Niels A. Douwes Dekker, In the south, the famous volcano Krakatau seems to be a prolongation of the Bukit Barisan range. After being dormant for 200 years this volcano erupted in 1883, killing 36,000 people. The ‘half’ mountain in the background is the most important remnant. The volcanic formation in the fore ground appeared long after the disaster. 1962.
