lrb, it me!
also practice update: a friend of mine is a hobbyist musician, and is currently practicing the guzheng (he has a thing for Chinese instruments) and i was talking to him about my music practice progress (I started about the same time as he got his new instrument, so we chat about it sometimes when i catch him during practice) and he told me that in chinese music, they often use a number notation for their sheet music.
He sends me sheet music for amazing grace done in this notation, and lo and behold i can actually read it! nashville number system is so cool guys

New animation test for my sharkfolk ocs! 🦈✨
After doing some stuff about Roberto, now it's Tiago's turn, Roberto's best tiger shark friend! I hope you like it, I'll try to do two more short animations of him.
Tiago likes geeky stuff, like comics, movies and especially video games! He takes immersion very seriously, and sometimes when there is too much sensory overload, he prefers to enjoy these things in the quiet of the night! 🎮🦈

had a short practice sesh today because im sleep deprived and wanna go to bed but i wanna keep this habit going.
glad i did too because i accidentally discovered the circle of fiths? I was in band thru middle and high school, so i did learn a bunch of music theory at some point in the past but ive forgotten most of it. so picture me (funny little dragon in my den with my hood over my head) poking at my midi keyboard going "what the fuuuuuck" as im discovering that some minor keys share all their notes with some major keys, and they have a predictable spacing from each other.
im pogging out of my mind and then one of my friends plainly tells me thats the circle of fifths. TBH it is very fun not remembering theory and just tripping over this stuff as i practice.

AuDHD is so funny sometimes like what do you mean my hyperfixations/special interests will last for years on end or possibly forever but they will cycle out every month or two with absolutely no transitional period or warning. like i will think about the same topic every day obsessively for 46 days in a row and on the 47th day with no visible cause adhd brain goes "ok! bored of that now" and autism brain goes "dw i got something queued up for ya" and i blast into full blown obsession on some other topic whose mental file folders haven't opened in 9 months. brain's out here treating hyperfixations like a crop rotation. once the dopamine runs out it cycles in another one but once something's in the rotation it never ever leaves. last summer we brought in one from when i was 11. it's so funny to me but frustrating too bc like. i cannot stress enough my inability to predict or control this. or how completely abrupt and random it can be

So a couple days ago, when i was getting geared up to learn about music production, I found a great youtube video that taught me some basics. I'll go ahead and link that here
youtube
The most useful thin in here right now for me is the nashville number system. I started playing chords with this in mind, and finding major and minor scales, and I kept stumbling on chord progressions I recognized from songs. it's pretty fun!
During my bit of practice today, I was using an instrument preset in sunvox that instantly reminded me of BLZ's album Whispers. I always think of his music around the start of the month, because each track from Whispers corresponds with a month of the year. If you want to listen to it for yourself you can either download the album here:
or you can listen to it on youtube here:
youtube
(I chose this upload because it has the beautiful album art on it. but I want to note that i first heard this album from Reclusive Lemming on youtube, who was my go to for finding new chiptunes for a long time.)
anyway. I started poking around keys to find out what key the beginning of January was in, and i was somehow pressing all white keys. i was thinking, no this song is way too sad to be in c major. could it be there's just a ton of accidentals? i also found out that a minor shares all the same notes, but the starting position makes it sound just a bit more sombre. turns out i do not have perfect pitch, which I sorta thought I did since when I'm just whistling or singing I never have this issue. When i played January to listen along, i was very obviously in the wrong key, and eventually nailed it down to G flat minor. that was a fun little ride for me.

my new years resolution was to actually practice music, instead of sitting around wishing i did. my goal is to do a little bit of practice every day, maybe I'll even make something that sounds good this year. The purpose of this blog is for me to journal about my progress.
Tumblr media
This a screen cap of my second song in sunvox (I made one yesterday) I wont post audio because im not happy enough with how it sounds yet, but sometime in the next few weeks maybe I'll start posting my little blips and boops i make along this journey.
I'll tag all my posts #dederg , and all my post specifically about my daily progress as #dergtunes
