amused countenance studies the woman before her with utmost attention. there is something extremely soothing about watching elain archeron tend to the flowers in the gardens, as if they were her own children, as if, each time she held them in her hands, she were touching something precious.

nina has never really considered plants as sentinent beings ( you were raised to kill, to barely consider the enemy a living creature ), though she wonders, now as she watches elain hum to the rosebushes, if they can hear the melody, if they can feel. nina doesn't know why that notion disturbs her as much as it does.

NINA AND NE CRO MAN CY. what a concept!!!!

i like the idea that people can sense something macabre and eerie about nina (they can sense the corpsewitch behind the girl), an aura of death folllowing her that she tries fervently to conceal behind expensive perfumes and gowns and her pretty face. because while zoya embraces her inner monster, nina is terrified of it. she likes looking nonthreatening, she wants to look soft and beautiful, because while it also helps in case of a surprise attack, nina is horrified by her own darkness.

Ok but nina smells like strawberries and vanilla and the scent is strong on her ( to the point that it can be smelled clearly from afar ) and she does it purposefully, despite being advised against it during her trainings in the Little Palace ( as having a strong, identifiable scent is a liability to a soldier ).

However, nina persists on having a strong yet sweet scent around her, not only because of a bit of vanity, but also because she discovered that hearttrending is heavily linked to how the grisha’s own body and brain behave. By surrounding herself with a scent that soothes her and brings her happiness, nina is keeping her own body’s wavelength steady. Yes, i headcanon that hearttrender grisha can easily lose control of their powers when altered or agitated ( even to the point of harming their own bodies ).

Also, the other reason for Nina’s strongly scented perfumes of sweet desserts is because, sometimes, if she pays close attention, she swears she can smell the sour, rotten stench of death on her skin, and it brings her an overwhelming desire to claw and rip her own flesh - and being a hearttrender, it could actually happen if she lets such intrusive thoughts take over.
