hellooo can i ask you something? you are from philly right? i saw ryanne's ig story from today and it was gavin standing in front of a store window and there were varying sizes of grittys.. how is philly in regards to gritty? bc i'm from europe and i love him obviously but he's almost more like a meme to me so i'm just wondering just how much of a celebrity gritty really is? i'm sorry if this is a weird question lmao

philly is very fond of gritty (now, anyway). when he was first released the overall reaction was what the fuck is this, it looks terrible, but then he threatened the pittsburgh penguins’ mascot iceburgh on the very first day. 

everyone immediately switched from “this thing is weird and sucks” to “this thing might be weird and suck but it’s OUR thing that’s weird and sucks and anyone else can fuck off.”

the city of philadelphia is like... i don’t know how to entirely explain it but it’s a city with character, of characters, and gritty is and was exactly the brand of kind of menacing weird that appeals to everyone. almost immediately after gritty threatened iceburgh the tide on reddit turned to posts like this:

a city council member put forth the following resolution, which was adopted by the council:

we are a city with other very recognizable mascots, but gritty is in a league of his own. honestly hockey is not the most popular sport in the city (flyers fans are die hard and the farg attendance is always good, but it’s definitely nowhere near as popular as eagles or sixers), but everyone knows gritty. gritty signs and costumes regularly make appearances at various kinds of protests (for example during the count the vote dance party following the 2020 election). gritty merchandise is a hot commodity. almost every halloween party you could go to pre-pandemic definitely featured at least one gritty, probably several.

so: to answer your question, philly is very fond of him, and he’s sort of transcended hockey. he’s kind of a meme here too, but in a very intrinsically philadelphia sort of way (i could go on and on A LOT about what philadelphia is and means but like... no one needs to hear that lmao. but trust me when i say that gritty is a very philadelphian avatar).
