Red Road
The movie that I chose to watched is entitled, “Red Road” by Andrea Arnold in which this movie has a sort of deviant theme in United Kingdom. After watching the movie, I was really amazed by Jackie (Kate Dickie) as she was the main character and also the way she act in the movie is quite different. Jackie spend her days monitoring a series of surveillance cameras trained on a rough Glasgow neighborhood. She spot this man namely Clyde (Tony Curran), an ex-convict, on one of the screens, then becomes obsessed with him. When she devises a plan to meet and seduce him, the reason for her obsession becomes clear. Jackie works as a CCTV operator in the movie and each day she watches over a small part of the world, she always protect and ensure the safety of the people living their lives under her gaze. She works 24/7 and was always vigilant to her neighborhood. One day a man appears on her monitor and she never expect it to happen, a man she thought she would never see again, a man she never wanted to see again. Now she has no choice, she is compelled to confront him.
The concept of deviancy that is being portrayed in the movie was that Jackie recognizes a man she sees on the CCTV operator and begins inquiring about him and that was Clyde, a prisoner who has been released early for good behavior but will be back in prison immediately if he steps out of the line. As Jackie begins stalking Clyde, tracking him on the CCTV monitors and gathering information about him. She follows Clyde to a cafe, and later learns he is throwing a party at the apartment he shares with fellow ex-con Stevie. She gains entry to the party and begins exchanging looks with a drunk Clyde. They dance, but she makes an excuse and runs out of the apartment. Clyde and Jackie have passionate sex, but she runs from the bedroom and stages rape, striking her face with a stone and fleeing from the apartment block in view of the CCTV cameras. The police identify Clyde as the rapist and Jackie watches the arrest on CCTV, and a few moments later sees Clyde's daughter approach the apartment block. Later, Stevie gains entry to Jackie's home and demands to know why she has falsely accused Clyde. Jackie reveals that Clyde killed her husband and daughter. Jackie relents and tells the police she wishes to withdraw the accusation of rape. After Clyde's release, Jackie confronts him and they argue: Clyde describes the road traffic accident that killed Jackie's husband and daughter, and she reveals that her last words to her daughter were harsh. She tells Clyde that his daughter tried to reach him on the day of his arrest, and they go their separate ways.
Example of Deviance Movie (Positive Context) Jackie works as a CCTV operator and each day she watches over a small part of the world, she always protect and ensure the safety of the people living their lives under Jackie’s gaze. She begins stalking Clyde, tracking him on the CCTV monitors and gathering some information to find a better solution about him specifically Clyde. Jackie did everything just to find a better solutions to the problem despite facing some challenges in her life. She observed everything and begins to inquire this man in order for her satisfactory. She gains entry to the party and begins exchanging looks with a drunk Clyde. They dance, but she makes an excuse and runs out of the apartment.
Example of Deviance Movie (Negative Context)
In the movie, Jackie behaved in a way that failed to meet accepted norms as she relents and tells the police she wishes to withdraw the accusation of rape. After Clyde's release, Jackie confronts him and they argue: Clyde describes the road traffic accident that killed Jackie's husband and daughter as she was trying to blame Clyde for killing her family. She reveals that her last words to her daughter were harsh. The movie is quite complicated because Jackie as a member of the operator surveillance on the screen, in the views of the government and society they were exhibiting negative deviance. They refused to conform to the rules even though everyone else is blindly did what society said.

How do you relate to both of these characters? What are the characteristics which made you feel good/bad towards these two characters?
Therefore, I feel bad and disappointed at the same time to Jackie for blaming Clyde as the killer of her husband and daughter. But on the other hand, at some point, I feel good when Jackie works as a CCTV operator and does everything in order to protect and ensure the safety of the people living their lives under her gaze. She used to protect her neighborhood from bad people. She did everything just to monitor Clyde and find a better solution through gathering of information about Clyde. In the end, it seems like Jackie failed to meet accepted norms. In the views of the government and society they were exhibiting negative deviance. They refused to conform to the rules even though everyone else is blindly did what society said and I can’t relate to any of this. There were just a time where we can feel good and bad sometimes along the way and while in the process of looking answers and better solutions.
