summary: an accident that may have been more than just an accident brings two people even closer than before.
part one
Ever since that night of the accident I’ve felt weird… weird on a molecular level. I could feel the cells that make up by DNA being reborn with every second that passes.
I gasp, inhaling deeply as if I’ve been denied oxygen for my entire life. “Where am I?” I ask, squinting my eyes at the bright lights. Noticing a bunch of people standing over me, panic sets in.
I claw at the material that covers my body. “Where am I?” I repeat. “You’re in the hospital. You were in an accident, but you are safe now. Your body is healing at an amazing rate. I’ve never seen this happen before.”
Pieces of the scene come back to me. I was in the car with my family driving to the supermarket. We were singing along to the radio when the highway suddenly cracked open. Cars crashed into one another, some fell into the crack, while others were being lifted into the sky-
That’s not possible. “T-the beam in the sky” I say. A doctor sighs, “this must be the trauma speaking. You were in a regular car accident Meredith.”
“My family” I say. “They’re in the waiting room. They’re fine.”
The door to my bedroom opens. “Sweetie it’s time to go to school. I can drive you” my mother says. I immediately shake my head, “that’s okay. I’ll walk.”
Her face becomes full of worry. I smile reassuringly at her in hopes of easing her emotions. “You’ll get there one day, right?” she asks. I nod, “right. Just not today.”
The walk to school is about fifteen minutes. By the time I reach my locker my chest heaves up and down as I try to catch my breath. “Walked again?”
I look to my right at my best friend, Lia, “like I do everyday.” She nods while beginning to open her locker.
My hand reaches for the notebook I use during lab but recoils once it comes into contact with the metal spiral rings.
There was a jolt of electricity that burned a whole straight through the book. I stare in disbelief with wide eyes. “You okay?” Lia asks peeking her head into my locker. “Fine!” I exclaim, slamming it shut.
“Let’s go” I mumble. She squeals when I grab her hand and pull her towards the classroom. A pair of eyes on me demands my attention. I search the hallway until I meet his eyes.
All the commotion around us begins to slow down. Everything becomes so still as if time really did stop. I look behind me and Lia is frozen. Her hair, flowing behind her, is stuck in place from when I pulled her.
I quickly look back at him and notice his movement. Everyone else is frozen except for us. My eyes close and reopen, “warn me next time you want to rush to class.”
“Huh?” I turn my head. “I said warn me next time you want to rush to class. Are you sure you’re okay?” Lia asks.
“I’m okay.”
“I’m so not okay” I say to myself in the mirror. This could be some weird dream that I’m stuck in. All I need to do is wake up.
“I don’t have time for this” I sigh. I check my phone and realize I’ve been in the bathroom for ten minutes. Whether this is a dream or not I don’t want to get detention.
I grab the hall pass and take a step for the door. My body heats up, my hands tingle, and my legs rush forward. In a split second I’ve reached the door.
“Okay who slipped something in my breakfast?”
The door opens, making things very awkward as a girl I’ve never seen before stares at me with the most confused expression on her face.
“Um I’m practicing for my drama class, bye” I blurt before pushing past her.
I try my best to keep my feet planted to ground despite my head feeling like its in the clouds. The clicking sound of a classroom door opening and a, “hey” halts my movement.
It’s him.
“Hi Joel” I reply. “Are you going to be at club later?” he asks. I bite my lip in thought, “I don’t know. I’m not feeling well.”
“Oh, feel better” he mumbles then walks off. To make the day weirder, I notice a yellow streak behind him as he walks towards the bathroom.
“I’m feeling much better” I say to the group. “Thank you for sharing” our leader, Susan, responds. I nod and smile shyly at the rest.
I ended up going to club today because I started to feel less… odd after eating lunch.
“Now in two days it’ll be the anniversary of the accident so I want to know how you’re all feeling about that” Susan says.
As the words left her mouth I could feel everyone in the room tense up. I hadn’t even realized it will be five months since the accident. That explains a lot.
“Um” Joel clears his throat, “I’m nervous but I’m planning on driving to school that day.”
A few people gasps. “That’s wonderful! I’m proud of you” Susan replies.
His tan cheeks grow a tint of pink, “thanks.”
“Anyone else care to share?”
We all remain silent and stiff. She sighs, “alright if no one feels comfortable enough then we can be dismissed for the day.”
I quickly gather my belongings and wait for Joel outside of the school building. “Wait up” I yell after noticing he walked right past me.
He trips over his own feet at my voice. “Sorry” I mumble once I caught up to him. He smiles in response.
“You’re really driving to school on Friday?” I ask. He nods, “I’m going to try.”
“If you want I can um- I can go with you” I say. His eyes widen, “you would?”
I nod. “Okay I’ll pick you up then. Still live next to the laundromat?”
I nod again.
Three knocks on the door.
knock, knock, knock
She’ll walk in and offer to drive me to school. “Morning sweetie. I’m leaving for work now. Want me to drop you off at school?” my mom asks.
I would usually shake my head and say I’ll walk, but not today.
“That’s okay mom. Joel is picking me up in a few minutes.”
“You’ll get ther- wait excuse me?” she asks, flustered. “Joel” I say, grabbing my book bag off the floor, “is going to pick me up,” I swing one strap onto my arm.
“And you’re driving there?’ she asks. I nod, “he wanted to try since today is ….”
She cuts me off with a wave of her hand, “I know. No need to mention it. I’m glad you two are going to try. Be safe and call me when you get to school.” She kisses me on the cheek and leaves.
“We’re safe” I say. Joel hums, “we’re safe.”
He told me he tried driving to my house by himself but he couldn’t. He walked here and had his older brother who works nearby drop off the car.
We both stare out the windshield in silence. “I don’t mind walking” I break the silence.
“No!” he exclaims, “no” he repeats in a quieter tone. “We can do this. I can do this.”
His shaky hands reach for the keys. A second later the engine roars.
“Here we go” he mutters. His foot presses down on the gas pedal surging us forward.
My hand reaches for his chest, grabbing a fistful of his shirt.
“Do you want to take the streets or the highway?” he asks. “If we want to face our fears all in one day then the highway.”
The car continues down the road, makes a left turn, and a right turn onto the highway.
Everything goes smoothly for the next five minutes.
“This isn’t too bad” he says still gripping the wheel so tight his knuckles are white.
“This feels like a good time for something to go wrong” I say.
The words barely finish leaving my mouth when the car slows down. “W-what are you doing?” I ask.
“I’m not doing anything” he replies. The car comes to a complete stop. I look out the window in fear of a car being closely behind us. All the other cars on the highway come to a halt.
“Joel, how are we doing this again?” I ask hinting at the time in the hallway. “Look Mere” he says, poking my arm. I look down and gasp at the sight. Purple streaks of what looks like lightning bolts flow from my body.
My eyes meet his and I gasp once again. “Your eyes!”
He looks in the rear mirror and sees his own eyes flickering with small yellow lightning bolts.
“Wha-“
He stops speaking when he feels the car being lifted off the ground. The same beam I saw during the accident is back. “Do you recognize it? Are we being abducted by aliens?” I ask beginning to have a panic attack.
“I-I don’t know! Hey calm down, we’re fine. We’re together. We’re safe” he says, placing a hand on my shoulder.
“We’re safe” I repeat.
Everything goes black.
A sharp pain in my head wakes me. I groan as my eyes adjust to the purple aura around me. “Joel!” I yell, looking around.
My eyes begin to adjust to the beautiful scenery around me. The sky is a lavender color, the tall trees have leaves of all colors of the rainbow, the buildings are very advanced looking with architecture I’ve never seen, and the stream is full on neon colored fish leaving bright streaks behind them in the water.
“Mere?” I hear Joel call.
“Oh good you’re both up” a light voice says. I am transported to a room high up in the sky. I look down at the scenery that was once so close.
“What is this? Where am I?” I ask. “Turn around and see dear.”
I hesitantly turn around and sigh of relief when I see human looking creature, maybe a few years older than me, rather than scary beings.
Joel grabs my hand, “are you okay?” I look to my right at him and nod, “you?” He nods.
“Now you’re probably wondering who I am” the person says. “Yes. Also, where are we?” I ask.
“I am Alkaya, which means summer in old english, so feel free to call me that” she replies. She walks down the steps to be eye level with us.
“You are on earth. The year 3050” she continues. “You’re saying we’re in the future right now?” Joel asks.
Summer nods, “the year 3050.”
“Can you tell us why? What’s going on? I’m just so… confused?” I say.
“On this day 5 months ago, a dangerous criminal escaped from his confinement. He had powerful technology which he used to travel back to your time so he could be free. When he reached your time, he caused a serious accident that you two are aware of. My team and I followed him once we were alerted, but he had already caused chaos by beaming some people to random time periods and damaging your highways. I had to do something quickly so I looked in the database of influential people from your time period and chose you two. I saved your families in the accident and injected you with the serum.”
My eyebrows scrunch up, “what serum? And what do you mean you were there? I didn’t see you.”
She laughs, “of course you didn’t. I was so quick you didn’t see me. The serum…”
She picks up a black box from the floor, “the serum that gave me my powers. It’s from a flower not known to your time. A few years ago humans discovered a bunch of new flowers and plants that helped us advance. This serum is guarded by my family, who is apart of the high council, so only we get to control what to do with it.”
The black box opens revealing a topaz colored glowing liquid.
Joel holds his finger up to interject, “you said influential people. What do you mean by that? What does any of this have to do with us?”
“The database is a more advanced version of textbooks essentially. You two do great things in the future that I do not want to spoil. I knew you were kind and smart people so I chose to inject you with the serum so you could help my team and I save your world and ensure our future.”
if I thought my head was spinning before, I was wrong. My thoughts are moving at a million miles per hour.
“I know this a lot to take in, but we found an update on Ekan’s whereabouts recently. You two need to start training” she says.
“So the lightning bolts and the speed that’s apart of our powers?” I ask.
She nods, “you are a hub of electricity. You can do many things and manipulate your cells. Our top trainer will teach you some neat tricks to help us defeat Ekan.”
“We need to go home” Joel says. “We’ll go back to the day of the accident first, then I can drop you two off from the moment where you left. It’ll be like you were never gone” Summer says.
“Do we have a choice in this?” I ask. She nods, “of course you do. However, if you want to save the ones you love and make sure I have a future then you will help me.”
Joel and I make eye contact, “we’ll help.”
Joel and I have been walking silently following the stream down its path.
He clears his throat, “this is crazy huh?” “Crazy doesn’t even begin to describe this.”
“So super speed” he continues. I stop walking and lock eyes with him. My cheeks heat up at the memory, “I was rushing to get back to class from the bathroom. Right before I saw you actually and it just happened.”
“I thought I was going insane because of the accident, but I- I burned a whole through three pairs of jeans” he replies.
We both laugh. We laugh and laugh until it feels like our bodies are going to combust.
The hectic day finally catches up to us as we lose ourselves in laughter.
Strange looks from those passing eventually helps us calm down. “We’re in the future Joel” I say. A smirk spreads across his face, “we are.”
I reach for his hand and interlock mine with his. A jolt of electricity rises up my arm straight to my heart. Although I’m not too sure if my heart skipping a beat has much to do with that or more so, him.
“Let’s go explore” he says. He stands looking beautiful as ever with the lavender sky and the neon streaks from the stream illuminating his skin. He looks ethereal.
“Let’s go explore” I say.

dog walking (zabdiel de jesus one shot)
Tumblr media
pairing: you x zabdiel
rating: t
summary: zabdiel is a new hire who shadows you for a weekend leading him to develop a crush on you
Six months after graduation is the grace period before payments for student loans begin. Six months to find a stable, paying job.
After working tirelessly for four years for a degree, I still had very little faith in a piece of paper helping me obtain a proper job. My pessimism was just as the only promise of a job for me is being promoted from an unpaid intern to a full time employee at the local law firm I work with.
Dog walking has become my favorite activity. For one, I get to see dogs every weekend and two, I get paid. I’ve been working at this agency for a few months now, but I’m still the newest employee.
… or at least I was.
“Zabdiel is going to shadow you this weekend. Next weekend he’ll be on his own, but I trust you to take good care of him” my supervisor, Emily, said.
I smiled at the blonde boy and nodded, “of course you’re in good hands.”
Currently I was holding on to four leashes, two in each hand. Zabdiel most likely wanting to impress on his first day offered to walk the other four dogs so we could get two trips done in one.
“Slow down buddy” I whisper to the golden retriever pulling me towards the dog park.
I can feel Zabdiel’s gaze on me, “so what made you apply?” I look up and surely enough he was staring.
