Just your ordinary dental student, trying to keep a positive outlook on it all through the mounds and mounds of work. "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." - Ephesians 4: 1-2

Hey guys, I'm pretty sure a lot of my followers are still in dental school, so I figured I'd post an occasional case here and maybe it will help someone out! I'm by no means an expert but if I can help even one person that's pretty cool! Back when I was in school, I was always taught to choose the biggest cord that would fit in the sulcus. I always found it frustrating and tough to pack. Thanks to recommendations on instagram from @dr_bedrossian, I've started using 000 followed by 00. I've never been more pleased with my impressions since starting that technique. Always strive for improvement. Crown preps on 8&9 could have been better, but overall pleased with this appt.

Guys, I passed boards, graduated, and am officially a licensed dentist in the state of Missouri. Thanks for hanging with me during this crazy long ride. I honestly never thought the day would come when school would finally be over. For all the dental students out there, keep on trucking. School sucks, but I promise you will overcome all the diversity. Your graduation day will be here before you know it. Enjoy the process, and celebrate every victory, no matter how small. I'm hoping to be able to post more cases and photos on here in the future, but in the meantime, feel free to send me any questions you may have about dentistry/dental school (I don't have all the answers, but hey fake it till you make it). For real, thanks for all the encouragement and telling me everything is gonna be ok. You guys are the best. Here is a picture of my wife and I right after I got my diploma. She is my rock, and my steadfast love. Xoxo, Alan

Guys, I'm so nervous for the NBDE part 2. It's in one week, and I still don't have a perio patient locked down. Tell me it's going to be ok. Also, it's been a while, and I'm still alive.

HEY Y’ALL REMEMBER WHEN I LIKED ENDO. pshhhhhhhhhh D2 Alan actually had some fucks left to give apparently hahaha.
Oh hey real dentistry! Post and core on a molar where we sectioned off the root so we could see how much dentin was left on either side of the tooth. I actually don’t mind endo, even though I came in with the opinion that it was a specialty straight from hell. The next couple weeks are filled with tests and pract..OH I DONT CARE GET ME OUT OF SECOND YEAR ALREADY.

I WANT NOTHING MORE THAN TO PULL EVERY TOOTH OF THE PARENTS THAT TELL THEIR CHILD HOW TERRIBLE THE DENTIST IS. Seriously, just because you are incapable of accepting gratitude in the form of dental treatment doesn't mean your child can't.
PSA
Parents. If you’re afraid of the dentist, that’s ok. If you’ve had a bad, traumatic, or painful experience before, that’s ok. If you choose not to seek dental treatment, that’s your decision. However, if you choose to bring your child to a dentist, especially a student dentist at a dental school, do yourself and more importantly your child a favor, and shut the hell up. Did you ever think that the child doesn’t know that they should be scared but that they’re mirroring what you’re doing? Treating children is difficult enough, even without your inadvertent sabotage. Do everyone a favor and just stop.

Hey guys, I've gotten a lot of new followers in the past month and so welcome to my hot mess of a dental school life. If you love sarcasm and self-depreciation with the occasional love proclamation to my fiancé, then you have found the right blog! Just wanted to to remind all the dental students out there how important it is to take some time for your physical and mental health. There is always something to do in dental school, but don't forget that it's ok to have a life outside of school and to slack off a bit. If that means you have to sleep during class or while studying for boards, do it. Not that I know from experience or anything....

Today I saw a patient in his 80s who had Alzheimer’s and was pretty cardiac complex. He couldn’t remember some of the procedures he had had done on his heart, so I went and grabbed his wife from the lobby. She came back and was so gentle and patient with her husband. She would gently remind him that he had his medical card (with procedures) in his pocket and allowed him space to get it out himself and hand it to me. She then would kindly remind him of everything he has had done, and he would say, “Oh yeah, that’s right. Now I remember!” He was so excited when he would remember something. She could have easily just told me herself, but she wanted to include him in the conversation. Needless to say, I’m literally sitting at the computer fighting back tears at this point because what’s going on is breathtakingly beautiful. To see so much love in an impossibly difficult situation was so moving. I can’t imagine what it is like to wake up next to someone who is slowly forgetting the past 65 years you have spent together. Thank you to this couple, who showed me that love can win out even in the most dire situations.

I wonder what it’s like being 28 and waking up knowing you’re going to ask her to marry you tonight. I wonder what it’s like being 30 and waking up to her gone for the week on a work trip and having the entire bed to yourself for the first time in ages so you starfish the fuck out of it, but somehow drift over to their side because you already miss them. I wonder what it’s like being 42 and waking up for work content that the same pair of tired eyes as yesterday, and the day before that, and for the past 13 years, still look at you like you have the ability to reverse time and stop the sun from rising any higher, then you could both stay in bed. You blink, smile, and kiss her forehead softly as a reply, silently acknowledging your shared distaste for mornings, but not apologizing for wanting to wake up to those eyes again tomorrow. I wonder what it’s like being 49 and waking up beside someone who still makes you nervous when they look at you that close up in the morning, especially now that you’re nearing 50 and fully aware of the wrinkles you have and the ones on the way. I wonder what it’s like being 61 and waking up at 2pm because you were too sore and sickly to get out of bed that morning, but when you hear her key in the door after coming back from the store with some medicine, your favourite soup and a kiss, it still makes your heart beat fast enough to propel you off the bed and into her healing arms. I wonder what it’s like being 87 and waking up next to an undisturbed pillow and an unwrinkled half of a quilt because she died 2 years ago, peacefully in her sleep. It was just her time to go. I wonder what it’s like to live life in that much love. And when you do, I wonder what it’s like to lose it to something as trivial as your body passing through time. It’s heartbreaking that the body can’t last as long as the love between two people. But it’s also kind of beautiful that love transcends physical nature. All we can do is experience it while it’s here and while it lasts.
Holy fuck (via andimissallthelittlethings)
Me: Oh this is sweet. Ugh its so so so sweet. aw thats so WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO THAT AT THE END TEARS EVERYWHERE HEART BE STILL.

She's the best.
My relationship with wedding planning:
“I’m so chill! I’m ahead of schedule. We really don’t have anything left to do for a couple months”
30 seconds later…
“IVE DONE NOTHING” PANICPANICPANICPANIC. *rapidly shoots off 50 texts and 10 emails regarding some sort of wedding aspect*
