The Soviet Union invested so much in science and technology that there are so many things (nuclear physics and geology come to mind) that would be incomplete or outright non-existent without Soviet science. From a mere practical view it was a great way to have a worldwide perspective on things; if the US had a deep-sea submarine, the Soviets had one too, if the UN needed a program against disease, both West and East had facilities for it, if the Soviets had a space program the US had one in response and by the end they collaborated. It was not only the massive achievements of Soviet science on its own but also its possibility for international cooperation that truly made them shine. There's still a lot of instruments and sophisticated laboratories of which there are always just two, one in the US, another in Russia.

The catastrophic collapse of science and technology with the breakup of the Soviet Union was a tragedy for science all over the world that we still haven't realized the magnitude yet. The post-Soviet scientists went from having some of the most sophisticated research in the world to facing starvation and suicide. Imagine just how much humanity could have discovered if it didn't happen.