“Oh-“ he quickly averts his gaze to the dogs, “I needed a new job.”
I open the gate to the park, “what happened with your previous one?”
I bend down and am bombarded with being sniffed. I unhook their leashes and let the dogs run free. “I usually take them here and let them run around for about an hour.”
Zabdiel nods, bending down to unhook their leashes, “I got bored of it.” He laughs, “turns out being a librarian is not for me.”
We take a seat on a bench in the shade. “Yeah when I look at you I definitely don’t see a librarian.”
“Where were you months ago?” he asks with a quick laugh at the end. “Sorry I wasn’t there to help, but I am now. How are you liking the job so far?”
“I think I’ll be very happy here” he smiles.
zabdiel: where are you?
you: I’m at work
zabdiel: um no you’re not??
you: oH I only work at the agency on the weekends
zabdiel: what why???
you: I have an internship during the week
zabdiel: boo :( gotta go
zabdiel: have a good day at your internship
you: thank you :) you too! .. have a good day at work
you: hey how are you doing?
zabdiel: I need it to be Saturday
you: got something exciting planned for Saturday?
zabdiel: no I work, but you’ll be here
you: aw :) just two more days
zabdiel: two more days of Lisa driving me crazy. She keeps making me do half of her work because she thinks I don’t notice.
you: I’ll speak to her
zabdiel: noooo you don’t have to
you: not up for debate
zabdiel: ugh fine. See you Saturday!
“Good morning” Zabdiel says in a singsong voice. “Good morning to you too Zabdiel.”
He shoves a cup of iced coffee in front of my face, “got this for you.”
I smile at the kind gesture, “thank you. You didn’t have to.. really.” He shakes his head, “I wanted to. Want to do a run together?”
“Yeah sure let me just clock in first.”
zabdiel: the weekend goes by too fast
you: tell me about it :/
zabdiel: you always respond at this time are you on break or something?
you: yup! Lunch is from noon to one
zabdiel: ah okay
you: aren’t you supposed to be working?
zabdiel: don’t judge me!! :( it’s a slow day
you: hmm lucky
zabdiel: you jinxed me someone just walked in. I’ll see you tomorrow.
you: tomorrow?
zabdiel: for lunch. Text me your work address.
“I can’t believe you actually came to see me” I say as he engulfs me in a hug. “I told you I would didn’t I?”
“Mhm, what do you want for lunch?” I ask. “Honestly I really want a bagel.”
My eyes widen, “a bagel for lunch?” He laughs, “I didn’t get to eat breakfast so that’s what I’m craving. A bagel and coffee.”
I shake my head, “alright then that’s what we’re going to get.”
We walk across the street to a small coffee shop. “Two toasted bagels with jelly and two medium hot coffees with milk and sugar please” I say at the register.
“Will that be all?”
I nod while reaching into my purse. “Put that away” Zabdiel says at the sight of my card. “No you put yours away!”
In the split second of silence I hand my card to the cashier. “You are so mean” he replies.
“Am not. If anyone is being mean right now it’s you.”
The cashier returns my card, “you two are cute together.”
At the comment Zabdiel and I share a glance full of awkward tension.
“Oh-“ “thank you-“ we say at the same time.
“Why’d you say thank you?” I ask while taking a seat across from him. “Just cause.”
zabdiel: so the agency is closed tomorrow
you: mhm
zabdiel: so we’re both free
you: bold of you to assume
zabdiel: never mind
you: I’m kidding! Go on…
zabdiel: go on a date with me
you: just say the time and place
“You look beautiful” he says. “Thank you” I reply, twirling around.
“So where are we going?” I ask. “Since our first time hanging outside of work was at a coffee shop I figured we’d step it up a notch and go to a cat cafe.”
My hands clap together, “ooooo yes yes I like that!” He smiles, “good.. it would’ve been awkward if you didn’t.”
As he’s driving he keeps looking over at me. I can feel his stare even while texting my friends back.
“Is there something on my face?” I ask. “No” he replies instantly. “Then why do you keep looking at me like that?”
“You’re just really beautiful, that’s all.”
“I’m sorry but I can’t tonight” I press the speaker button and set my phone down on the table. “Why not?” he asks.
“Because I told you I’m busy. My supervisor needs me to look over a ton of case files for her” I reply. “You’re always doing extra work for that job when you don’t need to.”
“So? I’m sorry that I have to cancel date night but I have to get this done” I say. He sighs, “I’m tired of you putting so much effort into your internship and not putting as much into us.”
“Listen I just asked to push dinner to tomorrow night why are you making this bigger than it needs to be?” I flip the page of this file sighing in the process as everything is beginning to annoy me.
“This isn’t the first time you’ve done that.” A bigger sigh leaves my mouth, “well like I said I’m sorry but what do you want me to do about it? It’s work.”
“You know what? Bye.”
zabdiel: … hey
sent 10:01 am
read 10:02 am
zabdiel: please answer me
sent 10:02 am
read: 10:02 am
zabdiel: please
you: what do you want?
zabdiel: I’m sorry. So so so sorry. I shouldn’t have taken out my frustrations from work out on you. I understand your internship is important to you.
you: keep going
zabdiel: let me make it up to you
you: dinner at my favorite restaurant?
zabdiel: anything
you: hmm then that new cartoon movie that just came out?
zabdiel: we can go see it ten times if you want
you: we only need to see it once
zabdiel: then you’ll forgive me?
you: one more condition

deja vu (joel pimentel one shot)
Tumblr media
pairing: joel pimentel x oc
rating: mature
summary: childhood friends reunite because of a toolbox.
It had been 2 years since high school graduation. Meaning it had been 2 years since I’ve been home. I’ve avoided coming back to this town for breaks by agreeing to work at the grocery store a few minutes away from campus. It’s not that I didn’t miss my family… I did. It’s just the painful memories of how awkward high school was that still haunts me.
“Honey it’s been so long!” my mother runs from the front door to my car. “I know I missed you so much” I whisper as we hug each other. Hot tears fall onto my shoulder making my white t-shirt stick to my skin. “Come on come inside” she says, wiping under her eyes. “Your father and sister are waiting for you.”
As I walk inside the house I used to see every day for years my hands begin to shake. I didn’t realize just how nervous I was to see my family again. Video calls are one thing, but seeing them in person after 2 whole years is something else.
“Chrystal mija” my father says immediately. His arms wrap around me and pull me into his chest. My younger sister who isn’t so young anymore hugs be from behind. “I missed you” she mumbles. My mom eventually joins the hug and we stay like this for a few minutes until my sister complains about being hungry.
“Let’s go to the mall later” my sister says, pouring more rice onto her plate. “Didn’t you tell me your car broke down? I’m too tired to drive sis” I reply. Her eyes roll at that, “it’s fixed.”
The fork that’s about to enter my mouth is frozen in place, “how’d you afford that?”
My mother clears her throat, “let’s eat, okay?” I take a bite of avocado before asking again, “you selling drugs or something?”
“No you idiot! Joel fixed my car for me” she says. My body stiffens at the name. “H-he did?”
She nods, “he does a lot for us. When dad’s too tired to mow the lawn he comes over and helps. Last week  he went to the grocery store for mom.”
I nod slowly trying to process the information. Joel had been a.. friend? There was more of an unspoken connection between us. When we were very young we’d play together all the time at the park but when we got to high school we barely spoke excpet for the occasional group project and greeting in the hall.
“Which reminds me he left his toolbox here. I was going to return it before I went to school in the morning but since you’re here” my sister trails off with a huge smile on her face.
I groan, “fine I’ll do it.”
My hand hesitantly place two knocks on the door. “Coming!” he yells.
I mentally curse my hands for sweating and my heart for beating faster.
“Welcome you’re just in- oh” he stops when he finally looks up. “You um you left this at my house” I say, holding up his tool box.
His wide eyes never leave mine, “right.. thanks. When did you get back?” I wait for him to take the box out of my hand. When his fingertips graze mine I feel my cheeks warm at the contact.
“I got back yesterday. I’ll g-go sorry I wasn’t who you were expecting” I let out a nervous laugh. “No stay!” he exclaims.
My head tilts to the side in confusion. “I mean .. I didn’t know you would be back today or else I would’ve invited you. I’m having a small reunion with some of my friends who got back from school a few days ago. You’re welcome to stay” he says.
“I didn’t bring anything” is all I say. He smiles, “so you’ll stay?”
I nod, “ye-yeah. I’ll order pizza or something I feel bad not bringing anything.” His other arm free from the toolbox wraps around my upper arm, bringing me into his apartment.
“Don’t worry about it. We have more than enough.”
I follow his pull to his living room where six other familiar faces look up at me from their seats. “Chrystal is that you?”
My eyes follow the voice finding a close friend of mine. “Ally, hey!”
She squeals while running over to me. “It’s been so long! How are you? How’s college?”
I cringe at the mention of school. “Girl I understand I’ve been super stressed too” she says. Joel returns from whichever room he went to and claps, “we’re still waiting on Justin but we can start playing a game or something.”
“How about we dance” Ally gushes while throwing her hands in the air. “It’s only six of us won’t that be awkward?” Joel asks.
“Not if you make it. Jennie connect your phone!” Ally turns away from me and skips over to her friend. joel and I make eye contact before I get too overwhelmed and run over to Ally.
“Why does Lisa keep staring at you?” Ally says through heavy breathing. We’re standing in the corner of the room swaying back and forth to the beat. I don’t think this Justin guy is coming because we’ve been dancing for over an hour.
“Who?” I ask genuinely unaware of who she was talking about. “Right you’ve missed a few things while being gone for TWO years” she replies. “Lisa works with Joel at the mall” she adds.
“Oh I mean- I don’t know why she would stare at me? I haven’t formally met her” I reply. “Maybe she is jealous.”
Jealous?
“Why would she be? I’m nothing special” I laugh. “Oh shut up!” she replies. We both burst out in laughter together earning the stares of the rest of the group.
I notice Joel smiling at us, so I wave at him which only makes him smile wider.
“That is why she would be jealous” Ally whispers. “That was friends being friends though?” I ask with a questioning tone.
“Sure” she says.
Having enough of this, I walk over to Joel and Austin. I remember Austin being on the track team. He was a star athlete. Joel’s so shy I still wonder how they even became friends.
“Hey there party girl!” Austin says. “You two” I point at them both, “are just boring.” They both laugh. “You’re having fun then?” Joel asks. I nod, “yes joey.”
His jaw goes slack at his nickname. “You remember that?” I can’t stop the smile that spreads across my face, “we were close friends years ago of course I do.”
As I stare into his eyes all the feelings I’ve repressed come crashing back. Our days in the park, the glances during class, working in the library for projects, staring at him from outside my window as he helped my mom bring in the groceries.
I like him. I like Joel.
“Party girl you still in there?” I hear. I snap out of my trance and let my eyes fall to the floor, “s-sorry.”
My stomach whirls triggering my gag reflex. “Where’s the bathroom?” I ask rubbing my stomach.
“First door on your right. Are you okay?”
-
“No I’m not okay” I say. My sister groans, “you’re so dramatic! Fine take it and leave me alone! I have to finish getting ready.”
I dance in excitement as I grab the silver necklace from her jewelry box. I barged in here in a fit because I was missing an essential piece to my outfit. I forgot my favorite necklace at school somehow, which would’ve looked perfect with my current outfit.
Now I’m ready to meet my friends for dinner later. The house would soon be quiet as my sister was going to the mall with her friends and my parents went to the town meeting.
The doorbell rings sounding louder than usual in the quiet.
“Can you get that?” my sister yells from her room.
I hum along to the song I had just been listening to as I turn the door knob.
“Hi”
My eyes shut in embarrassment, “did you hear that?” The sound of laughter fills my ears. “We both did. You’re a good singer Chrystal.”
I smile at the younger boy, “hey Gabe how are you? Is it just you two going to the mall?”
He shakes his head, “nope. We’re meeting our friend Mandy there. My brother drove me here since you know.. I can’t drive yet.”
I laugh, “one more year bud. Come in guys.” I hold the door open wider for them to come in.
Joel stands next to me while his younger brother goes to most likely rush my sister. “You look beautiful” he says. My cheeks take no time to heat up. “Thank you” I pull him in for a hug. “I’m meeting friends for dinner later. Want to keep my company until then?”
He nods. “I would lo-“
Two pairs of footsteps running down the stairs interrupts him. “We’ll be back later. I’ll take Gabe home” my sister says.
“Thank you. Be careful if you need anything call me” Joel says making my heart flutter.
“Bye!”
Tension fills the air once the front door slams shut. “Are you feeling better?”
His sudden speech makes me jump. He laughs softly, “sorry didn’t mean to scare you.”
