Devi's ramblings about her own oc x canon ship pt. 2

Now that this part of Betty's past has been revealed (please read Not Like Her - part 4 before reading this if you haven't yet, unless you don't mind spoilers for my comic!), time to talk about my all time favorite contrast between Betty and Pen, that is, the effects of Betty coming from an abusive family, while in my headcanon/theory, Pentious being kind of the neglected black sheep of his family.

Because it really does dictate a lot of their behavior. Pentious, not having received enough attention as a child, seeks people's approval at all costs and has no self-esteem whatsoever beyond the one thing he knows he's good at. He's dramatic and feels like he has to be loud and bold to make himself heard.

In contrast, Betty shies away from attention (especially the negative type) and is very conflict avoidant because she's learned that if she makes herself small and agreeable, she's less likely to get in trouble.

In interpersonal conflict, if unable to separate herself from the situation physically so that she could cry it out where no one would see her, Betty assumes a cold and distant façade, however fragile it is with emotions bubbling right under the surface. She feels that she can't show emotional weakness, or else she risks someone preying on her vulnerability.

On the other end, Pentious immediately resorts to people-pleasing because he's panically afraid of losing the reassurance he practically feeds off of. Luckily for him, his tactic seems to break down the walls Betty builds up pretty easily.

And I often think about Viv saying that Pentious would like a family, even though he wouldn't easily admit it. And the fact that sure, in the context (since it was in response to whether he actually has a son) it probably mostly refers to, y'know, creating a family. Having a loving partner, some kids... but like... Where are HIS parents. What if he wants a family (and he cared so much about Charlie and Lucifer reconciling) because his own didn't give two fucks about him. Meanwhile, Betty only associates having children with misery because she, as a child, told herself that if not for her, if not for the need to "keep the family together", her mom could've left and no one would've had to die when that is very far from the truth and not something she should ever blame herself for.

I don't have any nice way to close this thought. That is all, thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Today marks ONE WHOLE YEAR since this first drawing I posted of them so here's Betty, pulling the same move one year later! Tomorrow we are celebrating as well, with a post answering a q&a I held on Instagram and a compilation of all my favorite moments from the comic, since 14.02 is the day the first comic was posted!

Here's to at least one more year!🤞

Pentious was obviously just recolored into his Heaven design (and I got his head unstretched bc the more I looked at it, the wider it seemed 😭), and while I did put a lot more work into Betty, I used Vaggie's body and Charlie's head as the initial base to work off of.

A bit of a less eventful episode this time. But I guess it works, y'all probably needed a breather 😭

Hurray, Pentious is alive and well- well, in the sense that the wound was pretty surface level. It still caused him to lose quite a lot of blood and hurts like a bitch (bro's held together by adrenaline and sheer force of will at this point

Son boy, boy son (not canon to the timeline, obviously)

Tails isn't even my favorite Sonic character (that title goes to Stone, he's only in the movies but I DON'T CAAAREEE, my only experience with the Sonic franchise is the movies, one of the racing games and clips of the Sonic Boom cartoon anyway 😅) but a follower of mine and I got talking about the movie and I have come to the realization Betty would LOVE this little guy (not to pull the ever so creepy line "he's mature for his age!"... but in this completely innocent context, come on. He's a very smart 8 year old that can carry an intelligent conversation). And he and Pentious have so much to bond over!!

Hello! First of all, thank you for this amazing comic! It has not helped minimize my Pentious hyperfixation, especially when it comes to rotating him in my brain through various scenarios with various characters. Not really a question, but two theories I came up with:

1. In-universe, Molly came up with their ship name. Betty loved it immediately, Pentious didn't get it because "who is thisss Penny you ssspeak of and why is she being ssshipped with my girlfriend?".

2. The Reference Sheet™ says that Betty's grandma is Irish, so I can imagine her having the most petty one sided grudge for Pentious (because British). As in:

"Excuse me, madam, is this ssseat taken?"

"I don't know, have your people colonized it yet?!"

Or:

"Madam, these potatoesss you made are delicious!"

"Yeah, you would like potatoes."

Anyway, thin-foil-theory-craft hat goes off now, sorry.

Waaaah, thank you for the ask!

1. Pentious wouldn't be the only one to not get it. The amount of people still calling Betty "Penny" is staggering 😂

EDIT: @breadinvader now that I think of it, Emily seems like a more likely culprit of coming up with the ship name. Just like Charlie, she's just a ball of sunshine that's too excitable for her own good, hahah

2. I am SO glad you bring it up because yes, that is in fact the dynamic they have. It's hatred at first sight (or at first yap, I guess) 😂

The quips are SO GOOD and so in-character for her, I might have to use them in something 😂

Oh yeah no that's why I said "potentially" and "sometimes". Not basing it on anything in the show in particular (the closest we come to it is ep. 4 I guess) , just how the "sweet lie vs. bitter truth" situations typically go in real life.

Angel's doing the best he can, he knows the "bitter truth" is the way to go, but he's also incredibly traumatized and an addict and it's normal to relapse and feel like the world is against you when everyone just wants you to get better.

Brainrotting about the Cherri - Angel - Husk dynamic again bc as a lover of psychologically charged narratives I find its potential so compelling.

It's the "I love you as you are" (a good sentiment on the surface but not when you're kind of a bad person that makes horrible life decisions) vs. "I love the better You I know you can become" for me, really.

Both Cherri and Husk obviously care about Angel and I don't think Cherri (in her pursuit of cheering Angel up in a way that's always worked before) is a bad friend, but she IS an unhealthy friend. She caters to what Angel wants, even when the things he wants are bad for him. Simply put, she's an enabler, even though she means well.

Meanwhile, Husk teaches and keeps Angel accountable for what he needs. He encourages him to be a better person, even if it's a harder road to take and might, in Angel's eyes, potentially make Husk look like a bad friend sometimes.

They are quite literally an angel and a devil on Angel's shoulders, lol
