AgathaRio thoughts but: I think people are getting a little too caught up on feeling like a backstory is NEEDED for the tragedy of Agatha and Rio to work. And frankly, it’s totally unnecessary.

The tragedy of Rio and Agatha is at the most base concept, they’re a love story about Death and a woman who has fashioned her entire life around trying to cheat death.

Agatha’s powers are inherently parasitic: it’s a defence she makes an offence to be sure, but at their base core she takes power from other witches to prolong her own life and amplify her own power. And she’s active in that goal: her power is a way to cheat the mortal limits of life and she’s completely embraced that. She’s used to being able to use her power as an exception from those limits. So when she begs Rio for an exception for her son, she’s viewing that in that light.

You love me, so let him live.

Rio, as Death, understands what Agatha refuses to accept; you can’t cheat Death. It’s the great equalizer. It’s there for all of us in the end. Rio does let him live, but she’s very clear; there are no blank checks from death. I can give you time with him, but that’s it, that’s the rule of the world.

Rio’s hurt at Agatha is that, from her point of view: she gave Agatha all the allowances she could. She gave her years with her son she wasn’t supposed to have.

Agatha’s hurt with Rio, in turn, was that time? It wasn’t enough. She was so hurt from losing her son, from feeling like she didn’t prevent his death, that she wasn’t able to accept that Rio hadn’t done anything but what she’d promised.

Death fell in love. She made an exception. Nicky was an exception. Agatha just couldn’t accept that. And when she kisses Rio, it’s the indication that she finally has accepted the reality of the gift Rio gave her.

You can’t cheat death forever; all you can have is time.