I finally look up at him. “I’m feeling a lot better now. I probably just danced too much at the party.”
“Well I’m glad my dancing queen is doing better” he says. The new nickname causes my heart to skip a beat. My stomach begins whirling, but not because I’m sick this time.
“Sit” I manage to stay.
I take a seat next to him on the couch leaving enough distance for me to sit with one knee resting against the cushion.
“What have you been up to?” I ask. “I balance work and school. Haven’t really been doing much else” he replies. “Besides helping my family out.”
He gulps. “Y-yeah I help out sometimes. Your parents are good people.” I smile, “they are. How about the singing thing? Still doing that?’
My eyes scan his face taking in his appearance and mannerisms. “Not really. I haven’t done much singing since high school” he replies with a sad tone. “You should post covers! You have the perfect face and voice to make it” I say.
A wide smile spreads across his face, “perfect face huh.” I shove his arm playfully. ‘You know you’re gorgeous no need to be so modest.”
“Thank you” he bites his lip, “really. Your words mean a lot to me.”
“Why is that?” I ask quickly. He looks taken aback, his eyes wide, his jaw slack. “You’re my friend.”
In a few weeks I’ll be back at school. That means I can run successfully avoid him if my next statement fails or I can benefit for two whole weeks if he responds positively. So, why not?
“Am I just your friend?” I ask. “Wha-what do you me-“
“You know what I’m asking you Joel” I interrupt. “You’re going back to school Chrys” he replies. “So? I’m a few hours away.. we both have phones.”
“Are you serious about this? You can’t play about something like this. I’ve felt this way since high school” he says. I nod, “me too it just took me longer to realize. I’m sorry.”
“Then there’s only one thing left to do I guess” he says. I move closer to him as he does the same. “Yeah and what’s that?” I ask.
His hand brushes the hair out of my face. The same hand cups my cheeks as his face moves closer to mine. My thoughts become hazy as the only thing I can manage to think of is him.
Joel Joel Joel
His name repeating in my mind like a mantra. I lean in connecting our lips because he was taking too long for my liking.
Our lips move together hastily, his hands push me back on the couch, and my hands make their way to grip his hair.
“Dinner” he mumbles against my lips. “Don’t care” I reply. He moans against my mouth when my legs wrap around his waist, pulling him closer to my body.
-
“I don’t care! You owe me all the burgers and milkshakes I can eat before you leave me again” Ally sighs into the phone. “Anything you want. On me!”
She laughs, “of course it will be after you ditched me. Not that I can blame you. How was it?”
If she were in front of me her eyebrows would be wiggling right now. “I’m not answering that I have to go.”
She whines, “I’m not asking you to go into detail!”
“Fine. It was perfect- he was perfect. Now I have to go he’ll be here any minute” I reply. She giggles, “was he big?”
“Bye!” I exclaim. “Bye have fun on your date!”
At the same time I click the end call button the doorbell rings.
“Coming!” I yell.
I open the door and smile. He holds a bouquet of roses for me to take, “this is for you.”
“I’m getting a weird sense of deja vu” I say.
“You know what? I am too. I’m glad I left my toolbox here” he replies.
I take the bouquet from his hands, “yeah me too.”

summary: Elizabeth and Joel were set to be married since a very young age. After an unfortunate occurrence, Elizabeth must seek sanction in Joel’s kingdom. They haven’t seen each other in years and must now figure out how to love one another as they will rule together one day.
part 6
Roses are my favorite flower. As I walk along the pebble path pressed atop a field of green grass, I run my fingers through the rose bushes. My fingertips dance happily along the soft petals, my nose selfishly sniffing the sweet scent. This was my personal garden at home.
That is how I know I am dreaming. I am back at home where nothing had gone wrong. I can see my guards in the distance calling me back inside the castle because my parents were requesting my presence.
Despite the voice inside my head telling me to run farther into the garden I walk towards them.
As the concept of time is usually nonexistent in dreams, I reach my guards in an instant. One reaches their hand out for mine and grips it harshly. It felt all too real. Their calloused fingertips press into my skin whilst their nails also carve small crescent moons along my hand.
When the feeling of something cold and sharp along my neck becomes apparent, my eyes shoot open. I come face to face with a girl, most likely a commoner by her dress, who smirks down at me.
“You can’t marry him if you’re dead” she says, pressing a knife more into the skin covering my neck. I quickly recognize her as the girl who was in bed with the prince the night of the banquet.
“Y-y-you” I choke out. She lightens the press of the knife against my neck, “what are your last words?”
“You can never have him” I say with a hoarse voice that developed through the night. Her smug expression drops and is quickly replaced with anger. In the time of her emotional shift I push both of my palms into her stomach. She groans and moves back slightly but the threat of her weapon is still evident.
“You’re not getting out of this alive” she says as she catches her breath. I reach my hand out as much as I could while being pushed further into my bed. I am able to grasp her hold on the knife. I hastily twist her hand and move my hand higher up the handle of the knife. Using all my strength, I am able to pull the knife out of her grasp.
Wanting to rid of the weapon, I throw it across the room. Since she was able to get into my room I am guessing my guards have been distracted.
She charges for me with both of her hands going for my neck. I avoid her my throwing my body off the bed. I feel her weight on my back and proceed to have my face smashed into the floor. Her grip is tight in my hair as she lifts and pushes my face back down onto the cold hard floor.
She lifts my head once again, “he was mine first.”
“No he wasn-“
When my cheek reunites with the cold surface I place my palms flat against the floor and push back. She is thrown off my back and onto the floor next to me. While she is groaning and holding onto the back of her head, I stand up on my feet and run. I grab the knife that is by the door before running towards the familiar room.
Joel’s guards hold their hands up for me to stop, but I push past them as best as I can. “I know he’s sleeping but I need to see him!”
They sigh and let me pass. I push the door and run straight to his bed.
“What’s going on?” he asks in a groggy voice. As he rubs his eyes I throw the knife on the floor and throw myself on him.
“She-she tried to kill me” I cry.
He immediately sits up, visibly more awake. “Who? What happened to you?”
I cry into his chest as he rubs soothingly on my back. “T-that girl you were with. She broke into my room” I sob.
He lightly pushes my shoulders off his chest to look me in the eyes, “did she get away? Are you okay?”
I nod, “I got out as fast I could. She’s probably gone by now.”
“I’ll be right back. I need to alert my parents. You stay here you’ll be safe I promise.”
I nod and reach for a pillow to cuddle. “Please hurry back I-I’m scared. I- my parents Joel the-they wen’t through this and I-“
He shushes me with a soft kiss on my forehead. “I’m so sorry princess. I need to go now so I can get justice for you okay? We will talk in a bit.”
“Okay sorry, sorry.”
I stand next to Joel, my arm linked with his.
“This traitor must and will be found. She dares threaten the future queen and disrespects my rule with such a cruel attempt of treason. The wedding will unfortunately be pushed back a day. I will make sure you are all accommodated because you are guests of my court and will be treated as such. Please let us come together and protect the monarchy” the king delivers his speech to the current audience in the throne room.
“Long live the king!” the crowd shouts. “Long live the queen!”
Joel squeezes my hand. I look at him with a soft smile, “I’m alright.”
“Sir I would like to offer my men for the hunt for the traitor.” “Me too sire, my men are ready for your command.”
Joel begins walking away with me following behind him. When we are outside in the palace garden I let out a deep breath.
“That was tense” he says. I nod, “part of me wants to save her. Help her, you know?”
He bites his lip as he avoids eye contact with me. “What is it? What’s wrong?’
“Nothing. I’m just so sorry this is my fault.”
I shake my head profusely, “no it’s not. The part of me that wants to save her is because of you. I know you cared for each other so in some twisted way I understand her anger towards me.”
“She may be anger but she had no right whatsoever to do that to you!” he shouts. I flinch at his outburst, still burdened with anxiety after the trauma of last night.
“Sorry” he rushes out quickly in a much softer voice. “It’s okay my love.”
The smile on his face warms my heart. “You are so strong.”
“I’m not. Inside I’m an anxious mess” I laugh.
“Here I have something to show you.” I take his hand and follow him deeper into the garden.
“I was going to save this for a wedding gift but since our wedding has been postponed and given what happened…”
I say nothing as we continue our walk.
We reach an open space with three circles of dirt indicating something had been recently plotted. “I remember you telling me about your love of roses when we were younger, so I had three rose bushes planted for you.”
I immediately bursts into tears.
“Did I do something wrong? Do you not like roses anymore? I’m sorry!” Joel gushes at my outcry.
“No” is all I can manage.
“Are those happy tears?”
I nod.
He sighs, “thank goodness.” He engulfs me in a tight hug.
“I..”
I wanted to tell him I love him. I wanted to tell him so badly, but I also needed to be sure. I need to be sure of what I’m feeling.
Instead of verbally stating my inner thoughts, I press my lips onto his. The warmth from my heart flows up to my lips and transfers to his.
“Me too” he mumbles.
“Sorry to interrupt majesties but there’s been an update on the girl.”

I happily stare at the perfectly toasted bread that just popped out of the toaster. The only thing I seemed to want this morning being bread and jam, but then again that’s what I crave almost every morning. Zabdiel stares at the bread in disgust, “that’s seriously what you’re going to eat for breakfast?”
I ignore his hostility by scooping a spoonful of jam and spreading it evenly. Despite the silent treatment he receives, Zabdiel keeps staring at me with confused eyes. “Why do you think I spent my morning at the grocery store instead of watching the sun rise at the beach?”
“I don’t know maybe you just really like grocery stores” he replies. I playfully swing the butter knife in his direction to which he holds his hands up in surrender. “If you need me I’ll be eating a real breakfast on the patio” he says.
I hum in response.
With so many people in one beach house it’s hard to come by moments of silence. This moment of silence lasts a few seconds before Ashley’s voice reaches my ears, “you and Joel seemed comfy last night.”
I begin to answer her but stop once I realized my words were muffled by the food in my mouth. “Sorry” I laugh, “well we’re .. good? Yeah we’re just good.”
“Young love” she sighs. I burst out in laughter while she stares with a small smile on her face. “Not there yet” I reply. “Mhm yet you switched rooms with Lola so you two could share one of the bigger rooms” she says.
“I did what?” I ask. It was more of a rhetorical question because I know I slept in the same room that I had been sleeping in. I assumed Joel had done the same.
“You don’t have to pretend with me girl. I saw Joel coming out of Lola’s old room this morning!”
I drop the bread immediately on the bread and charge for her room. Despite being consumed with rage I stop myself from busting the door down.
“Idiota”
I turn around and practically run to the patio hoping Zabdiel would still be there.
“Nice of you to join me.”
“Help” is all I can manage to say. “What mess did you manage to get yourself in?”
“I did nothing! W-well I did kind of. Joel and I agreed we aren’t dating b-but I didn’t expect him to sleep in Lola’s room the same night after we established that!”
Zabdiel scrunches his eyebrows, “well if you aren’t dating why are you upset?”
“We aren’t dating but h-he told me he likes me and I told him I like him too and I just I don’t k-“
Zabdiel places his hand on top of mine, “I get it. That makes more sense. You guys are sort of in limbo.”
I nod.
“I want to say you shouldn’t be upset but I can understand why you are” he says.
I nod again.
“Talk to him. Ask what happened and explain what you’re feeling.”
I shake my head, “I’ll sound crazy.” He sighs, “well there’s this other option.. so you choose. Do you want to be crazy or immature?”
“Uh.. immature?”
He hums, “first you ask him to tell you exactly what happened. If he did more than just sleep in the same bed as her and you want to make him jealous our signal will be…”
He stares off into the distance in deep thought. “I’ll kiss you.”
His neck whips around so his eyes are on me again. “..on the cheek.”
I smile cheekily at him as I get up in my seat and walk back into the beach house.
“We got back so late so I was tired and she just kept-“
I hold my hand up to silence him, “no don’t worry about it dude.”
“Dude? That’s what you’re calling me now?” Joel asks. “Well I have no reason to call you anything else.”
My eyes scan the room for Zabdiel. He’s sitting on the couch looking at his phone while we wait for our Ubers to arrive.
“Gotta go” I say. I place my hands on the chair and use them to push myself up. “Hey.”
Zabdiel looks up from his phone with a smile on his face, “hey.”
I sit next to him and snuggle up to his side. Straining my neck, I place a soft kiss on his cheek. He laughs loudly catching the attention of those in the living room space, “thanks for the kiss baby girl.”

part 5
The castle was full of guests who came for the wedding. My wedding.
