STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS — 1x09 ‘All Those Who Wander’

“I’d have to say you did,” Jim said, leaning back a bit and trying not to smile. “I guess I’m more in the dying would be an awful big adventure camp. Just less gleeful.”

He shrugged, taking a small sip of his water as he considered it all. “But as long as I’m the only one dying that day and not taking other people down with me, then I’ll happily say it’s an art I’ve mastered.”

Chris smiles, but it’s not a particularly happy expression. Somewhere, his mind is trying to renew the image of Spock, lying half dead on that bio bed. In how many timelines did Spock die for the sake of Chris learning his lesson?

He doesn’t allow himself to linger on those thoughts, but instead on the thought that Jim sometimes reminds him of himself when he was younger. Before visions of the future made him begin to age.

“I think I used to feel that way, too. That it would be sudden, maybe heroic. That there might be something after.” Now, it feels like a slow creep, waiting for him to let go of living, bit by bit. A little too morose to put into words. Instead, he puts out another line for Jim. “No way of being sure that it’ll only be you, though. Especially when you’re in a gold uniform.”

THE PROTECTIVE ONE

Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive?

Chris is generally a gentle love kind of guy. While he believes that honesty is important, he would rather listen and understand and give guidance rather than become harsh or overly blunt. To him, giving tough love would imply that he knows best and shutting out the other person's feelings, which is not his thing.

As far as receiving, he doesn't really mind receiving it if the other person is, in fact, in the right. He'd even prefer it if he's really messed up, because he is in a position of power and his mistakes affect other people. However, he typically prefers a person-to-person talk rather than a lecture.

hey so,  have literally never done this, but chris is a different kind of muse, so...

a few caveats:

he feels a lot in the moment, but he’s not into long-term or exclusive romantic commitment, so fair warning (he will be honest about this)

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS 1.03

Despite her best effort, her smile is touched with relief. It isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, but that’s alright. It takes time. Acceptance always does. They have time, she thinks, a prickling down her spine. They have time.

Maybe that’s why she meanders, letting him get his bearings. Vina leads him down the gentle slope towards the ranch set into the valley. Her greenhouses are around back, past the stables, but she has a feeling he might enjoy her outdoor beds. She doesn’t bother to tame them the same way, local grasses to her hip butting up against Torch Lily and Creosote. Some things grow strongest, most beautiful in symbiosis.

“I was a botanist.” Not before, never before, but never quite again. “I’ve tried to cultivate some of those singing flowers from the surface, but they’ve adapted to the radiation and thinning atmosphere.”

Like most forms of life, they can’t flourish underground. Even the Talosians have only wasted away.

Chris watches her. Is this the first time he’s ever seen her speak about something that matters to her, something about herself. He wonders--

He stops the thought. Not yet.

“A botanist?” He says, gently, knowing not to say it in a way that invites more detail unless she wants to give it. She knows the rules here better than he does. “Well, all I know about plants is which ones taste good, but I like these better. They look like fireworks and sparks.” 

He runs his hand over the tips of the grasses. The sensation feels real, and although he’s still aware that in reality he is locked away in the chair that is keeping his vital organs functioning, that even if he could reach out, his hands could no longer feel anything... It feels real.

It’s not. He could never truly convince himself that it is, but he lets himself have the moment. “I think I understand better, this time,” he adds, softly. “I think I owe you an apology... Maybe more than one.”
