Remnant Explained

(for Code Rot AU)

I wanna yap a bit about my ideas/headcanons for how remnant would work and stuff for my AU so I’m dragging you guys along with me

I go into much more detail below cut!

Basic headcanons:

*Remnant can be injected in specific concentrations which can have different effects depending on how large of a concentration it is

**There are different kinds of effects remnant can have (currently just remnant decay and remnant sickness)

No weird ball pit properties from the books and stuff (or whatever that was about)

***Instead of using frequencies, remnant is the main component that makes illusion disks work

Most modern fazbear made animatronics have at least a small concentration of remnant inside them (probably from fazbear being lazy and reusing old hardware and stuff)

William did try and research remnant during the whole cb rentals era, but didn’t end up learning much and his view of it was more aligned with how remnant canonically works (if that exists idk anymore)

Michael and most of the spirits have a much better grasp on how remnant works than William ever did

Mike, Molten, Gregory, Vanessa, and Ennard all have at least a small amount of remnant in them

*Depending on how much remnant makes the concentration depends on what kind of remnant forms!

Light remnant: Light remnant is the most common form of remnant. Made up of a mix of spirits and molten metal, remnant can have a number of unique properties and effects depending on its concentration. In the case of remnant decay, light remnant can even recreate a new identity made up of the spirits that made the concentration.

White remnant:

white remnant (white rem for short) is the most stable and common concentration of remnant. This is the smallest remnant concentration. This is the concentration of remnant that Mike has.

Red remnant:

Red remnant (red rem) is the second smallest concentration of remnant. Red rem is made up of 2 or more spirits and is primarily used in illusion disks.

Purple remnant:

Purple remnant (purple rem) is sort of on a middle ground compared to the others, so to speak. It is made up of 5 or more spirits. It isn’t the most stable, but not to the point where it is unstable. This is the most common stage where remnant decay occurs, though it can also rarely begin much earlier on in smaller concentrations. This is the concentration Molten have.

Multicoloured remnant:

Multicoloured remnant (multi. rem) is the highest concentration of remnant you can get and where remnant decay becomes more prominent. Multi. rem is made up of 7 or more spirits and is the least stable of the light remnant kinds.

Dark remnant:

Dark remnant: Dark remnant (dark rem) is the most unstable state remnant can take. Dark remnant forms when a light remnant concentration increases beyond 10+ spirits. Dark rem is mostly a byproduct of remnant decay and is largely considered when the spirits previously making up the remnant concentration loose all sorts of humanity. Once remnant becomes dark remnant, it cannot be reverted and can no longer create their own identity/identities. Dark remnant is the main cause of remnant sickness. Ennard has this remnant concentration.

**Remnant sickness and decay:

Remnant sickness:

Remnant sickness can either be caused by dark remnant or long time exposure to remnant.

Minor side effects of rem sickness include: headaches, nausea, auditory/visual/physical hallucinations, minor insomnia

Major side effects of rem sickness includes: Major insomnia, fatigue, minor memory loss, and rarely causes fatal diseases.

Rem sickness only affects living people after 48+ hours of remnant exposure or 5+ hours of dark remnant exposure.

Remnant decay:

Remnant decay can occur as two forms: light decay and dark decay

Light decay is the least damaging of the two. Light decay is caused when remnant is accompanied by a complete spirit (one that wasn’t combined with other spirits and metal to become remnant.) Light decay basically makes the identities the remnant is made up of combine into new identities. When light decay occurs, dark decay will not occur later on. Molten is an example of light decay! It’s how Funtime Foxy and Funtime Freddy got their own sentience even though they were never possessed by a complete spirit!

Dark decay occurs when there is no complete spirit nearby when remnant reaches a certain concentration. Instead, it creates dark rem and looses the identities that made it prior. Dark decay makes remnant act more like an animal rather than its own spirit/identity. Normally, dark remnant is set on a single thing that managed to stick throughout the slow decay and loss of memories that will become its single driving force. For example, if a spirit in a remnant concentration had a goal of meeting someone and that goal became the last thing the remnant collective remembers, then the dark remnant will do everything to make that goal happen.

Other properties:

Remnant acts as a “glue” or a “magnet” for complete spirits. When remnant is injected into something or someone, if it doesn’t already have a complete spirit, it can cause a nearby spirit to possess whatever it was injected into. This is how Michael ended up “surviving” getting scooped.

At certain concentrations, remnant can also preserve dead things, almost freezing organic decay completely. This is also how Mike survived.

***With the illusion disks, remnant can be honed to increase the effects of remnant sickness which causes the hallucinations to become way more stable and consistent for a specific target.

Remnant cannot be destroyed by fire. Instead, the spirits have to be manually separated from the metal, which can be rather difficult, or the remnant has to decay.

Remnant is attracted to other remnant concentrations when it’s not injected into an item or person.

Other stuff:

Any animatronic confirmed to be possessed by a single spirit doesn’t have remnant. This includes the normal four animatronics, Ballora and Liz before Ennard, Springtrap/Afton, and puppet.

Golden Freddy still doesn’t have remnant even though they do have multiple spirits possessing the suit.

Scrap baby did technically have remnant left over from Ennard, but Mike helped Liz meticulously get rid of every part with remnant still injected in it that wasn’t Liz. This was mainly because Liz was worried about potentially loosing herself with remnant still being around so she ended up bugging Mike to help until he caved.

Mike does have a small concentration of remnant from the parts of Ennard still stuck in his body. No rem decay has began yet for him.

Molten, on the other hand, had been combined for much longer and with a much larger concentration, so their remnant ended up decaying much sooner. Thankfully there wasn’t any more remnant added to them and Ballora/Mrs. Afton was also there so they went through light decay.

Ballora, like Liz, meticulously made sure to keep track of every part that was her and was remnant to not loose herself in the amalgamation. With the light decay happening, it’s much easier to keep track now and she doesn’t see the need to leave like Liz had. Probably some sort of fear of being alone could also be why she never separated with them.

Vanessa and Gregory have the smallest amount of remnant of everyone in code rot (like a very small amount of white rem) and normal remnant properties don’t work because the concentration isn’t high enough.

No idea if half of this even makes sense, I just wanted to yap about this :3

I’ll probably make a doc that better explains this stuff in the future