Queen Anne was currently showing me around the banquet hall, “I think the flowers would look best there.” My eyes follow her hand to an empty space adjacent to the table that would hold a plethora of hors d'oeuvres.
I simply nod opting for a, “mhm” in response. She stops in her tracks letting out a breathe I did not know she was holding in. “Listen dear I’ve always liked you. Politics are politics you must know that” she says.
I fight the urge to roll my eyes, “I do now your majesty.” The formality was pettiness on my part, rolling off of my tongue with pure bitterness.
“There you are!”
Thank goodness. “Please tell me you are here to ask for my help” I whisper. Joel laughs, “I am actually.”
“My dearest son are you here to help with planning?” Queen Anne asks, rushing over to his side. “Sorry mother but I am not. I’m here because I need Eli” he replies.
“Fine leave it all to me.”
With that Joel grabs ahold of my hand and rushes out of the banquet hall. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong princess.”
Not expecting a further explanation, I relax and let him pull me off to wherever it is we are going.
My eyebrows furrow in confusion when I notice we are headed for his room. “How is it that you get lost in a castle you grew up in?”
Joel turns his head just enough to see me and show the smirk on his face, “I’m not lost honey.”
Once inside his room I choose to stay near the door while he plops down on the small couch. “Even though I appreciate not being dragged around by your mother I think I could’ve been more useful there.”
He ignores my statement by patting the space next to him. “Wanted to spend time with you” he mumbles.
I sigh. I sigh because he could get me to do almost anything he wanted. I push my shoulders back and hold my head high as I walk over to the couch, sitting on the complete opposite end.
“We’re getting married tomorrow why are you being so shy?” he asks while scooting over. If it weren’t for the arm rest I would’ve scooted over right onto the floor if I could.
Warmth radiates off his body which comforts my anxious soul. “I don’t know!” I yell. “Is that what you brought me here for? Because we are to bed wed you will make me be intimate with you” I continue with an accusatory tone.
He visibly seems taken aback by my outburst. He scoots over towards his original position. “That’s not it at all. i’m not here to make you do anything” he replies, his voice sounding small in the moment. “I just want us to be comfortable around each other” he finishes.
We sit in silence surely because neither of us knows what to say.
“You confuse me.”
My head snaps toward him. “You- you let me kiss you and you helped me with Aurora. You even told me I was someone you could fall for. Why are your emotions so clear one day and the next it’s like you feel nothing.”
My stomach begins to swirl with feelings of guilt and uncertainty.
“I’m sorry for that… I really am.” He turns around in his seat, placing one knee on the couch. “Can you not give me a better explanation?”
“I’m scared okay? I sometimes wake up in the morning wishing I had woken up as someone else. We are very lucky to have the privilege that we do, but I did not ask for all this. I wish my parents were not killed for reasons solely tied to their power and authority. They were killed because of the life they were too born into without being asked. I do like you Joel, I do. I wish you were just a boy and I was just a girl. I wish we weren’t being wed just because the king finally found me useful. I- I wish we were getting married because it was of our doing. We have no control over our lives but I guess that is the price for having control over the lives of many.”
Hot tears drip down onto my hands. “You know I can understand what you are feeling more than anyone else. I try to act as composed as possible but I’m sure you can tell I fight battles of my own everyday. I constantly lose the battles in my head over what I want to do and what I am required to do as the prince. We may not have control over being married but we can control whether we turn to each other. You told me once that you’d come to me with future problems. I don’t want those to only be political problems. Any strife within your heart please feel free to share it with me. If I can bare a least a fraction of the burden you feel in order to make you feel better then I have done something worthy” Joel reaches out to place his hand over mine.
I look up at him through my tears and smile, “you have already done that by listening to me now. Thank you.”
He stays with me until my sobs finally die down. His soothing touch against my hand helps calm me down.
“Don’t let your emotions build up Eli. It’s not fun when you snap at me” he says. “Don’t expect that to be the last time you tell me that.”
His laugh continues to lift the weight off my chest, “I know and that’s okay. I’m here for you. I’m here to grow with you.”
I compose myself before scooting over closer to him. I move until my hand rests on his elevated knee. Looking into his eyes, I notice they are free of any battles in this one moment. “You seem really relaxed right now” I say.
He nods slowly, “I know they say the eyes are the window to the soul but I didn’t know mines were so telling.”
As I laugh I unconsciously grip his knee tighter, “I can always tell when you’re at war with yourself. But right now..” I back into his eyes, “right now I see just a boy.”
A small quickly grows on his face, “and I see just a girl.”
Both of us move closer until we meet each other halfway. Our noses graze one another occasionally while my hands trail up his arms. When they reach his shoulders I let them wrap over the curve of his body.
Throughout this time Joel stays still anticipating my next move. Using my grip on his shoulders, I pull myself onto his lap. The long pink dress covering my body bunches at my waist.
My hands have a mind of their own as one grazes over the material of Joel’s shirt until it reaches his chest. With a soft push Joel’s back collides with the couch.
“I- I want…”
My eyes look away from his eyes to focus on his lips. “We don’t hav-“
His words are captured by my mouth as our lips move together. “I want to” I mutter between kisses.
“Forget about anyone before me” I mumble against his skin as my lips trail from his jaw to his neck. “Forget about your inner struggles, forget everything and be here with me.”
His hands roughly grab my neck and pull my face up to his. For once the only battle we face is that of our lungs fighting for air as we melt into each other.

summary: Elizabeth and Joel were set to be married since a very young age. After an unfortunate occurrence, Elizabeth must seek sanction in Joel’s kingdom. They haven’t seen each other in years and must now figure out how to love one another as they will rule together one day.
part 4
It is normal to be bombarded with stares as I walk through the castle, but these stares are different. I am being looked at as if I have something be ashamed of.
“Well what is wrong?” I ask a passing servant. “I-I’m sorry your grace.” I wait for them to continue but nothing else is said. “You are sorry for staring?” I ask. The girl shakes her head and runs off.
“Elizabeth!” I turn around following the voice and smile at my lady Grier. “Look at you back on your feet already.”
“All thanks to you. Despite all that has happened I am thankful to be going back home soon” she responds. My head tilts in confusion, “why would we be going home so soon?”
The gleeful expression on her face falls, “you haven’t heard have you?” I shake my head, “tell me this instant.”
“I really should not be the one to tell you this. You need to find the prince your highness.” My eyes shut slowly as I try to hold on to my patience, “I did not ask for the prince I asked you to tell me. I command you.”
“W-well the king welcomed a wealthy noble girl and her father into the castle today. There’s talk about ending your engagement with Joel and him to be wed to her.”
“I see. I am sorry about my temper, forgive me. I’ve been on edge lately.” That is all I need to hear.
The throne room seems to be the setting for all my outbursts. “This is outrageous! I won’t have it” I exclaim making my entrance.
“You are quite bold for someone who is about to not have any real title here” the king responds. “The alliance between our nations was forged for a reason!”
He hums, “that is true yes. Joel’s new wife to be will be of assistance as well.” My eyes scan the room for the woman of the hour. She’s standing sheepishly behind her father. Joel is no where to be seen.
“And how will you do that?” I ask directing my gaze and words at her. “My daughter will provide a substantial dowery that rivals yours. The money to the crown can be used for weaponry and men. Laika will be strong enough on its own to fight any aggression from Gale” the nobleman answers.
“What does Joel think of all this?” I ask. “He is loyal to me and will do as I say” the king replies.
Not being able to hear anymore of this treachery, I make my exit and head for my room. “Don’t scream” a voice whispers in my ear as I am dragged into a secluded room.
“Who the hell ar-“
Oh. “It is you” I say breathlessly. “Eli please help me. I do not wish to marry her.”
His hands intertwine with mine and grip tightly. “What is so different between the arrangement we have and what you will have with her? You have to marry her if that is what your father wants. I’ve angered him and he wants me gone.”
For the first time in my life I see Joel cry. After the first tear drop falls to his cheek, the rest follow more violently. “It is not fair!” he sobs.
Sighing, I pull him towards my body and engulf him in a hug. “I cannot promise anything but I will try to help you. I will find out anything I can use to save you from this” I say as I rub his back. “You wouldn’t be saving just me you’d be saving us” he says.
My heart aches at this words. I have not yet fallen in love with him but I have grown very fond of him. I hold my dear friend very close to my heart. “I must go then. I must go and begin my quest if I am to protect you.”
As he nods his head his soft curls tickle my neck. “I will find you by the end of the day. You need to go too. Your father will be looking for you.”
Allie shuts the door to my room behind her. “Did you find anything?” I ask. She nods, “one of the servants in the kitchen used to live in the village where Lord Keith owns some land. They told me the Lady Aurora used to sneak around with a young farmer.”
“If she used to sneak around with another she might not be able to marry Joel. We can use this to help him” I say. “There is more my queen. The rumors went beyond her being defiled, she is said to be with child” Allie says.
My eyes widen in shock, “that would explain why they traveled all the way here quickly trying to seek a marriage to her. If they were smart they would’ve found another young noble to wed her. Why would they choose the future king of Laika?”
“My guess is she would’ve tricked Joel into thinking the child was his and she would be secured in her power by haven produced an heir to the throne” Allie replies.
That all sounds correct, but how could we prove this? “Thank you for your work. Let me be I need to figure out a plan.”
“Your grace you are asking me to betray the crown. I cannot do that” the servant, Michael, says. “I am asking you to help the future king. I mean it when I say he will be very grateful for your help if you do this. I can promise you land will be rewarded to you” I reply.
Michael says nothing in response. “I know you are frightened but fear not. I will protect you. If all else fails I can promise you safe passage to my kingdom where you will be given a title at court” I add trying everything in my power to convince the young man.
He looks me in the eye and nods. “I will do this for you and for my future king.”
I smile widely, “good. I have set up a carriage that is already ready by the gates. You are to return to your old village and come back to court with the rumored father of Aurora’s child. The guards that will accompany you can be trusted. Now go quickly we haven’t got much time.”
“Prince Joel” my guards announce. “Enter” I yell loudly. Joel walks into my room looking much happier than he did earlier.
“I’m guessing you found a way being that you called me here” he says. “If everything goes well you will not have to wed Aurora” I reply. “Gosh” he says looking deeply into my eyes.
“What? What is it?’ I ask becoming self conscious. “You are amazing” he replies. “It hasn’t worked yet so don’t start praising me just yet.”
“You don’t see how amazing you are which saddens me deeply. You are a fierce and passionate woman who I cannot believe will be by my side for the rest of my life. I don’t know what I did to deserve you or to deserve your help when I haven’t exactly been the best to you.”
His praise causes an eruption of butterflies in my stomach. Had he not been born as the future king he surely would’ve been born a famous poet.
“Tomorrow morning we will see if I am to be the woman by your side.”
At sunrise I sneak out of my chambers and discretely walk down to the pond near the forest. If Michael is to come back alive he should be returning to this very point at any moment.
My ears pick up on the sound of horses growing louder as the animals draw closer to the castle. This could be Michael or guards, so I swallow the taste of hope trying to dance happily on my tongue.
The carriage I sent Michael off in comes into view and that is all it takes for my body to leap with joy. Well run rather as I begin a light jog to meet the horses halfway.
“Halt!” I yell as I hold my hand out in front of me. “Michael.”
The door opens at normal speed but to me it seems as if everything is moving in slow motion. “I am here your highness and so is the man you wanted.”
“Y-your royal highness” the man bows. “Come, come you must come with me. You are willing to swear to your life that you were in bed with lady aurora correct?”
The man who has not yet revealed his name nods confidently. “And is true?” He nods again. “You will be a friend of Laika for bringing this to light. Michael you are free to go I will speak with you later after all this is done.”
By now people are out and about around the castle. The king should be having breakfast at this time so the banquet hall in where I head.
“Queen Elizabeth” the guards announce as I pass. “What is it now?” the king groans, clearly tired of my unannounced visits.
“I think you will find my company to be a blessing after this sir” I reply, “lady aurora” I say in greeting.
“Well go on I haven’t got all day” the king says. “These people take you as a fool your highness. They would have you grant marriage between the lady aurora and Joel knowing she was in bed with another and has become with child.”
The king drops his fork on the table, “these are very serious accusations child. You better have proof for all of this.”
I make eye contact with Aurora, “I will give you the chance to be truthful first.”
Her eyes leave my stare to that of the person standing behind me. “How dare you be so disrespectful?” her father yells, standing up from his seat.
“How dare you speak to me with that tone? I am a queen in my own right and you are nothing but a liar!” I retort.
“It’s true! It’s all true. Stop this now!” Aurora bursts into sobs. From the side of my eye I can see the servant boy from the village rushing to be at her side.
