                                    He's been maneuvering through the wreckage                                     all morning, stopping every step or two to check                                     on the survivors, making sure that their injuries                                     are only superficial. Aside from the U.S. Marshal,                                     the other passengers have surprisingly walked                                     away from the crash with only a few scrapes —                                    Jack included.                                                     If he was a man that believed                                                      in luck, he would allow himself                                                     to say that they had all won the                                                     lottery.

                                    The boy in front of him doesn't seem to have                                     garnered more than a few cuts, but Jack figures                                     it's better to be certain; after handing him a half-                                     full bottle of salvaged water, the doctor kneels                                     on the sand and studies the youth's rust-stained                                     features.

                               It’s s w e l t e r i n g l y hot, and there’s a touch of                                red colouring the teenager’s cheeks. He’d never                                been good with heat, and oft his skin burned due                                to the sun rather than grow tanned. Sand and                                blood stained fingers would reach upward, tug the                                cap upon his head lower over his eyes before he’d                                sit next to the other, shaded gaze casted out over                                the calm, gentle waves that rocked against the                                shore.

                                                                 It was hard to believe that just a                                                               few days ago, the beach and tide                                                                         had been a sea of carnage.

                        There's a half-chuckle given                          to the teen, though it's more                          an exhalation of relief; at least                          the island hadn't taken the kid's                          humor.

                               Luckily, Jack could say he                                did have a full bottle of fresh                                water to give, which he pulls                                from the pack on his shoulder                                and hands to the boy. It's easier:                                taking care of the others than meeting                                his own needs. But that was a doctor's                                job.

                    "'M good. Fine, yeah.                       Listen: a few of us were gonna head                       through the jungle — see if we might                       find anything we can use.

                                          -—— Might get your mind off that                                                    Adderall if you feel like tagging                                                                                                along?"

Something                                                  that Stiles, just like everyone                                                  else on the island, never                                                  thought he’d have to go                                                  without.
