I think a consistent quality of the moffat episodes is that they're suspicious of and resistant to assigning a straightforward moral value to "becoming more human." Sometimes the Doctor learning to "be more human" can mean positive things - unlearning some of his time lord prejudices, seeing the value in all life, finding the wonder in the ordinary, becoming less emotionally repressed. But "becoming more human" could also mean becoming less "weird" and alien, or less able to stand outside of and condemn human forms of violence and oppression.

So instead those episodes tend to approach things from more of a "cultural exchange" angle. The Doctor absorb some qualities from his human friends, while always still maintaining a fundemental alienness. And his human friends absorb things from the Doctor, and sometimes end up becoming something very much like the Doctor (Clara, Bill and Heather, Joy), without losing a certain humanity.

Anyway that's why he was awed by the beauty of living in realtime, but still offered Anita a chance to live outside of it. It's about the value of both ways of living, and the value of experiencing both

Damn wait okay. We've got the tardis using telepathy to give a Doctor mirror a second chance by turning her back into a baby. In the same episode where Rose and Mickey are playing out a version of what Rogue seems to imply about the Doctor/Master backstory ("what future can you promise me?" / "am I supposed to wait for you? Because I will!").

And this comes one episode after the Empty Child two parter. Which seems to imply through its mirroring that the Doctor used to be a father and a grandfather, but isn't anymore. And also features someone being haunted by their dead child, and their failure to admit to being that child's parent.

And then a couple seasons later, we get Yana-Master, erasing his memories and turning himself back into a baby.

And then we get Missy's daughter, and Lady Me as a Doctor and Master mirror who outlived her children, and all the hinting that the Doctor ran away from Gallifrey to escape something specific.

And then we get Timeless Children, which does explicitly reveal that the Doctor, and almost-definitely the Master, were memory wiped and de-aged before the start of the series. Which the Doctor appears to have consented to, maybe to escape some unknown sin.

And now we've got a whole storyline built around parental abandonment, and a mysteriously altered memory, and the question of where Susan came from, and the Doctor not admitting to being a parent, and the fictions we treat like reality, and the tardis's godlike telepathic powers, and "I think my daughter died and I forgot." I am tinfoil hatting at the speed of sound btw

bill is by far the funniest companion just bc the order of events before she learns the doctor is an alien. like the normal progression is

meet weird person -> weird person turns out to be an alien -> be dazzled by the wonders of space and time

meanwhile bills is

professor at the uni u work at pays for ur tuition -> u have to write a weird super specific essay each week -> develop genuine friendship w prof -> gf gets turned into space oil -> prof is an alien -> find out prof has a sex dungeon (?) under ur university -> u still have to write an essay every week

just the fact that both dean and cas were perfectly content to live a sex-free romance-free life in a monogamous platonic partnership with one another cause they thought the other couldnt reciprocate in the same way. like not even in a ‘ill take what i can get’ way but in a ‘im truly blessed to share this with you’ way. that is truly a wee bit of unconditional love for love’s sake with no expectation of anything in return innit

what's the most confidently and wrongly a grown adult has ever argued with you - I'll start.

at a work dinner - for scientists - a woman there was convinced that all of sign language was just spelling out words letter-by-letter. she was saying that what we consider sign language is just people spelling out full English words, and she said "it's amazing because it's the only universally-understood language." cue silence from the table.

she fully believed that deaf people in China were spelling out English words letter by letter in ASL to communicate, and that distinct words did not exist. we kept trying to correct her. she replied that it's one of her special interests and she's done extensive research on the subject.

Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.