“You are to leave my castle immediately. You are no longer a friend of mine or this kingdom. Your land and title are hereby stripped from you” the king says oddly calmly. “But my lord pleas-“
“Take my mercy and leave!”
All three visitors gather themselves quickly and exit the hall. “I realize now that you will be very useful here” the king says, “you are to be married to my son next week. It is time for you both to be wed in the eyes of God.”

summary: Elizabeth and Joel were set to be married since a very young age. After an unfortunate occurrence, Elizabeth must seek sanction in Joel’s kingdom. They haven’t seen each other in years and must now figure out how to love one another as they will rule together one day.
part 3
The kindness of the king and queen had shocked me at first. Two weeks after my arrival however, I quickly realized they must be diplomatic. They cannot be mean to a guest of the court when all are watching.
Their kindness was running thin. Deep down in my heart I knew it was not going to last.
knock knock
The door opens before I can grant permission to enter. “Your grace I’m sorry but this is urgent” Gwen says, sweat dripping for her forehead. “What is it? What has happened?” I ask.
“Your ladies have arrived. They’re not in good shape.” My heart drops at the revelation. I did this to them. I left them there alone.
“Where are they now?” I ask already rushing to the door. “They’ve just pulled up at the shore your majesty.”
I hold my dress up as I run through the castle ignoring any words spoken to me. I run and run until I meet the faces of my ladies in waiting from home. “You’re here!” I exclaim.
“Y-y-yes my queen” Allie says, bowing while clutching her side. “What happened to you all? Who did this? I will have justice.”
“They were men from our kingdom, our own men who are working with the kingdom of Gale. We think they were the same men who killed your parents. You must help your aunt you have to help us K-Kedon is falling” Grier bursts into sobs after explaining.
“Hush now you’re safe here. Our kingdom will not fall not with me as it’s queen. To hell with those men and any traitor who dares threaten my crown.”
Allie and Grier have smiles on their faces but their eyes are tired and sad. “None of that now you must go rest. I will have trusted workers help you settle in.” I look around for a sign of anyone. “Guards!”
The two men passing stop in their path at my voice. “Your grace” they say. “Help my ladies to their chambers please. I would do it myself but I have business to attend to.”
“Of course your grace.” I hum, rubbing gently on Allie’s arm. “Go rest.”
Anger courses through my body most likely showing through my rough steps and cold eyes. “Your grace the king and queen are having a private meeting with the prince you cannot go in-“
“Do not tell me what I can and cannot do!” I push past the guard and enter the throne room. “What is your business here child?” the king asks. “I need your help.”
Joel walks over to me with open arms. “I heard about your ladies I’m so sorry.” I deny his hug by pushing him away from me. “My men are in need of reinforcements. I’m humbly asking for a few weapons and even fewer men to aid them in crushing the rebellion in my land” I say looking directly into the kings eyes.
“You’ll have me risk my men and lose weaponry to crush some rebellion” he replies, laughing bitterly. “This is not just some rebellion! Those rebels are working with the kingdom of Gale. If my kingdom falls how much longer do you think it will take for them to come here and damn us all to hell?”
The king stands up in his seat, “we are strong enough to take them. Do not come in here talking politics as if you understand anything.”
I scoff, “you may be right about that. I’m still learning the politics of being a ruler but I am well versed in the betrayal of court. I knew your kindness would be shown to me no longer.”
“Then leave us be we are attending private matters. It’d be best for you to go to the chapel and pray for your people” the king says, dismissing my presence. “I could do that” I being.
“Eli please” Joel whispers. I hold my hand up to silence him, “but I will not. Before I came here I sent out two riders who are far beyond the woods by now. You think I am a fool? That I do not know what these private matters are about? You are discussing the famine plaguing the villages while we all sit here comfortably with more than enough grain to share. I explained this in letters that will reach the villages if I do not send word to my men. They will start their own rebellion and may even join Gale’s mission of destroying us all.”
The queen takes a stand as well, “you would defy the king and queen of Laika? After all we have done for you?”
“You deny me the help I need to save my kingdom when my engagement to Joel, our alliance, promised just that. The alliance was written up to strengthen both of us against our common enemy but now I am not sure if that enemy has become you. Your kingdom will not suffer by giving me a group of five soldiers and a few weapons. Now tell me, what will you do?” bitterness and anger drips with every word making me, for a second, not even recognize myself.
“I will have your head for this” the king says. “Father!” Joel yells. “That will only start uproar from my loyal subjects and you know that you sat in the middle between Kedon and Gale you will be pressured by violence from both sides. That aggression may be for different reasons but it will tear you apart. So I ask you AGAIN, what are you going to do?”
The king and I are in a stare down. Two royals with realms to think of standing head to head in this unexpected battle. “I do not want to make an enemy out of you but I’d watch your tone with me in the future. Joel will accompany you to gather the men and weapons you need” the king says finally.
“We were discussing something though, what of that?” Joel asks. “You can join our discussions again when you get your fiancé under control” with that the king alerts the guards and dismisses us from the throne room for good.
“What was that?” Joel asks when we get far away enough. “That was me looking out for my people. I will always put them first as you should put your people first. I will not ask you to choose between them and I so please do not ask me to explain myself this time” I reply. “You were about to start chaos! You cannot do that Eli” he stops walking and places a hand on my shoulder.
“We do not have time for this right now. We must deploy men immediately” I shake his hand off my shoulder. “We are finishing this talk later.”
Joel stares at me intently. He has not said a word since we finished our task and went back to his room to talk. “Are you-“
“Don’t talk” he interrupts. Sometimes I wonder if he knows that his eyes tell everything he is feeling. He is conflicted about my actions. I think a part of him understands but he is mostly angered about the way in which I spoke to his parents, to the king and queen of his beloved home.
“Please let me explain” I say quickly to be sure he does not stop me. When the only answer I get is silence I take it as my cue to speak. “I apologize for how I spoke. I apologize for endangering your people. I was angry, lost, and needed to take action immediately. That is the only plan I could come up with in such short notice.”
“Why didn’t you ask for me first? Instead of writing those letters instead of all of it.”
I take a step toward him carefully. He does not flinch or move away from me so I gently place a palm against his cheek. “I had to act quickly. I can tell your heart is good and you would’ve tried to reason with your father as I briefly tried to. He is a king and does not listen to anyone other than God. This was the only way for me to get through to him.”
“And you? You are a queen. Do you listen to anyone? I am to be a king does that mean I do not have to listen to others?” his tone grows harsher with every word. “If that is the type of king you want to be then yes, go ahead and do that. I will listen to you now and come to you first with any future problems I may have because that is the kind of queen I want to be. Who I was in that moment cannot and will not define me. Please forgive me if you can.”
He sighs, “I can understand why you did what you did. I will forgive you given time.” He places his hand over mine and rubs his thumb against my skin. “Plus you look hot when you’re thirsty for justice.”
“How can you say things like that in such a moment?” I laugh. I cannot help but laugh at his words. “I can’t help it I am a man.” I shake my head, “nonsense. When you’re sparring and ordering the guards around I think you look heavenly. I have those feelings about you too.”
“Well then I guess I have less self control than you do” he replies. “Are we okay?” I ask. In response he connects our lips. All the emotions of the day are poured into the kiss.
“We are” he replies.

part 2
Shortly after my arrival a knock on my door shocked me. I had only been here a few hours and did not have any real friends yet. Who would be visiting me?
“You may enter” I spoke loudly. The guards standing in front of my door open it widely for two servant girls to walk in. “Pardon our unexpected entrance your grace but your things just arrived here. Where would you like us to put them?” one of them asks.
I smile warmly at the two girls, “what are your names?” They gulp at my question, “I am Gwen my lady” one says, “and I am Lola your grace.”
“You may leave the trunks by the window. I will go through them later” I say while pointing toward he exact spot. Before they leave Gwen stops by the door, “is there anything you would like?” I shake my head, “I am quite already.”
Just like that I am left in silence again. The feast would be starting soon yet I am still unprepared. My mother would have me call servants in to help me, but I decide against it. I’m perfectly capable of dressing myself. My heart aches at the thought of my mother. We did not have a close relationship but she was still my mother. She was still my queen.
I shake the thoughts from my head to avoid a gloomy glow at the feast that was being thrown in my honor. Rummaging through my belongings, I look for the purple dress with my the symbol of my royal seal embroidered on the chest area. “Ah there you are” I say out loud, gripping the material.
After dressing quickly I find myself walking towards the only familiar room in this castle.
knock knock
I wait to be welcomed into the room but that welcome never comes. “Is the prince in his chambers?” I ask the two guards standing on both sides of the door. “Yes your grace” they reply at the same time.
I knock harder and more frequent this time. Still there is no answer. I lean my head against the door trying to hear any movement. Maybe he had fallen asleep. That is what I thought until I heard movement. I heard gasps and groans.
“He sounds like he is in trouble why aren’t you helping him?” I ask suddenly overwhelmed with alarm. The guards stand in silence with cold expressions. I scoff, “I asked a question.” Receiving no answer, I become fed up and push the doors open myself.
The guards rush into the room before me, “Queen Elizabeth sir.” A high pitched squeal catches me off guard. I follow the guards path into the room and freeze up at the sight. He was with another.
“What are you doing here?” Joel asked, shielding the naked girl with the blanket. “I-I wasn’t sure where the ballroom was so I came here. Your room is the only place I remembered” I reply.
He sighs and rubs the space between his eyebrows. “Next time don’t just barge in here. Do you understand?” he asks, the tone of his voice undistinguishable. ‘Well next time don’t have a random girl in your bed” I retort harshly before retreating from his chambers. I cannot bear the sight any longer.
He could have another in his bed without being shamed. If I were to do the same I’d be ruined. It is not fair. He does not have to be loyal to me yet I must be to him. Respect and loyalty should be mutual.
A passing servant stops to bow to me. “Excuse me could you point in the direction of the ballroom? Has the feast began?” I ask them. The boy who was clearly younger than me nodded, “of course your grace. The feast has already begun but do not worry the food has not been served. At the end of the hall make a right and you will see the doors wide open to the banquet hall.”
A hum in response is all I can manage with the turmoil going on in the head and in my heart. As I stand at the open doors to the hall all fall silent. Everyone rises and cheers for me. I never had a feast held in my honor, so all this attention made me feel uneasy. I was used to attention of course I had to be because of my status, but that does not mean I am always okay with it.
I smile at those I pass on my way to my seat. “Have you seen my son?” the king asks when I find my seat near the head of the table. I nod, “yes he is busy at the moment.”
The king motions a servant over and whispers something in their ear. Surely he told them to get his son and bring him to the festivities.
“Well aren’t you beautiful. Take my hand, please.” I turn to my left and look up at the man standing next to me. I follow his request and place my hand gently on top of his palm. With that he places a soft kiss on my skin. “It’s a shame your fiancé left you here all alone. With a beautiful woman like you.. a beautiful queen like you I’d never let you out of my sight” the unfamiliar man says.
Astonished at the way he spoke about the prince when the king is so near, I pull my hand back quickly. “Who might you be?” I ask. “I am Lord Julian. A nobleman your highness” he replies. “Lord Julian so nice of you to join us!”
The presence of my fiancé clearly makes Julian uncomfortable. Now that he is here he cannot talk as freely nor as boldly as he once was. “It is an honor to be here” Julian responds, bowing to his prince. “What was it you were saying about my beautiful wife to be?”
Despite the kind words Joel has spoken I cannot unsee what will forever be burned into my memory. I cannot shake the feeling of jealousy. “I was just introducing myself but now that you are here I will give you some privacy.”
Joel’s eyes are glued to Julian’s movement until he is across the room and far away from us. “Dance with me” Joel says, holding out his hand. I take his hand wanting to fulfill my promise from earlier.
“About what you saw earlier” he begins. “Don’t worry about it. You had a life before I got here and we are not wed yet” I interrupt him. Our palms touch as Joel walks forward and my feet backwards to the rhythm. “No I don’t want things to be that way. I should’ve ended things with her the second the news of your arrival was brought to my attention” he replies, spinning me around.
Many pairs of eyes are watching us share this dance together but none could hear the words we spoke. Thus, smiles were planted on our faces the whole time we spoke. “You don’t have to. You don’t owe me anything.” I step back and curtesy signaling the end of our dance.
“I owe you my loyalty and respect!” I turn around and head back towards the table ignoring his words. “I am feeling unwell I’ve had a long journey I’d like to return to my quarters.” The king and queen flash sympathetic smiles my way, “of course dear go if you must” says the queen. “I’m sorry you put this all together for me not to stay until the end.”
“This was to celebrate you. You came and celebrated for as long as you could handle. Go rest now.”
