Our last scheduled day :(
We started our day by visiting the Design District designed by Zaha Hadid. This building had an incredibly intricate and complicated design but was executed beautifully.

After visiting Hadid’s building we went and visited an all women’s university. The concept behind the design of their buildings was interesting. With the hope of preserving the greenery and older buildings the designer decides to build underground. Pictured below are multiple classrooms and dorms all underground.

We finished our day at Myeondong Shopping District. The place was gorgeous! In the evening all the street vendors line the streets and you can buy street food native to Korea! I also had the opportunity to visit a cat cafe. Which was super cute. After the cat cafe we wandered the rest of Myeondong and I did some “necessary” shopping.
For dinner we ate Pork Katsu. Which was probably one of my favorite meals we had here. I did learn that the spicy yellow mustard however had wasabi in it the hard way… but it was still delicious. After dinner we went and watched a play called Nanta.
I absolutely loved the play! It was funny and honestly can be enjoyed by any age range. I HIGHLY recommend watching the play if you are able to visit Korea. However they also travel and do this play else where. If you’re able to catch it definitely go see it.

I will be missing Korea so much. Until my next visit!

We started our day at the Raemian Gallery Samsung D’Light Showroom. Here we were able to see what the future of residential design could look like. All from personal robots to gesture control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From here we then headed to Bongeun Temple. What was so impressive about this temple was its easy integration to it modern surroundings. The modern architecture surrounding the temple is quite the juxtaposition and it’s so interesting to see!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From here we stopped for a quick lunch at shake shack… and let me tell you I did not realize how much I missed a good cheeseburger until I was eating mine. Sometimes you really can’t beat a good cheeseburger.
After the quick refuel we visited Kunkuk University and stopped by a container shopping mall. The container stores were really interesting to look at. I was able to observe how different shifting of the containers can change the interior. The concepts from this mall will definitely be applied in some of my future projects.

Today is the day we ride the Train FROM BUSAN. The bullet train took us from Busan all the way Seoul within 2 hours. The train went right through Daegu so I was able to see how some of the architecture differs based on location. From the bullet train we dropped our luggage off at the hotel and then traveled to Genesis’ show room.
The designers intent with this space was to make it for every car had its own environment. This is best represented by the layout of the cars throughout the building. We were also informed that the sounds in the building were the electric car noises and the smell in the building was their “new car smell”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we headed to K-Star road to tour the Kia showroom. While visiting K-Star road I was also able to step out for a moment and hunt down the BTS Bear
Tumblr media
We wrapped up this day by visiting the Nike pop up where we were able to customize our own Nike merchandise! We then headed to an eye glasses pop up shop called “Have a Shittt Day”

Today was a great learning experience! We had a workshop all day today which was an expansion of yesterdays short workshop. Since my group was able to establish a concept with the little time we had before we were able to move quicker and work more efficiently together today.
We got a campus tour while visiting Inje University for the workshop and I think my university should draw some inspiration from them as well! The workspace was incredibly inspiring and definitely helped us wrap up our project.
Our concept was Angle of Nature and it was inspired by Tadao Ando’s Glass Museum which my group and I visited while on Jeju Island. I really enjoyed doing this conceptual work again after just finishing a semester of just construction documents. It was both fun and challenging to come up with a completed concept and board within 3 hours. My group consisted of including myself 4 designers and 1 fashion major. I believe we all worked well together to create a good conceptual solution.

I enjoyed working with my group and the other Korean students throughout this trip it was a pretty emotional good bye. I will forever cherish the memories we made together and will have to keep in contact with them in the future.

This day was dedicated to meeting our Korean group members and having time together. We started the day by participating in a small workshop where we were introduced to the project and had a site visit to Inje University Paik Hospital. The conditions for the project were to re-conceptualize their outdoor space for their patients. Although they have an already pre-existing space… it is not used. This could be due to signage/ lack of knowing it exists or because the space is not as enjoyable as it could be.
Tumblr media
After the site visit we all toured the Busan cinema center. This building is one large cantilevered space. One interesting fact we learned about this space is that since Busan gets really windy there are hidden columns that come out of the ground to hold the cantilevered building in place.
Tumblr media
After visiting the cinema center we had more team bonding at Shinsegase Department Store. Which is the largest department store in world. We have nothing like this in Kansas so it was amazing to see. also due to a change of plans we were able to stop by the Busan Marine Museum. In the evening the our Korean partners treated us to Tteokbeokki and a small tour of Busan.

