SARASWATI • ca. 1680-1700
Folio from a Goddess series
Sarasvati is the goddess of knowledge and mistress of the arts. She is not interested in material possessions, so she is usually dressed in a simple white sari and wears little jewelry, by Indian standards. Her mount is a large white swan, sometimes a peacock. Sometimes seated on a lotus flower, two of her four arms play the vînâ, another holds a book, the Veda, the last a rosary or an elephant hook.