“Princess there you are!”
From across the hall Joel holds one hand up gesturing for me to wait for him.
“You did not correct me. I addressed you incorrectly” he says, catching up to me. “There’s no need to it’s just you.” He seems sad at my short response. “What are you up to?” he asks. I glance over to my side looking out the window. “I was looking for more ink to write to my advisors back home” I reply.
“You can just ask your servants to do that for you.” I meet his eyes, “must we really rely on them for everything little thing when we are more than capable. We were chosen to rule and we can’t do something as simple as attaining more ink.”
“Do not belittle me” he snaps back at me. The air grows more tense the longer stand there looking into each other’s eyes. “I won’t belittle you when you stop pretending to care about me. I am nothing more than a girl with a kingdom over her head to you.”
His eyes close as he lets out a sigh. “We were friends before. Let us go back to that.”
“How can I do that when all I see when I look at you is you curled up in bed with another woman” I yell. He grabs ahold of my arm and drags me into a room with him. “For someone who thinks I am pretending to care about her you clearly care much about me.”
I pull my arm free from his grasp. “I know we may not be each other’s choice to marry if we were given the freedom to do so. I simply thought out of respect for the arraignment we have you would’ve been loyal to me as I am to you. I quickly realized that was not the case so forgive me for being upset about realizing I am truly doomed to a loveless marriage” my voice is full of bitterness.
“I already told you I apologize for that. I realize my mistake now. There’s no need for us to have such a cold marriage Eli. Again, we were friends before I hope we still are. You are a likable person that I can see myself loving in the future you just need to give me a chance.”
His eyes are honest making my heart melt almost instantly. His voice seems sure of everything he is saying which gently assures me.
“For the sake of our futures I will do that then. I will give you, give us a chance.”
He smiles so widely his eyes almost disappear. “Let me kiss you” he says. I take a step back moving away from him.
“Please let me kiss you” he begs. “I- I have never kissed another” I admit. He hesitantly takes a step forward. “You are so beautiful” he says. The tone of his voice is unfamiliar to me. It is full of want. I’ve never heard someone I wanted to speak to me in a way where they expressed their want for me as well.
“Are you going to make me get on my knees?” I giggle at that, “well maybe I will. A prince on his knees, ha.”
He bends one knee while ascending to the ground. “Stop!” I exclaim while grabbing ahold of the side of his arms. “Kiss me.”
He stands up just enough to place his lips on mine. As he stands up fully my head moves with his. The height difference between us makes my neck ache almost instantly from being stretched so far up. “The table” he mumbles against my lips. A tingling sensation erupts from my lips to all over my body. Our lips never disconnect as he walks me over to the table. He lifts me up and places me on top of it, making things easier on my neck.
“Is this okay?” he asks, pulling away for the first time since we’ve started. “It feels right.”
“Would you like to kiss more or are you tired of me already?” I quickly peck his lips which turns into a much longer kiss when he captures my bottom lip between his teeth. His hands wrap around my back and pull me closer to him without pulling me too far that I fall off the table.
“You know” I say between kisses. “I am tired of you.” With that he swiftly pulls away. “Did I overstep?” He takes many steps away from me.
“No” I giggle, “I must continue my task though. I need to know what is going on in my kingdom.”
He nods. “You should put your people first. It is comforting that you are getting some experience being a ruler. It will be beneficial when it is our turn to rule here.”
“That is nice to hear but you mustn’t say that to anyone else. You will be the only reason I have power here. You will be the future king of Laika the people will look to you to be their ruler” I say. “You will be my queen and you will have a say in everything I do. You will be an amazing queen to the people of Laika and you will help me be an great king to them as well.”
“I can see myself falling in love with you too” I say, smiling at his wide eyes. “I will see you around prince.”

summary: Elizabeth and Joel were set to be married since a very young age. After an unfortunate occurrence, Elizabeth must seek sanction in Joel’s kingdom. They haven’t seen each other in years and must now figure out how to love one another as they will rule together one day.
part one
On my 10th birthday my mother, queen of our nation, informed me of my future. Instead of being able to run around the castle with my cousins as children do, we were preparing for a trip. We were going to travel to a neighboring kingdom where I was to be engaged to their prince. engaged. At ten years old the man I was going to marry was chosen. An alliance between our nations would protect against future attacks from the third neighboring kingdom that had turned aggressive. All 3 kingdoms had once been one. Famine had turned people against each other leading to war which resulted in a split of the once golden kingdom.
“Your grace it is safe to exit the boat. The queen and the prince stand in peace” a guard, his name was Julian if I remembered correctly, said to us. My mother stood up first ready to give me away. I stood frozen in place. Confused, scared, and alone are all the emotions I felt. “Honey you must do this for your nation. I know you are scared, I was too. As royals this is our life. Love unfortunately is not a gift we are given. We cannot marry the people we love only those who are convenient. You are young  and have many years in the future to get to know the prince. Make the most of your marriage. Who knows you may even fall in love. Now get up and go” she says rather coldly. Sometimes I wondered if my mother really loved me. Surely she gave birth to me but she did not raise me. I was not old enough to be involved in state affairs so I was raised by servants. I wasn’t old enough to be around my parents yet I am somehow old enough to be engaged. It is a strange time I am living in.
I take my mother’s hand and hesitantly walk off the boat with her. We are surrounded by the sea and hills of green. Across the field stands the queen and crowned prince of Laika. He looks maybe a year or two older than me. I wonder what he thinks of all this. “I hope your journey went well” the queen spoke. “It was a smooth ride. We appreciate the concern” my mother replied, shaking the other woman’s hand. “Go on say hi to your future wife” the queen said to her son, pushing him towards me.
He walk towards me slowly. I eyed his every movement as he did mine. “I am Joel” he spoke. I smiled at him but said nothing. Maybe if I did not speak I wouldn’t be here. None of this would be real. “He is speaking to you answer him” my mother says, trying her best to keep her composure. “I am Princess Elizabeth” I say to him. His gaze falls to the ground beneath us. He begins kicking rocks but manages to still make conversation, “can I call you Eli, princess?”
“You may” I reply. He looks up again but this time the smile on his face is clear. “You are very pretty” he says. “And you are a handsome prince” I reply.
That was our first meeting. Shortly after we were taken to the castle and treated highly as guests of the king and queen. My mother negotiated with the rulers while Joel and I ran around the castle. When he learned that my birthday recently passed he ordered my favorite meal from the kitchen. We snuck into an old room in the castle and ate before jumping on a bed.
When I had to leave I felt sad but remembered I would see him again. We were going to be married someday. However, the next time I’d be in his kingdom would be either when my parents died or when I finally turned of age to be wed. I was hoping it would be latter but with the backstabbing in court that I unfortunately picked up on quickly, no one knows what could happen.
“I will see you soon” I say to him, holding my hand out for a handshake. “See you soon, Eli” he says before taking me by surprise with a kiss on my cheek.
6 years later
“Princess you must come with me now” one of my guards says, grabbing onto my arm. “Do not touch me” I yell trying to pull away from his grasps towards my parents. “You cannot help them but you can help yourself. They’d want you to get out of here now so you can live on and carry on their legacy” Ben says. He pulls me away from my parents’ quarters. “I will find whoever did this to them and they will burn” I yell at no one in particular.
It was a quiet night in the castle. There were no banquets, no wars, and no audiences with the king. I had gone to say goodnight to my parents when I discovered that their throats had been slit. Their guards were no where to be seen. There were traitors in this castle and I will find them. As I am dragged farther away from them, I begin to lose sight of their bodies. My parents were gone. I am a queen. I am too young to be a queen, but here I am.
“The boat is ready for you to sail to Laika. I will stay here and send word for your aunt. She is to be regent in your place that is what your parents ordered. You must go and wed your future husband and seek protection in their court” Ben says once we’ve reached the coast which is outside of the palace. “I-I’m not ready I do not want to leave. I want to stay here!” I exclaim in agony. I have no time to grieve I know this but that does not stop me from trying to stay in my home.
“Set sail now. Get her there safely you hear me?” Ben yells at the other guards on board the boat with me. “My queen” Ben bows as the boat beings to move along the water.
We make it to Laika the next morning. Upon reaching the coastline the sound of trumpets fill the air. Nobles, servants, and the village people stand around looking towards my direction. I notice the king and queen who are much older now, standing tall with firm stares. I scan the crowd but my eyes do not meet the familiar eyes I was hoping to see.
“My dear we are so sorry for your loss” Queen Anne says once we are face to face. Her voice was laced with sympathy and her eyes were kind. “You will be safe here” the king adds. “Thank you” I reply beginning to bow before them. “Nonsense you are a queen now do not bow” Anne grabs my arm and pulls me back up.
“Loyal subjects of Laika welcome your future queen and queen of Kedon” Anne announces to the crowd. “Is Joel well?” I ask through the cheers. “Why don’t you ask him yourself?” the queen says, her eyes averting to the scene behind me.
I turn around swiftly, immediately looking for him. A figure running appears in my view as they get closer. The bowing of people make me aware that the running figure is indeed the crowned prince.
Breathing heavily, his mouth hangs open as his eyes scan my face. His eyes are still the same shade of brown as the last time I looked into them. His face is more mature and his body is more built. “Hi” he finally says. “Hi” I whisper back.
“Are you okay?” he asks, placing both hands on my shoulder. He leans in closely to inspect my face. For the first time since the discovery of my parents death, I laugh. I laugh and smile. “I am fine now” I inform him. “I’m sorry about what has happened. You will be safe with me” he says. “I know. I am thankful for you and your parents kindness” I reply.
We stare at each other trying to take each other in. “You will have time to catch up later. Elizabeth needs to settle in and we need to go tell the kitchen to prepare for a feast. We will celebrate the arrival of our guest” the queen says, placing her hands on our backs and rubbing soothingly.
“Very well” Joel replies to his mother. She smiles at us both before returning to her husbands side. “Save me a dance, will you Eli?” Joel asks. The old nickname brings life back to my body. The weight in my chest is lessening the more I stand here.. the more I talk to him.
“I most definitely will” I reply. This is my new home now. My new friends, my new family, my people to guide. I am sad over the reality that my parents are gone but they have prepared me for this moment.  I hope I am welcomed here and truly safe like it was promised. However, I’d be a fool to think this court is any different than any other. Backstabbing and deceit is all a court knows. It is all I know.

1/ 2/ 3/ 4/ 5/ part 6
The screeching sound of metal comes to a halt as the train comes to a complete stop. “Are you sure it’s this stop?” Kristen asks. “For the hundredth time, yes!” I tell her while picking my duffle bag up from the seat.
Kristen follows behind me as we exit the train. “What color did you say their car was?” Kristen asks. “Light blue” I reply. “I’ve never seen a car that color in my life until now. Is that them over there?” she asks, pointing towards the vending machines.
“I think so yeah” I say. “You think so” she mumbles. “Listen I’m sorry for volunteering you to come here but you didn’t have to come. Stop being mean to me” I snap.
She sighs, “I’m sorry.. I am glad to be here and I wanted to come. Come on let’s go see if that’s them.”
We walk towards the car, looking in the windows trying to recognize a face. However we soon realize there’s no one in the car. “Where the hell are they?” I mumble to myself.
I look around the parking lot for a similar car but find none. “Pretty lady” at the nickname I turn around quickly. “There you are!” I exclaim. “Sorry I had to use the bathroom” he says, laughing. “Is it just you?” Kristen asks. He nods, “the rest wanted to stay and sleep in. Let’s go you’re both probably tired too”
“Who the hell are you?”
The booming sound of a female voice wakes me up. “Excuse me?” I ask, rubbing my eyes and sitting up from the couch. The last thing I remember was playing a game on my phone while Joel took Kristen on a tour of the beach house. Instead of finding out where everything is I decided to play a game. How smart of me.
“Who are you?” the girl repeats. She has to be around my age maybe a year or two older. “I’m Jennie. Are you Richard’s girlfriend?” I ask. “Ew” she scoffs, “no.”
Any lingering of tiredness is gone, “ew? Isn’t that a bit rude?” She laughs, “no.”
“And you are?” I ask. “You don’t want to know” a deeper voice from behind answers for her. I turn around and am met with Zabdiel’s large body standing over me.
“She asked me not you” she says glaring at Zabdiel. “I’m Lola” she says looking at me this time. “Who invited you again?” Zabdiel asked.
“You know Joel invited me, do you even have a brain?” Lola retorts. Joel’s name makes me perk up in my seat. Usually his name sounds much nicer but coming from her it gives me the chills.
