In Avengers: 1 Thor says the experiments on tesseract is what drew chitari's interest and sent a signal that earth is ready for higher form of war. It's only been less than a year since shield started studying tesseract and they didn't even have a harness according to Dr. Selvig. That means there experiments are just basic. But there is someone who was successful in harnessing tesseract's energy and created weapons. Dr. Zola. During his first experiment the energy fried all the electronics nearby just like when Loki used tesseract. What if that energy surge is went into space? It is a known fact it takes years for energy to travel from one galaxy to another. And I think 70years is appropriate time for an alien who is couple of galaxies away to come across and find the source of tesseract energy surge. And both Dr. Zola's experiment and battle of Newyork are exactly 70years apart.
