765874 - Unification has me crying in the club because this? This GETS IT. James T Kirk’s arc in a lot of the TOS media was about who he was, if he wasn’t the Captain of the Enterprise. In a very literal way, his passage into the Nexus and eventual death were a result of this fear; that he lost an intrinsic piece of himself when he wasn’t on that iconic bridge.
But TOS also never forgot; Spock and Kirk, hand in hand, this simple feeling? That’s what the core of TOS was. Spock died, and Kirk couldn’t touch him. Spock sacrificed himself for the Enterprise: the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the few.
And Kirk BLEW THE ENTERPRISE UP to get Spock back. His great destiny? Immaterial, in his need to save his friend.
Unification, with very little text, takes 3 versions of Kirk, contrasts them against each other. Asks: who really is James T Kirk?
And then it gives us the answer. The Kirk’s melt away into only one. James T Kirk puts the Starfleet badge on; he’s accepted the mission.
Because he’s the man that, when Spock is dying, the universe opens a literal portal through space and time, just so he can hold his hand.
And that?
That’s beautiful.

When I finished Riders I was not a fan of Rupert Campbell-Black, but by the time I finished Rivals I was besotted.
In Rivals Jilly Cooper definitely sold me on Rupert x Taggie. Rupert was still his rakish self when he’s introduced, but these small moments showed his desire to change for Taggie, and how much he looked after her when no-one else did
