of course, he hadn’t seen her coming. the tap on his shoulder is enough to get his attention, is almost enough to make him jump, but he manages to regain his composure right on time. glancing at the girl, if it wasn’t obvious from her speech that she was foreign, well, her looks gave it away for sure.

he gives her a moment to see if she’ll finish the sentence, but decides to give it a try himself after it’s been a minute or two.

his english is certainly a bit rusty, but, he can try. better than fumbling about. 

“ah–um, where are you trying to go?”

          fingers   fiddle   with   each   other,   nerves   shot.   she   didn’t   want   to   be   that   annoying   newcomer   that   just   ran   around   confused   and   ended   up   saying   something   either   completely   rude   or   nonsensical   due   to   her   understanding   of   the   language   being   minimal.  

          eyes   light   up   when   the   other   speaks   english,   and   she   takes   a   sigh   of   relief.

          eyes   scan   away   as   she   focuses   downward,   fingers   pulling   through   a   few   of   the   pages   of   the   guide   on   the   subway.   it   was   hard   to   focus,   especially   with   the   clamoring   noise   that   seemed   to   simply   just   radiate   from   such   a   mass   of   people.  

          eyebrows   furrow   as   she   attempts   to   get   some   indication   to   where   she   was   going.   it   had   taken   a   lot   for   her   to   get   here,   but   now   that   she   was   ...   she   was   simply   and   utterly   lost.  

          well,   this   was   the   first   time   she   was   in   a   different   country   after   all.      

          she   gently   taps   the   person   beside   her,   a   question   in   subpar   japanese.

She… hadn’t been. Hoshi in question was trying to find a decent selection that was on the shelves which wouldn’t require asking for assistance, but she moved before he could tell her that there wasn’t an issue to be had. Speaking of it would just make an awkward situation where it wasn’t necessary, so he gazed back to the books once more to find anything that would be at least remotely interesting to waste time on.

Until she had asked another question. There was something familiar in her voice, but the prisoner brushed it off as nothing important. “Quite the American book you’re looking for. You might have to go to an import store for something like that. Or maybe online, stores might not even carry it.”

Which was quite a depressing thing to tell anyone, let alone a girl just looking for a book, but a sad truth nonetheless. “I’m sure there are alternatives around here that might be interesting to you.” Or not, it was an assumption to make, but hopefully there was something there that wouldn’t leave her walking out in disappointment.