“You’re being rude again” I tell her. “Hm that’s too bad I guess” she replies. “This is my beach house so I can kick you off my property in a matter of seconds. I’d watch what you say to me or anyone else for that matter” Zabdiel says before holding his hand out for me to take.
“Hungry?” he asks. I nod rapidly and follow him towards the kitchen presumably. “What’s her deal?” I ask once I’ve taken a seat at the island.
“She has been friends with Joel since they were younger. She used to be nice to us so I’m not too sure where we went wrong” he replies. “I’m not the only one invited by him then” I say, my shoulders dropping.
“Don’t let that hurt your feelings beautiful” he says. “N-no they’re not. Why would they?” I ask trying to play it cool. “Mhm why would they?” he asks with a wink.
Zabdiel turns around and pulls out a huge bottle of pink colored liquid. “I made a juice last night when we got here, want some? We can order food when the rest of them get up” he motions to the bottle. I nod, “please.”
The only sounds heard are waves crashing onto the shore along with the liquid filling cups. “A warning though.. Joel told us that in high school he had a friends with benefits arraignment with Lola. They have history and possible feelings between them. Be careful” Zabdiel says before taking a sip.
Don’t land on me, don’t land on me, don’t land on me, don- crap.
“Jennie!!” they cheer. “Truth or dare?” Christopher asks me. “Truth” I instantly reply.
“Have you ever buttered your own muffin?” he asks. Laughter erupts. “Buttered your own muffin?” Richard mocks him. “I’m not answering that” I reply.
“Answer or take a shot” Christopher retorts. “This game is so stupid! How old are we anyway?” I mumble, grabbing the bottle of vodka.
“Yeah yeah drink up” Christopher coaxes. I chug the liquid down for a few extra seconds obviously consuming more than a shot. Joel, who is sat to my right side, places a hand on my exposed thigh. “Woah there slow down” he says, laughing when I shake my finger at him.
“Just so you all know she definitely has. About once a week” Kristen speaks up from my left. Once my brain processes the words spoken I choke on the alcohol making my throat sting even more. If it were not for Joel’s hand on my thigh tightening up at Kristen’s words I’d be overcome with embarrassment. Instead my whole body heats up, his touch burning the most. “Sorry” he whispers before removing his hand.
Finally coming back to reality I smack Kristen’s arm. “Ow!” she yells. “You deserve that!” I yell back.
“Next!” Christopher yells, clapping his hands like an evil scientist. “I’ll spin” Lola holds her hand up. Chris hands her the bottle to spin.
“How surprising” I say when the bottle lands on Joel. “Problem?” she asks, her voice full of attitude. With alcohol coursing through my bloodstream I gain the confidence to reply, “with the coincidence? No. With you? Yes.”
Zabdiel snaps his fingers repeatedly, “that was true poetry.” Everyone expect for Lola of course laughs at that. “Did something happen?” Joel whispers in my ear, dangerously close to me. As he spoke his lips grazed my ear ever so often.
“She’s rude!” I whisper or at least I thought I did. “Truth or dare baby?” Lola asks ignoring me. “Dare” Joel responds. I try to hide my distaste at her nickname for him.  She smirks, “I dare you to kiss me.”
I burst out into laughter, everyone watching me in silence not making a move. “How original” I say. “Says the good girl who has picked truth the whole game” Lola snaps. “Fine, you want to see this good girl do something new?” I ask.
Not waiting for a response, I turn to my right. Joel is staring at me waiting for my next move. My hands reach for the collar of his shirt and pull him closer to me. “You told me to surprise you” I whisper, our lips slightly touching. With that I press my lips fully against him. He reacts instantly to my touch, placing his hands on my hips and pulls me to his chest. One of my hands travel to the back of his neck and the other to his hair.
My leg instinctively goes to wrap around his waist until he places his hands on my stomach. I stop my actions and pull away. “We have an audience” he whispers.
oh.
OH.
“I-I’m sorry I don’t know what came over me” I say loud enough so everyone could hear me before getting up and running over to my room.
knock knock
“Hmm” I groan.
knock knock
“Hm” I groan again, this time stretching my body. “Can I come in?”
“Mhm.”
My eyes shoot open when I realize I don’t know who I just invited into my room. I sigh of relief when I notice it’s Ashley, Richard’s girlfriend, whom I met yesterday.
“I brought you some water, a bagel, and aspirin” she says softly. I smile at her kind gesture, “you’re an angel thank you.”
“If you need anything else let me know. Everyone is up but recovering from last night. If you’re feeling up to it we’re going to walk the pier at sunset” she replies. “Wait what time is it?” I ask. She laughs, “it’s 3 pm.”
I gasp and sit up in bed. “I slept the whole day away!” I exclaim. “We were up really late last night don’t beat yourself up. Sunset is in a few hours so take all the time you need” she says, placing a soothing rub on my shoulder.
“Thank you.”
“I’ll go now, feel better.”
The door shuts making me wince. “Sorry” I hear her say from the other side of the door well aware of how sensitive my head is right now from all the drinks.
Drinks. Alcohol. Kissing Joel - I kissed Joel. memories from last night suddenly flood through my head.
I quickly reach for my phone on the bed side table, wincing at the brightness.
‘What the hell did I do last night?’ I text Kristen.
Three dots pop up on the screen.
‘We were all tipsy I wouldn’t stress about it. Plus he looked really into it’ she types back.
‘Are you going with everyone to the pier later?’
She responds, ‘hell yeah and so are you!’
How can I face him after what I did? I can never look or talk to him again.
Throwing my phone beside me, I take a bite of the bagel before downing the tablet of aspirin. I walk to the bathroom to brush my teeth when I heard my phone ding again.
i walk towards the bed while still swishing the toothbrush from side to side.
‘You up?’ Joel texted.
Well time for him to tell me he never wants to speak to me again.
‘Yes’ I reply.
‘Can I go to your room to talk?’ he asks.
‘Yes’ I reply.
I throw my phone on the bed once again before running back to the bathroom. I spit the toothpaste out, take my hair out of a ponytail, and tighten the black robe on my body.
knock knock
This time it isn’t Ashley. This time I’m having to face the consequences of my drunken actions.
“Come in” I yell. As I walk out of the bathroom the door to my bedroom opens. “Hey” he says immediately. “Hey” I reply.
“Um sit please” I motion towards the bed. He nods and takes a seat at the edge of the bed.
“What did you want to talk about?” I ask.
“Do you remember last night?”
I nod.
“Good” he says. “Good?” I ask.
He nods.
“I’m sorry if I crossed the line. I was drunk and I know that’s not an excuse but I’m just so sor-“
“Don’t be” he cuts me off.
“No?”
“I know you were drunk, I was too. This doesn’t have to change anything between us” he says.
This is better than what I had expected but it still broke my heart.
“It doesn’t?” I ask.
He laughs, “no.”
I nervously laugh. “Unless you want it to” he adds. “No of course not! I want to still be friends with you” I rush the words out of my mouth.
He places a hand on my thigh and rubs soothingly, “that’s not what I meant.”
“Oh” I exhale. i think about his words for a moment. “I- No. I won’t be your friends with benefits Joel. We shouldn’t even be doing this. We are friends. We just met and should be focused on getting to know each other” I say.
So much has changed between us so quickly. We aren’t as shy around each other anymore and I’m not sure what happened.
“I want you” he says. “What do you mean?” I ask. “I. want. you.” he replies.
i gulp when I realize what he’s saying to me. He wants me. I want him too but I can’t help but feel like this is wrong.
“I told you to stop being nice to me” I say. “And I told you I like being nice to you. Now I’m telling you I want you. What do you have to say to that?”
I shake my head, “I don’t know.”
He shifts in his spot to where one of his knees rests on the bed. The hand that was on my thigh moves to the back of my neck. From the corner of my eye I can see him moving closer.
His lips make contact with my cheek first, then my jaw, and then my neck. “You said you had a special plan” I say, humming at the end.
“Mhm” he mumbles against my skin. The vibration from his voice makes my whole body tingle. “What is it?” I ask.
He takes his lips off of my skin and locks eyes with me once again. “Remember when you told me you’ve never been to Disney?”
I nod.
“Well we’re only twenty minutes away from here so I got us tickets to go. Is it clear now?”
My jaw drops. I’m going to Disney. We’re going to Disney.
“Is-is what clear? Wait we’re going to Disney Joel” I squeal. He throws his head back in laughter, “is it clear that I like you? I like you!”
I now realize what has happened between us. Two shy people came to terms with their feelings separately leading to bolder actions. As the need of one another grew our confidence grew.
Tired of words, I wrap my arms around his neck and connect our lips. “Does-” he says but is cut off by my lips pressing harder against his.
He pulls away to take a breath and to ask, “does this mean you like me too?”
I nod.
“You’ll give us a chance?”
I nod again.
“We’re not dating that would be too soon. I do like you but like I said we need to keep getting to know each other. We can get to know each other as friends and see what grows between us” I reply. He smiles, “sounds fair.”
“We can still kiss though, right?” he asks. To answer his question, I push him back onto the bed and connect our lips once again.

part 1/ part 2/ part 3/ part 4/ part 5
The weekend had gone by very quickly as it usually does. Before I could even process being awake I was sat in yet another early class.
From the corner of my eye I notice a piece of paper being passed my way. When it reaches the person sitting next to me they grab it hastily and shove it in my face. I lean back in my seat to avoid a highly unwanted paper cut.
I wanted to be angry at the rude gesture, but I understand. No one really likes to be bothered during class, so I send a shy smile my neighbors way and take the paper.
Glancing down at the paper, my eyes widen in shock when I notice my name written on the front. I unfold the paper which reads
You were with Joel and Zabdiel at the party last weekend, right?
I look around the classroom until I meet the green eyes of a younger looking boy. I send him a nod to which he holds his thumbs up.
“Hey wait up!” I hear, most likely the boy from lecture. I wait outside of the classroom for him to gather his things.
“Thanks for waiting, I’m Erick” he says while extending his hand. I hesitantly take his hand in my grasp and deliver a firm shake. “Jennie” I reply.
He smiles while holding onto the straps of his backpack. “Did you want to talk to me about something?” I ask. “Right! Yes I did actually.. I heard they were looking for a new drummer. I was wondering if you could help me get in contact with them” he replies.
My head tilts to the side, “who?” The smile on Erick’s face falters, “J-Joel and Zabdiel. You said you knew them” he responds.
“Oh” I pause for a yawn, “yes of course. Sorry I’m a bit tired.” I reach into my back pocket for my phone and call one of the men of the hour.
“Hey pretty lady what’s up?” Joel says. “Since when do you call me pretty lady?” I ask with warm cheeks. “Should I not?’ he asks. “It’s fine just wasn’t expecting it. Are you still looking for a new drummer?’ I ask. At the word “drummer” Erick’s body perks up.
“Yeah, tomorrow we’re holding auditions. You should stop by” he replies. I pull the phone away from my face and relay the information to Erick. “What time are they?” I ask. “Start at 6 and end at 8 in the theater” he responds. “Alright I’m here with someone who’s interested. His name is Erick so when you see him tomorrow you better be nice” I say. “I’m always nice!” Joel retorts.
Erick thanks me before telling me he needs to go meet up with his friends. “No problem! Good luck tomorrow bud” I reply. “So are you coming tomorrow” Joel asks. I almost forgot we were still on the phone together.
“I have a club meeting at 6 so I can stop by after. I’ve got to go I just made it to the library” I say before hanging up.
Being that I never spend my spare time in the music hall, it was very difficult to find. However once I find it my ears are met with the sound of loud laughter. “If the next person is just as bad as the last I just might jump out the window” an unfamiliar voice says.
“What about Erick? He was really good and he seems to fit in” someone, Joel I recognize, says. “You’re just saying that because your girlfriend recommended him” another unfamiliar voice says. I didn’t know they had more bandmates. “She’s not my girlfriend okay sh-“
Joel is cut off by my entrance into the auditioning room. “Am I not a friend?” I ask. All four people in front of me visibly stiffen up. “W-well yes but-“
“And I identify as a girl so I guess that would make a girl friend huh” I say. “I like her” says the one with pin straight black hair.
I walk closer to the table they’re sat behind and unfold an empty chair. “I should properly introduce myself. My name is Jennie nice to meet you” I say with a smile. “I’m Christopher. My role in the band is lead vocalist and Richard here is also a vocalist who plays guitar as well” Christopher says.
“Nice to meet you” Richard speaks up. “Should we call the next person in?” Zabdiel asks, speaking for the first time since I got here.
“I’m still rooting for Erick” Joel says. “I really liked him too” Richard says. “Me three” Christopher adds. The three of them stare at Zabdiel waiting for him to either agree or disagree. “Fine we’ll go with the freshman” Zabdiel says.