To start our day we visited Bangju Church which is sometimes often called Church or the Sky was done by architect Itami Jun. Bangju translates to Noah’s Arc. You can see that this translation affects the architecture that Itami Jun had planned for this building. The reflecting pool which makes the building appear to be floating on water pays homage to its name.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our next stop was at the Bontae Museum. This building was created by Tadao Ando where nature and architecture live in harmony with each other. It hold a combination of Modern and Traditional exhibits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After visiting these two locations we say goodbye to the Inje students in Jeju until we will meet again in Busan.
Once we arrived in Busan we got some fried chicken and wrapped up our night with the Inje students singing Karoke. So glad I can cross this off my bucket list now!

The start of day! Today we headed to a cute island just off of Jeju. Udo-Myeon is it’s name. In order to reach this island you have to catch a ride on a local ferry service. This was my first time on a ferry and it was really cool watching all the cars back into the boat.
While exploring the small island of Udo-Myeon we made sure to visit memorial attraction done by the architect Hundertwasser who’s mission was to never use a straight line. This definitely reflects in his work. Every window at the memorial had a different shape, size, tile. It was amazing nothing was alike. Even the path was uneven and had different elevations.
The walk up to the park was also gorgeous I saw the cutest bunny buggies that are used to get around the island. Since the island is smaller cars weren’t as common. There definitely was still some but these buggies and bikes were more popular. It was also so cool being so close to the ocean… having the ability to just climb on some lava rocks and be sea side was so 대박…

Towards the end of our day we then headed back to the main island where we visited some more of Tadao Ando’s work in Korea. Glass House being one of his earliest and most infamous works it was nice being able to see it in person and truly appreciate his techniques.

Today we headed to Jeju to meet the Inje University students. Our first stop was at a Jeju theme park attraction where we got early access to a new exhibit they are opening up tomorrow (5/25) it was definitely fun reliving some of my childhood in the ball pit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then headed to Osulloc Tea Museum where I learned Jeju is not only famous for their tea but also for their oranges which are grown exclusively here and are called Hallabang. This is also where I ate at probably the best cafe food I have had so far it’s seriously amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this outing we checked into our hotel with the Inje University students and then headed out to the local fish market. Here is where I tried Tanghulu which is a sugar coated fruit and it’s delicious! Later this evening we all went out and got Korean Fried Chicken together! Although, there is a language barrier everyone is very eager to talk to each other and have no problems with using translation apps! It’s been lovely getting to know them :)

Started the first day off in Seoul this morning! To start my morning I ordered a 바나나 카페라떼 (Banana Cafe Latte). It was delicious! I highly recommend it.
Tumblr media
After having my morning coffee I was fully prepared to start my day. Our first location was “N” Seoul Tower. This location was beautiful. The drive there also allowed time to enjoy the Korean scenery and appreciate the city scape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The views from the tower were amazing…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next stop was Gyeong Bok Palace. The complex was huge and my jet lag definitely started to kick in here but the place was gorgeous. Hopefully, next time I come I can rent a Hanbok.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We wrapped up our day shortly after here by having Samgyeopsal (삼겹살) for dinner! I will definitely be needing more of this before leaving! Afterward we got to continue to explore the city a little bit on our own.

Until my post tomorrow!

안녕하세요!
6 more days until D-Day! I have finally finished my packing and planning. Things are starting to become more real and I can’t wait for this next adventure. I think I’ve done a pretty good job at packing light… I know my shopping addiction will kick in almost as soon as I land so I have made sure to leave one whole side of my checked bag empty and carry extra light on my carry on.
As an extra precaution, I may also pack a foldable duffle to have in my checked bag since I do get 2 free checked bags. It might serve as an extra “uh oh I bought too much” bag.
Anyways! More posts to come 👏
계속 지켜봐 주시기!
