liking a character for what they have the potential to be even though in canon they’re a lot less faceted that what you want to envision in your head

Man, sometimes I think about New Dawn and how it could've meant so much more to me. I love my Captain and I made him into a fleshed out protagonist through my own exploration of his character, but Rush and company just felt like a justification for the base building mechanic. There was no connection to the locals of Hope County. No emotional weight.

You know what I would've liked to have seen? Carmina as the main character, bridging the gap between Prosperity and New Eden when she was expressly forbidden to. Desperate times call for desperate measures and all that.

I would've liked the Judge's identity not be known until the very end of the game, but people like Sharky, Kim, and previous companions have suspicions. When they go home after Prosperity and celebrate, Judge unmasks themselves to everyone and the final line the game closes on is, "Dep."

Being best friends with Sharky Boshaw would include:

Clicking immediately with Sharky from the moment you two met just based on his music choice alone - how can you dislike disco?

Jokes. All the jokes, all the time and they’re not even that funny but if you can make each other laugh then that’s a win.

Sharky forever giving you compliments whenever you feel down or not yourself. He hates seeing his best friend sad.

You doing the same for him because he more than deserves it, plus hearing him talk shit about himself pulls at your heart.

Doing nothing but watching stupid shows, eating all the bad food and drinking beer.

Being able to talk to him about anything and everything even if he doesn’t always say the right thing. This goes for him too; he’ll always come to you especially when it comes to massages - not that it works but you can’t blame a guy for trying.

Sharky showing you how to use his flamethrower even though you almost set him and yourself on fire.

Road trips and singing badly to all the songs.

Both of you being grateful for the other and not being afraid to defend each other when the situation calls for it.

Sharky gives the best hugs so you can expect all of them when you need it, and when you don’t but who would complain.

Having inside jokes and a secret handshake that usually makes people shake their heads.

Singing along to the songs in the Spread Eagle usually drunk but it’s entertaining for the rest of the patrons.

Drunken stargazing and Sharky pointing out, well trying to point out the constellations and failing spectacularly.

Sharky’s heart was full of joy. After 17 fucking years of loneliness, he’d finally found his soulmate again. Those 17 years without his Deputy were the hardest of his life and, without Blade, he would’ve lost it. But, as soon as he saw the Judge, he knew who they were. Of course he knew ! The atmosphere had just shifted and his heart had started pounding in his chest. It didn’t take long for them to go back to the way things were before The Collapse. Sharky had never stopped loving the Deputy and, apparently, neither did she. Only bump on the road was the silence. Her silence. She was never much of a talker, but this was different. Not a word got out of her mouth while Sharky professed his undying love for her. He had quickly understood she wouldn’t talk again… And he started missing the sound of her voice even more than he had when she was away from him.

Finally, he reluctantly went to Joseph, seeking explanation for his lover’s silence. The ex cult leader explained to him how guilty she had felt in the bunker and the vow of silence she had made in order to punish herself for her horrible actions. Sharky felt the Deputy’s pain, angry he wasn’t there to help her go through it. When he got back to Prosperity, she was asleep and he took advantage of that to call a meeting. The former Hope County residents gathered in the ranch and Sharky told them everything Joseph had said.

“So, I’m gonna need you guys’ help, right ? I wanna help her. I couldn’t do it before, but… But now I have to.” Everyone nodded in response and they all made plans and strategies in order to get her to talk again.

The first ones to try were Nick and Kim. One evening, they sat down with her and talked about the past… Starting with the first time she and Nick met, when she heroically took back his plane and they protected his house together. I’ll hit ‘em high, you hit them low ! What do you say, partner ? They could’ve swore they heard a faint giggle behind the Judge’s mask…

Wanna come meet your goddaughter ? When they talked about Carmina’s birth, she joined them in the room, sitting between her father and godmother. “Remember how Kim almost broke my hand, yeah ?” Carmina laughed and the Judge smiled, even if no one could see it.

Later, Nick and Kim left and Carmina remained alone with her godmother. “They talked about you almost everyday. They wanted you to teach me how to live and… somehow, you did. I learned a lot listening to all their stories about you.” At that, she leaned down to hug the woman she had just met but felt strangely close to. The Deputy sobbed behind her mask. She had felt lonely for so long… She looked at the young woman her goddaughter had became and wondered if, maybe, she had finally found a family.

A few days later, Hurk was holding Blade when he ran into the Deputy. Remembering his talk with Sharky, he took the opportunity and handed Blade to the Judge, “Mind holding the little guy for a minute ?” And, without any warning, he dropped his son in the woman’s arms and ran away. Stuck with a mini Hurk, the Judge tried her best to distract him. The kid was laughing and holding her hands. She thought about Sharky and how close he was to the little kid in front of her… She wondered if she would be part of his life as well ; oh god, she hoped she would. When Hurk came back, he was sure he heard a little “Hi kiddo” leave the Deputy’s lips.

A few days passed. The Deputy was a bit more expressive, giggling and sighing softly… But still now words.

One night, she was laying down next to Sharky. Her mask was off and he was gently stroking her hair. He started humming a song and, after a while, she imitated him and he beamed when he heard the faint sounds coming from her.

“I missed hearing you sing,” he whispered. “I remember when you sang those dumbshit cult songs in the car… God, they were so stupid. But yeah, somehow, I miss it.”

“You’re such an idiot.”

Her voice was sore and weak. For a long minute, Sharky simply thought he had imagined her response. When he finally processed what had just happened and looked at her, she was smiling. He cradled her face with his hands and kissed her passionately, smirking shyly under her lips.

Once her broke the kiss, he shot her a questionning look, wondering why she had finally changed her mind. Suddenly he was the one who couldn’t talk…

“I made a vow of silence because I felt alone and decided to punish myself for my past…” she started, tears slowly filling her eyes. “But I don’t care about my past anymore. I’m not alone ; I’ve got you. You’re my future. And it’s the only thing that matters. I’m home.”

Her hands linked around Sharky’s neck as she pulled him closer to kiss him again.

“Well shit honey, you sure know how to make me cry,” he sobbed, hiding his face in the crook of her neck.

She laughed out loud and it was the most beautiful sound Sharky had ever heard.
