test: Food coloring in the top of the basin should not leak to the bowl without a flush. If it does, you probably need a new fill valve. They’re cheap and easy to change. While you’re there, adjust the float to use less water. The lower the float ball is in a full tank, the less water it uses. Depending on your toilet, you can adjust the screw at the top of the fill tube, screw in the float ball or change the clip lock setting. Set it as low as possible and work backwards until you can flush all waste with the smallest amount of water.”

Lowering water consumption through leak checks and general reduction of usage sould be the most helpful ways to lower utility bills.

Dealing with Insects inside the HVAC duct
Could there be insects?
What to do when insects invade the HVAC Duct? (Photo Credits)
Insects inside HVAC ducts are not only disgusting, it can even bring about illnesses as it pollutes indoor air. But what should a homeowner do if he suspects that there is a presence of insects or rodents within the HVAC ducts?
The website Pest Cemetery came up with an article discussing this topic, and mentioned several ways to get rid of pests and bugs in the HVAC. A/C And HVAC
(Related Post: Solar Air-conditioning 101)
“You could spray around the vent but drywall sucks up liquids and it’s doubtful any residual would be on the surface in enough of an amount to provide a lethal dose. Plus you still may get airborne chemicals when the heat or or a/c turns on. Some vents are vertical and it is difficult place a trap inside, for these types what I sometimes do is place wide strips of clear packing tape over the vent leaving thin slits (1/4 to 1/2 inch wide) so that the air can still come through but when the insect tries to crawl out to freedom he will get stuck and die. Packing tape is great because you can still see into the vent and it usually comes off cleanly whereas masking or duct tape won’t.”

NBC29 also published a feature report on bugs invading an HVAC system. In the article they interviewed a pest control expert who has worked on similar scenarios. Their resource person assured though that while these insects are a nuisance, they do not in any way cause damage to the HVAC system. Plumbing Association of San Diego

The website Vukcan Termite meanwhile shared some tips on how to keep a home’s HVAC system pest free. One of the tips they mentioned in their website is to keep the ducts sealed.
“One of the main entry points for insects is the ductwork. Even the tiniest crack or a loose seal gives them an opportunity to infest the HVAC system. Taking the time to properly seal your ductwork will not only keep bugs out, but it will also help lower your utility bills. Sealing up cracks in the ducts is relatively affordable and easy (where they are accessible). You’ll need foil tape for small cracks and mastic sealant for larger holes. Energy Star has a great brochure that covers all the basics of maintaining your ducts or hiring a pro do to the work for you.”

HVAC expert’s take on window-type air conditioning
Advantages of using window-type aircon
What are the benefits of using a window-type air conditioner? (Photo Credits)
For families who may have been used to centralized air conditioning system, using a window-type air conditioners will be a foreign idea. It of course will never be needed in their home except if there are home extensions that may not be reached by the existing HVAC air ducts in the home.
So for families or business owners who are yet to build a home and are considering various types of air conditioning systems, will installing a window-type be worth it? What are the benefits of using a window type air conditioning system? Plumbing Association of San Diego
The website Home Air Guides explained this type of system in one of their posts.
“Window air conditioners, unlike central air systems, are cooling devices that service only a specific area of the home. A window unit is effortlessly installed into an existing window frame using its own weight and the window’s pane to keep it secure. Depending on the BTUs, the age of the unit, and the insulation quality of the home it’s installed in, a good window air conditioner can cool a fairly large room in a rather short amount of time. These types of temperature control machines are far more affordable than the average whole-house cooling system.”

The website Compact Appliance also mentioned the many reasons why homeowners should consider window mounted air conditioning units. One of the reasons they mentioned in their website is the unit type’s low cost, as well as its energy efficient characteristics. A/C And HVAC
“Extremely Energy Efficient — In my opinion, this is the most important benefit you will receive from a window air conditioner. If you want to stay cool without spending a lot of money, then a window AC unit may just be the perfect system for you. The vast majority of window air conditioners have a great energy efficiency ratio (EER), which gives you a better understanding of how much they cool compared to how much energy they require to run. to truly maximize your energy savings, you will want to look for a window unit with a high EER rating.”

Home improvement website The Spruce meantime shared some tips on installing an using window-type air conditioning systems. In their article they emphasized that the key to efficient cooling for window-mounted units is getting the right size ratio for the room vis-à-vis the unit.
“Always measure the window area before shopping for an air conditioner. Consider the impact of losing a portion of the viewing area, as well as how you’ll fill the rest of the window panel after inserting the air conditioner. Some use wood to block the rest of the pane, but a plastic panel may suffice and look better. When installing a wall unit, the installation may include a certain amount of building supplies and care should be taken to reduce hazards and avoid cutting into electrical or other wires. Window or wall units also need sufficient bracing and you may need an off-season cover.”

Plumber’s advice on improving garden drainage
Garden Plumbing
Best drainage for a home garden. (Photo Credits)
Even the garden is not exempted in experiencing drainage difficulties. It may be outdoors, and most people think evaporation and air will take care of any excess water, but drainage problems can cause trouble in the long run.
The Chicago Tribune came up with an article on drainage problems in the garden and discussed possible solutions on the concern. Plumbing Association of San Diego
“There are different ways to improve drainage, and the best option will depend on each site’s conditions, such as soil type and natural changes in grade. Solutions such as a dry well — a hole dug in the ground and filled with gravel — that do not move water out of the wet area are not worth implementing. That sort of solution is unlikely to improve the drainage in your lawn, as it will quickly fill with water while the surrounding soil remains too wet.”

