This is an interesting question, because Tumblr is largely reblogs of cat GIFs. I will often write posts that are SEVERAL PARAGRAPHS long, and sometimes, straight-up, multi-page essays.

When I first joined Tumblr I remember thinking maybe that was wrong or bad, since I was new to the community...

I didn’t love Felicia Day’s last music video, but I watched through it because I’ve watched all her others and have loved them. I was entertained, I enjoyed myself, and saw nothing offensive or particularly weird. Unbeknownst to me, for others the video sparked a lot of anger, which I do not understand.

Felicia talks eloquently about their anger so I’ll leave that to her, go read her blog post. What I’m interested in is Felicia’s comment that she had no “relateable” women to look to in gamer culture. The cliché of gamer chick was a hottie in a bikini who didn’t really exist, and was created from the fantasy of the gamer boys who now turn around and flame real gamer girls, like Felicia Day, for their reality.

When I began watching the Guild a few years ago I was so relieved that there was finally a real representation of women in gaming. I loved it for that and also for it’s hilarious portrayal of gaming/nerd culture and gamer’s lives. That said, I also eventually had this weird sensation. I became resentful of Felicia Day (for a short while - I got over it) because people couldn’t stop talking about what a Hot Gamer Chick she was. The reaction the internet had to her made me feel that she was embodying the cliche fantasy that I initially thought she was breaking.

Part of it was probably jealousy, that I with my limited games (coming from limited money) couldn’t be a) a Hot Gamer Chick, and b) I probably didn’t even fit into the heading of Gamer. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I guess I realized that neither of those things matter. I play some games and I want to play more but my limited resources only allow so much. So I can call myself a gamer in exactly the same way that I can call myself a reader or a writer. It isn’t a label through which I understand myself, it is a category of extended interest.

I realized my resentment towards Felicia Day was just silly, because she is at no fault for becoming the new fantasy of gamer boys, because lets face it, she’s awesome. She’s not the fake-boob bikini-clad gamer chick meme, and in my opinion that is why she is, basically, the new representation of a hot gamer girl. Or a hot nerd chick. Because, smart is the new sexy. And real is the new sexy. So the smart boys out there, the gamer guys who are in it for the game and the interest and not for the trolling, recognize in her not a physically pleasing meme, but a reality that there are real girls out there who enjoy the same nerdly things.

So while Felicia Day has avoided using the term “Gamer Girl” on herself in the past, I wonder if she realizes what she has done for the other gamer girls out there, that she, and her posse of awesome ladies on Geek and Sundry, have given us faceless few out here the relatable gamer woman that she didn’t have. So thanks, Felicia. I’m sorry I resented you for like, two weeks. I got over it.

Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker

Bioware pokračuje ve svém tažení a po poněkud rozpačitém Redemption přináší ze světa Dragon Age animák Dawn of the Seeker. A nutno podotknout, že rozpačitost tentokrát není součást balení. Možná je to tím, že předchozí pokus BW přenést něco ze světa Dragon Age na plátno připomínal spíše fanfilm. Možná je to tím, že očekávání od Dawn of the Seeker byla tak zoufale nízká. Rozhodně mě ale tenhle počin hodně překvapil a hodně potěšil. Animace je sice občas poněkud prkenná, jinak je to ale eye-candy záležitost. Spojení klasické animace a 3D je bez problémů a matte arty jsou dechberoucí.

Příběh je přímočarý, nic nového pod sluncem nečekejte. 

Sám jsem byl ale překvapen, jak rychle hodinu a půl dlouhý film utekl. Rozmilý, ač trochu předvídatelný vývoj mezi dvěma hlavními postavami rozhodně potěšil a nakonec se ukázalo, že vlastně až zas tak předvídatelný nebyl. Ve vztahu ke kánonu Dragon Age je film ohleduplný, ale občas se mohou hráči podivovat nad tím, co to ti mágové provádí (občas jsou děsně slabí a občas děsně silní). Také zhypnotizovaná darkspawn partička pospolu s pár golemy mi spíše nadzvedla obočí.

Cassandra je však skvělá a je velmi zajímavé sledovat její příběh jakožto jediné postavy z filmu, kterou můžeme znát z her. ostatní postavy jsou taky skvělé, moje skromná teorie je, že se projevil scénáristický z dílny Bioware, kde dobrá postava je půl úspěchu hry.

Co tedy dawn of the Seeker je? Je to to hlavně akcí nabitá podívaná, která odhaluje trošku z rozsáhlého světa DA a s přílišným vysvětlováním pozadí se moc nepáře. Jako takový film potěší hlavně každého, kdo Dragon Age hrál, hlavně pak dvojku. Pomyslnou poslední hvězdičku sem si musel odpustit kvuli občas trochu pokulhávající animaci a sem tam trochu prkenným dialogům, nicméně jsem velmi na vážkách, zda jí nevrátit zpět za naprosto epickou podívanou při vyvrcholení filmu.(což jsem na csfd nakonec udělal) Mé obavy byly tedy rozptýleny, Film je rozhodně povedenější adaptací ze světa počítačové hry než leckteré Hollywoodské megatrháky (viz Doom aspol...) a už se těším na podobnou adaptaci ze světa Mass Effect.
