Random question but what do you think of Huey as a character?

Right, before we got to know him a bit more, I loved hating on him tbh. It was one uniting force, knowing that he was a dick to the clan members and all. I especially loved his relationship to the familiars (yes, the bad one, the one where he left them) because that meant that Eiden could come in and heal those two~ But then again, Aster and Morvay were so desperate to see him again that they dragged Eiden into the world... love it!

Also love him with Kuya, who was so smitten by him, and Huey was... not so much. Love that dynamic. (My HC also is that Huey was the one ordering Quincy to take Kuya's eye to replace it with a gemstone <3 )

Sssso what I'm saying is I kinda love Huey from the perspective of the familiars and clan members. We got this cold, talented sorcerer who wanted to help but on their own terms, and also, we got to imagine what kind of person he could be. It's been years since we've only heard bad things about him. So introducing him to the main story this way, kinda brought it all together. We were right but not exactly right...

I think he's an interesting character, but the most interesting part is how they handled him missing and how we could see him not for who or what he really was, but what he meant for the clan members and, by proxy, to Eiden (and to Rin).

The fact that according to Bird Edmond anon that the Winged are varied and even have their own epithets is both fascinating considering how they interact with each other yet sad because how what if certain types of Winged have gone extinct due to the huntings? How many have been killed for whatever reason they've been hunted for? How long ago did it start if according to Quincy's sotw pov even he thought they were extinct?

btw, these are just my thoughts / theories, but only BEA has the final word about these, haha! I tried to research a bit so I could give some worthy answers, but I'm no expert, so-

Personally speaking, I don’t really think some winged were hunted more than others(?). Say, if humans hunted them for their feathers, don’t you think that they could’ve striked a deal? I mean, birds molt, a.k.a, shed their feathers every few months! Though I guess poachers don't really think in long term, or in general (¬_¬ )

Given Guillaume’s fear, I believe it’s more like humans fearing what they don’t know; humanoid creatures that grow wings on their arms, have talons and loads of feathers, developed a language consisting of whistling and chirping, and don’t need magic to fly? I can see that scaring the shit out of Klein humans! After all, they’re not yokai, and… we’ve seen how some humans treat yokai still, like in Forest Carnival!

What I can theorize from what we know and what little I researched, is that the winged weren’t many in number to begin with. Maybe a population size of 50k~70k that's across all the Klein continent due to migration, but their main land was the Light Territory* especifically.

With time, each flock developed different phenotype to adapt to their respective surroundings as they migrated (which would explain the variety of appearances (epithets) without being necessarily endogamous), but when humans went after them and they reached very low numbers (3k across all of Klein, for example, like a small town), they all migrated back to the Light Territory, isolating themselves from other civilizations, thus creating the illusion of being extinct, when in fact, they weren’t. Which, fun fact, apparently that phenomenon is called Lazarus Taxon!

Regarding Quincy’s POV; he’s not as old as you may think! Someone on here did the math, and came to the conclusion he’s around 130~140 years old.

Now, a century may seem like a very short time for a whole species to go extinct, I know, yet that was the case for the passenger pigeon; due to the massive scale hunting (and deforestation), this species went extinct in just 114 years, and there used to be around 3 billion of these lil guys! So, it’s perfectly reasonable for Quincy to have thought/convinced himself that the winged went extinct, even more if their population was biologically small.

However, this is just me making numbers up out of thin air and relative information (Quincy’s supposed age), so do take all of this with a BIG chunk of salt, 'kay? I'm not the owner of this AU, after all ^^!