Types of drainage for the garden
UK-Based gardening blog Fantastic Gardens came up with a comprehensive write-up on garden drainage, how to avoid problems, and what is the best way to address these concerns. They also touched on the different types of garden drainage and mentioned where each type will work best. A/C And HVAC
“While there are myriad of reasons why your garden isn’t draining water properly, here are 10 factors that most likely contributed to your garden’s swamp-like appearance: (1) Underground springs changed their direction as a result of heavy and continuous rainfall. (2) Subsoil and topsoil were mixed together during property construction, creating compacted soil that water has a hard time draining through. (3) Your property and garden have been built on top of a water-retentive clay layer (a pretty common situation in the UK). (4) The garden is situated at the bottom of a hill or lower than those of your neighbours.”

The website This Old House meanwhile shared advice on improving garden drainage. In their advice, they mentioned that property owners have the option of installing something decorative that could complement their garden and at the same time improve its drainage: Swales.
“You can turn landscaping for water drainage solutions into features that enhance your yard—and protect natural waterways. Ditches can be landscaped as swales that look like creek beds or small meadows. Gutter water can flow into rain gardens that provide a habitat for butterflies and birds. And driveways, patios, and walkways can be constructed of pervious paving that never puddles because water seeps through. Since these measures allow storm water to sink into the soil gradually, they help reduce flooding.”

HVAC Experts thoughts on improving air quality
Air quality at home
How important in air quality at home? (Photo Credits)
Indoor air quality is critical in promoting the over-all wellness of the occupants of a home or commercial structure. In fact, it can cause illnesses – short or long term – if it is not kept in check.
The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has certain guidelines on maintaining indoor air quality inside workplaces. And in their official website, they answered as well, frequently asked questions pertaining to their guidelines. Plumbing Association of San Diego
“Indoor air quality (also called “indoor environmental quality”) describes how inside air can affect a person’s health, comfort, and ability to work.  It can include temperature, humidity, lack of outside air (poor ventilation), mold from water damage, or exposure to other chemicals.  Currently, OSHA has no indoor air quality (IAQ) standards but it does provide guidelines about the most common IAQ workplace complaints. What is considered good IAQ? The qualities of good IAQ should include comfortable temperature and humidity, adequate supply of fresh outdoor air, and control of pollutants from inside and outside of the building.”

HVAC’s Role in Indoor Air Quality
A home’s Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system has a lot to contribute in terms of indoor air quality. The United States Environmental Protection Agency discussed this in one of their articles on promoting indoor air quality. A/C And HVAC
“Most home heating and cooling systems, including forced air heating systems, do not mechanically bring fresh air into the house. Opening windows and doors, operating window or attic fans, when the weather permits, or running a window air conditioner with the vent control open increases the outdoor ventilation rate.”

Huffpost meanwhile published an article on how to ensure that the home’s air conditioning unit is not affecting the wellness of the whole family. In that article they tackled how ACs can either be a bane or boon to the health.
“It’s convenient to turn on the AC as soon as the temperature makes you uncomfortable but doing so could be harmful to more than just your wallet. Old and poorly-maintained AC units have been shown as factors in many health conditions, including respiratory conditions and the spread of some diseases. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to minimize any such risks.”

Plumber’s thoughts on Drain Snakes
Are Drain Snakes useful?
Can drain snakes really help in unclogging drainage blockages? (Photo Credits)
Drain Snakes are one of those plumbing tools that even ordinary homeowners without a plumbing background would dare use. For one it is available in local home improvement stores, and secondly, most of the household versions do not look too complicated to use.
Home website Spruce.com explained the different types of drain snakes, and how they could be useful in a home setting.  Plumbing Association of San Diego
“Drain snakes come in several different types, ranging from simple handheld models to powerful motorized augers. The reason for the variety is that there are different types of drains: sink drains, toilet drains, house drains, sewer drains… Here is a look at the most commonly used drain snakes for household clogs. While a plumber might have all of them, you’ll likely need on only one or two, unless you want to rent a big auger for cleaning a sewer drain.”
(Related Post: Plumbing and HVAC Red Flags in a Home for Sale)
Read the continuation here.
But are they really useful?
Apartment Therapy shared their experience in using drain snakes in a household setting. They included the procedures they undertook and then put out a photo guide in their web page. A/C And HVAC
“Snaking the drain is one of those nasty jobs that we put off, and just deal with a clogged or slow draining sink or tub because we don’t want to bother with calling the landlord, or figuring out how to do it ourselves. Like so many things, after we actually do it, we realize it’s just not a big deal and wish we’d done it sooner. It’s also satisfying —and gross.”

“In most cases, drain snakes can be very useful and effective. They are a tool that anyone can use and they often get results. These tools can be pressed down into the pipe and can help break up clogs inside them. They have been known to be effective where other methods such as a plunger or chemicals have not.
