Happy pride month specifically to folks on the asexual and aromantic spectrum who oftentimes feel isolated and left out of the conversation. You belong here as much as the rest of us and I hope that you are all loved in a way that is comforting to you.

Having external reasons for why, or partially why, a label might resonate with you doesn't make it any less true that it resonates.

Note
Ace culture is being mistaken as a lesbian, cuz I was spotted admiring another girl. She had great hair and pretty eyes, and I was admiring her leggings, but all in an aesthetic kind of way. And of course wishing I looked like that. But my classmates saw and now think I like her.
For the record, no I don't. I'm attracted to guys, but also purely aesthetic.
(I figure ace guys also get mistaken as gay for the same reason)

Aro culture is feeling that romantic relationships and gestures are just accessories to the primary friendship and surprise upon learning that allos view it as the other way around.

My two strong opinions are "I don't think you need a specific label for that" and "If a specific label actually makes it make more sense then by all means go ahead"

Y'all know that one saying when people speculate about someone's sexuality "bi until proven differently", so when will it be acceptable saying "ace until proven differently"?

My book on aromanticism and asexuality comes out in a month! Shout-out to my publishers for just... giving me free rein to ramble about:
How amatonormativity hurts absolutely everyone
Why there are so many nonbinary and gender non-conforming aspecs
Why asexual awareness is essential in pushing back against incel culture (because men and boys deserve to know that manhood is not defined by sexual desire or prowess)
Why coming out as aspec can be so incredibly complicated, espeically for aspecs of colour
Advice from aspecs on how to navigate sex and relationships as an ace and/or aro person
A really wonderful bunch of stories from aspecs on what their non-normative relationships and families look like, from queerplatonic partners to poly aspecs to best friends raising kids together
How refusing amatonormativity can help us fight the loneliness epidemic, by encouraging people not to retreat into two-person units and instead invest in multiple close relationships of every kind
What steps we need to take to challenge aspec discrimination in medicine and the law
Why all you aspec people out there are an indispensible, revolutionary force that helps us all explore and create new models of love, relationship and family
So uh please do check it out if you think it might be up your street (or just because it'd really, really annoy a certain children's author who's decided aphobia is the new big thing)

My dear lgbt+ kids,
It's June, so it's time for a little history lesson:
You probably know that June is Pride Month, but do you know why this month was chosen? It’s because of the Stonewall Riots that happened in June in the year 1969, in a bar called Stonewall Inn in New York (USA).
In the 60s, engaging in “gay behavior” in public (like holding hands, kissing or dancing) was illegal. Violent police raids of gay bars were common.
Especially trans women of color were regularly arrested and subjected to police brutality during those raids. Police officers would also sexually harass them by taking them to the bathroom to “verify their sex.”
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, there was one of those (homophobic and transphobic) police raids happening in the bar mentioned above.
According to many accounts, a woman named Stormé DeLarverie was hit by a police officer with a baton after she complained that her handcuffs were too tight. This sparked the crowd to fight back. They threw objects (such as pennies, bottles and stones) at the police, which ultimately led to several nights of rioting.
These riots are the event that paved the way for the modern gay rights movement. Within a few months, at least two organizations and three newspapers to promote LGBT+ rights were founded.
One year later, there was the first “Christopher Street Liberation Day” in New York (named after the street where the riots started). Their official chant was: “Say it loud, gay is proud.”
In the late 1970s, countries like Sweden and Germany celebrated their first “Christopher Street Liberation Day” events — the beginnings of Pride in Europe. Nowadays, there are Pride events all over the world.
Of course, this is just a short and simplified overview. If you want to deepen your knowledge, there are plenty of ways online to learn more about the history of Pride Month!
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

shoutout to aromantics that have a complex relationship with romance and relationships. to aromantics who do not experience romantic attraction but desire a romantic relationship. to aromantics who desire a comitted relationship but don't want to adhere to romantic standards. to aromantics who can't distinguish between romantic or platonic feelings and don't really want to label them. to aromantics who want all the kissing, cuddling, holding hands, going on dates, and all the romantic gestures but don't experience romantic attraction. to aromantics who feel like words can't accurately describe the feelings they're experiencing but they know they're strong enough to pursue a close relationship. to all aromantics that have a complex relationship with romance/relationships 🥂🤝.
