‘She didn’t want to see how much pity was now being directed her way. “All right,” she said, clearing the squeak out of her throat, “one question each. Who wants to go first?” “I will.” Dex leaned closer, and Sophie braced herself for something especially awkward. But all he asked was, “Are you okay?”’ (p. 258)

‘When she looked up, she found his eyes shining with the kind of deep, honest worry that could only be found in the stare of someone who’d “been there”.’ (p. 259)

“If you ever need to talk, I’m here,” he promised. “Thanks,” He started to lean back, but Sophie reached out and pulled him in for a hug. Dex lost his balance for a second. Then he wrapped his arms around her, squeezing as tight as he could. And when he let go a few seconds later, his cheeks weren’t red, and he didn’t look shy or nervous or fidgety. He looked... like her best friend. (p. 259)

TEAM VALIANT IS EVERYTHING I’VE BEEN ASKING FOR

I have my complaints about how drawn out the Keeper series is, but as I’m reading Legacy I’m starting to feel for the first time that this drawn-out-ness actually helps the portrayal of the romantic relationships. The resolution of Sophie’s canonical love square with Dex, Fitz and Keefe has been slow and awkward and startlingly realistic. It wasn’t until that scene in ch 12 where Ro asks Fitz “don’t answer, but consider: what would you do if you Sophie didn’t want to find her bio parents to become matchable?” and Fitz asks “why would she do that?” and ro says “I told you not to answer.” “I didn’t.” and she’s like “yah you did. Keefe let’s go.” and then Fitz asks Sophie if she ever would decide not to search for her bio parents and suddenly she feels trapped and she knows there’s a right answer and she knows there’s a wrong answer but somehow she can’t say either so she just echoes him with “why would I do that?”

And Fitz looked relieved. “Exactly.”

like!!!! that hit me hard!!! and I think it’s because I’ve never read a series with the space and attention to chronicling both the development and decline of teenage romances-- Sophie isn’t moving toward a shining ideal of true love, she’s just sort of stumbling towards the warmth of a relationship that feels right, and that’s not a process that’s fast or easy.

okay but were Tam and Linh’s names.... an intentional reference to the tale of Tam Lin?? on the one hand, I don’t feel like their story has much to do with an old scottish fairy romance, but the literature-loving side of me looks at this folk tale about a girl saving a loved one from the grip of a powerful female ruler by finding him, recognizing him despite attempts by his captors to change him, and then holding to him while he undergoes a series of frightening transformations because he said he would never hurt her and she if she trusts anyone, she trusts him
