Day Nine, Part Two: In Which The Cannon Is Fired

Previously: Haplo confronts Xar, ultimately rejecting his grab for power and choosing instead to save as many people as he can. Haplo tells the Inquisitor that destroying the Chalice will provide a way to create enough panacea to eliminate the plague, and she has agreed to deploy three messengers into the town to find Commander Edmund and relay the orders. If they do not reach him in time, he will be forced to fire on the entire town to rid it of the disease. And Haplo still has several sick children to cure, as well. This episode: Haplo makes sure the kiddos are okay and then figures out what happened to those dang messengers. Oh, also the bigass cannon gets fired.

Whatever you do you'll have to sacrifice something. Destruction is inevitable. There's no miraculous way out.

We don't talk about Haplo standing between Xar and Alfred enough

Like. Obviously the most important thing in that moment is that Haplo has to stop Xar from trying his reverse sundering bullshit.

But it is also very much about Xar being fully prepared to kill Alfred, and Haplo knowing exactly how little Alfred's life is worth to Xar in this situation, because he knows Xar better than anyone, and he also knows that however little Xar values Haplo's life it's at least enough for him to try talking to Haplo before attacking him-- which he also very much knows Xar will do, in the end.

And ugh Haplo listening to Xar talk about his kid, about Marit, about how he "serves" a Sartan now, and through all of this needling he just. Stands his ground.

Literally never once think that just because I don't shut up about Alfred ever I don't care about Haplo. I'm just not as good at putting Haplo thoughts into words. I am physically weeping reading his little description in his hand of chaos first person diary he's like "my dog gave me a will to live but Car gave me a purpose, a cause to serve-" and I'm like 😭😭😭😭😭😭 you don't even know yet. God the final confrontation there. God.

I can't stop crying I love him so much. And then he tried to save Xar anyways,,,,

It's about the Alfred Is An Alfred Simulator ok. I refuse as hypothetical show maker to hit anyone on the nose with the "Judging People Is Bad <3 (insert here) People are VALID <3" stick, because that insults the whole point. Slowly gaining sympathy to Alfred despite him being Weak Or Annoying Or Ugly Or just, embarrassing is the whole POINT, it's not just part of his in-fiction role in Haplo's arc but part of his meta point as a character, existing. Alfred is an Active Excercise of slowly making me you question and extend the boundaries of your compassion and tolerance, learning to see from the point of view of and care about a person on his entirety, and becoming used to and accepting of people, traits and things you did not realize you could care about before - he never stops being Clumsy or Feeble or, y'know, just that Cringe you still get on your fifth reread sometimes after him being your favorite character for years cuz he's genuinely Embarrassing sometimes- because the whole point is that slowly in your heart You Learn Not To Look Away. If he becomes digestible, acceptable, easily evoking sympathy, the whole jig is useless. The whole point of Alfred is that he doesn't need to be cured or changed, just to Take Action when it matters, and, on a personal level, his arc is about learning to Step Out more, because there is nothing about a person who fights for others and takes compassionate action that is not worthy of being Seen.