They all erupt in cheers which puts a smile on my face. “Do you want me to go inform the others waiting? There weren’t that many out there when I came in” I interrupt. Richard pauses his laughter to answer, “you don’t have to.”
I shrug, “you keep celebrating and call Erick will you?” A light screeching sound fills the room as I push the chair back, but it is slowly drowned out by their chatter.
Staring at the ten people fiddling with drumsticks in their hands I immediately grow anxious. “Um excuse me” I clear my throat, “the band would like to thank you all for coming out but they found their match.” Some suck their teeth, some groan, and some just get up and leave silently.
A hand grasps mine and whirls me around. The anxious feeling in my stomach bubbles away as I get lost in the pair of eyes I’ve come to see very often lately. “We’re going to get ice cream to celebrate, want to come with?” Joel asks with hope filled eyes.
“I kind of have a ton of assignments to do” I reply. “Please! I’ll have you back in your dorm in an hour plus I’ll buy you whatever you want” Joel pleads.
Two modules, five math exercises, and a lab report to do. Checking off each assignment in my head I smile and say, “sure.”
Kristen squeals at my confession. “You are so whipped” she says, pushing my shoulders lightly. “This is not funny!” I exclaim suddenly feeling helpless. “You’ve got it bad” she continues.
I hastily stand up from the couch and head towards the bathroom. “Jennie has heart eyes for Joel” Kristen yells. “Should I book an appointment at David’s Bridal so you can-“ her words are muffled out by the bathroom door.
Stupid. How could I be so stupid? Why does he have to be so cute? And so nice how could I forget how nice he is? Seriously something must be wrong with him. What do I even know about him? Not much so how can I even like him? His stupid face I just want to kiss him.
A knock on the door brings me back to reality. “Stop overthinking and come out here” Kristen says. My hand reaches for the knob and slowly turns in.
I throw myself into her arms, “what am I going to do?”
She rubs my back, “just see how things go. You’re still getting to really know each other. If your feelings grow stronger and you want to tell him later on then I’ll hope you have the courage to do so.”
I hum in response.
Two days after I came to term with my feelings I received an interesting phone call from Joel.
“How’s it going pretty lady?” he asks. I’ve come to hate that nickname. Not because I didn’t want him to call me that but because I wanted him to mean it. “Just working on an essay, what’s up?’ I ask.
“Well as you should know there’s a long weekend coming up and I want you to come somewhere with me” he responds. Every single muscle in my body stiffens up at his words. “W-where?” I squeak. “Zabdiel’s parents own a beach house an hour away. I have something special planned if you agree to come” he says.
“Who is we?’ I ask. “The rest of the band minus Erick. He already made plans to go home. Richard’s girlfriend will also be there but if you’re still uncomfortable you can totally invite Kristen. There’s enough room for everyone.”
“Stop being nice to me” I say before thinking. “Huh?” he asks. I pause thinking of the right way to answer. “Kristen and I would love to go, thank you for the invitation” I reply. “That’s great!” he exclaims.
Kristen looks over at the mention of her name. “Where do you think I’m going?” she asks. I dismiss her question for the time being with a swat of my hand. “I like being nice to you” Joel says after the long silence.
“O-o-okay” I whisper. “Glad we cleared that up. Talk to you later pretty lady go finish your essay.”

“Now everyone repeat after me” I say then pause for effect. Two set of eyes are on me awaiting the second half of my speech. “No more parties for the rest of the year” I finish excitedly.
“Come on guys I can hear the crickets” I reply, tired of their blank stares. “This does not happen all the time so stop enjoying this so much” Kristen snaps.
“Hey, calm down will you?” I ask with a roll of my eyes. I huff while letting my shoulders drop hoping to somehow disappear, “I’m not enjoying this by the way. This isn’t fun at all.”
Joel sighs loudly, “listen it’s been a long night for everyone I’m sorry you both got dragged into this. I promise I’m going to get you back to your dorm safely just- just don’t fight.”
“Who’s fighting? No more of that tonight” Zabdiel says, approaching us again. His laughter catches us off guard.
Is he seriously laughing when he’s the one who caused all of this?
I grab onto Kristen’s hand tightly as she pushes us through the crowd. Finally finding the bathroom, we take a place in line. Kristen is shifting back and forth clearly needing to use the bathroom more than I do.
“I swear if someone is fuc-“ her words are cut off by two bodies stumbling out of the bathroom, giggles leaving their mouth. Kristen’s fists tighten at the sight followed by her body surging forward.
I grab her shoulders just in time before she’s out of reach and stop her from yelling at the two. “Kristen even if you did fight those people I think you’d be interrupted by your pee” I say, pulling her back towards me.
She flashes a disgusted look my way, “you’re gross.” I laugh at her reply, “says the person ready to pee herself just to fight two random people she’s never met.”
The person in line before us turns around slowly. “You can go next” they say looking very timid. “Look now you’ve scared this poor girl” I say while nudging Kristen’s side.
“It’s okay I can wait. Sorry if I scared you..” Kristen says. The girl tells us it’s fine and that we can both skip her line.
—-
Banging on the bathroom door makes my jump slightly. “Someone is in here” I yell. “Jennie you need to get out here right now!” I hear Kristen yell.
Sighing, I fix myself and exit the bathroom only to be pulled away. “What’s going on?” I ask. Kristen pulls us once again through bodies grinding against each other.
There’s a circle of people yelling the word “fight” repeatedly as if they this were a football game. “Did you bring me here to watch a fi-“ a gasp leaves my mouth when we’re finally on the other side of the circle.
“Calm down dude it’s not worth it!” Joel yells, pushing Zabdiel backwards. While he’s busy playing mediator, a guy I have never seen before chargers for both Joel and Zabdiel. Before I even process my actions I step closer to the chaos.
“Jennie!” Kristen yells from behind me. Everything slows down around me and the sound of yelling and people being hit is drowned out. Joel is suddenly in front of me waving his hand in front of my face. His lips are moving but I cannot hear what he’s saying.
Behind him, three other guys gather themselves and leave. That’s the last thing I saw before everything went black.
—-
Gasping, my eyes shoot open and my body surges upright.
“Ow!” Joel screams. I look over to my right and see Joel covering his face with both hands. “Where are we?” I ask.
He only groans in response. “Look around babe we’re at a gas station” someone says. I turn to my left, practically giving myself whiplash, and squint trying to focus on the person in front of me. “Z-Zabdiel?” I ask.
“Jennie!” Kristen yells while running over to me. She drops the two plastic bags in her hand to the ground. “What the hell is wrong with you? You scared me!” she says, pulling me in for a hug.
“My face still hurts” Joel groans yet again. “Why would your face hurt? Stop interrupting our reunion!” Kristen says to him.
“Why would your face hurt?” Joel asks in a higher pitched tone obviously mocking Kristen. “When this one” he says, jabbing a finger against my back, “woke up she took me by surprise and her head smashed against my face.”
When he says that I notice the predicament I’m in. My bottom half is sitting on grass meaning my head had been resting on Joel’s lap. The realization causes me to grow shyer, slowly moving away from Joel.
“Go get your friend ice or something” Kristen directs her words at Zabdiel.
Zabdiel.
“How do you two know each other?” I ask while pointing between Joel and Zabdiel. “You know Zabdiel?” “You know Joel?” they ask at the same time.
“Answer my question first!” I whine. Joel scoffs, “remember the band I was telling you about?” I nod in response. “Well Zabdiel is the bassist” Joel finishes.
I look over at Zabdiel, “who were you fighting.. and why?” He looks down at the floor becoming embarrassed of his actions. “They’re another band on campus. There’s this competition coming up and the lead singer was trying to steal our drummer” Zabdiel replies.
“So you fought him?” I ask. Zabdiel shakes his head, “that’s not why. After he got Edwin to join his band he started badmouthing us so I uh I hit him.”
Kristen laughs loudly. All of us look at her with wide eyes. “We need a new drummer” Joel says softly before bursting out in laughter as well.
“N-none of this is funny” I say with a questioning tone. Kristen throws herself onto my body from laughing too hard making me laugh as well.
“You’re all delirious right now aren’t you?” Zabdiel asks. When he gets no response he walks into the store near the gas pumps.
“You were all laughing when I left so why can’t I laugh now?” Zabdiel asks once he notices our glares.  “Reality hit” is all Joel says. “Can we leave now?” Kristen asks. Zabdiel nods, “the guy said the pumps are full now. I’ll fill up my car and we can get going.”
Joel’s hand reaches for mine. The warmth of his skin against mine makes me shiver. “You’re freezing! Are you okay?” he asks worriedly. I nod too tired to speak. He takes off his denim jacket and wraps it around my body. “It’s not much but hope it helps” he says.
I mumble a thank you and wrap it tightly around my body before standing up. Time to go home finally.

part 1 // part 2 // part 3
Silence
A silent environment is usually the most comfortable to me, but right now it just feels awkward. My happy place is being sprawled out on the couch, book in hand, the only noise to be heard is not a voice but the sound of rain droplets hitting the window.
Right now however, the kind of silence that envelops the air around me is tense. It makes the air feel crisp and almost painful due to my heightened senses.
clink
Joel grasps onto a straw and swirls it around in his iced coffee.
“So…” I finally say. “So..” Joel repeats. I clear my throat and sit up straight, “this is weird, right?” He nods immediately, “yes a bit.”
I hum at his response. “I mean it’s not that weird. Strangers go on dates so why can’t we?” I ask before realizing those specific words were not the right ones to choose.
“This-“ he visibly swallows, “this is a date?” My eyes widen at his question, “what I meant what strangers meet up all the time. We’re also not complete strangers so uh ..” my voice trails off.
“So this shouldn’t be weird” Joel finishes for me. I nod.
“Alright quick tell me 5 things about yourself so we can at least call each other acquaintances” Joel says. I take a sip of the bubble tea I ordered before speaking.
“Well I’m a sophomore at school, I’m a premed student, I’m a member of the science fiction club, I’ve never been to Disney World, and my favorite color is purple” I finish with a huff. “Now you!” I add, the excitement clear in my tone.
He smiles, “I’m the same year as you, I’m majoring in music, I’m in a band with some other guys that go to our school but they’re older, I spend too much time playing video games, and my favorite color is blue” he replies.
“Music major huh..” I smirk. “What is that smirk for?” he asks, laughing at the end. “Nothing just thought you’d be a photography major” I reply. “Well sorry to say you didn’t surprise me other than the fact that you’ve never been to Disney” he says.
My jaw drops in shock. “Hey!” I exclaim. “I’m just being honest” he replies putting his hands up in surrender.
“I’m very surprising” I huff. “If you still want to speak to me after today then I guess you’ll have to surprise me then” he replies. “I will be doing both of those things thank you very much” I say.
We smile at each other and fall into silence again. This time it’s a comfortable silence that fills my body with warmth.
The door to the bathroom in my apartment opens. “Ready?’ Kristen yells. “Yes!” I yell back. She slowly appears in our shared bedroom and does a twirl once her whole outfit is in view.
“You look good! That blue dress really suits you” I tell her. She smiles, “thank you pretty lady. Now what are you wearing?”
My eyebrows scrunch together in confusion, “but I’m not going anywhere.” She huffs, “this is one of the biggest parties of the year so please get up and get dressed.”
I shake my head. Kristen clearly is not taking no for an answer as she approaches my bed with her hands reaching out for mine. “No” I say. She pouts. “Nope” I say.
She groans, “please!” I bite my lip as I weigh my options. “You’re totally thinking about it so just come” she says. “Don’t you have other friends?” I ask. She laughs, “yes but I want you.”
Just as she finishes her last word my phone begins to ring. I quickly reach over for my phone ready to thank whoever it is for being my saving grace.
“Hey Jennie what are you doing right now?” Joel’s voice, which I recognize instantly, is slightly muffled. “What are you doing?” I ask. He laughs, “I’m at the kappa party which is why I called.”
I groan, “not you too!” Kristen perks up at those words. “Weren’t planning on coming?” he asks.
Before I can register what is happening Kristen grabs the phone from my grasps. “Hello who is this?’ she asks.
She stays quiet for a second before responding, “I’ve been trying to get her to come with me. Good luck buddy.”
My phone is placed back in my hand. “H-hello” I say. “Please Jennie. I promise you’ll have a good time” Joel says. “Promise? How do you know what I like to do to have fun” I reply.
“Let me find out then. I’ll show you a good time” he says. “You are both so annoying and owe me all the bubble tea I want after this” I say loud enough for both to hear before hanging up.
Now, what the hell am I going to wear?
