The team is barely that at this point. In fact, mere minutes before, Tony has listed the team and their skills, and didn’t include himself. And yet this man, the same one who said he ‘doesn’t play well with others’. The same man who was told by another man on the fledgling team that he ‘better stop playing at being a hero’. The one person on the team, who if you take away his suit, has no protection, no formal training, is willing to stand there and give his team time to gather. In front of a vengeful and murdering God who he knows could crush him. With no protection.
Tony is willing to stand there and barely even flinches when Loki threatens him. He doesn’t raise his hands to protect himself. He doesn’t duck or weave. He doesn’t call the suit, even though he is now wearing the bracelets to do so. Instead, he stands completely still as yet another man leans in and threatens the very thing that keeps Tony alive. The arc reactor.
He must have images screaming internally at him of another man who reached in and pulled life from his chest and left him to die on his workshop floor. But Tony stands utterly still. His only movement being the rapid rising and falling of his chest as he sucks in shallow breaths. To give his team, a team of people who he has literally just met, whom he has no clue if they have his back, time. Because he knows they need him to. Because he knows it is right.
And then, in less than an hours time Tony; at a single barked, ‘Stark’ from Fury, will fly a nuclear missile into space on a certain suicide mission. With no doubts and no questions asked. Because his team needs him to.
But in this moment, sans suit, with no immediate back up and with memories of other situations possibly strangling his breath and lying like dead ash in his throat, Tony, shows that he is indeed willing to ‘lay down on the wire’ and do what he has to to save lives. He proves once again that no matter what is said or thought about him he, Tony Stark, and not the suit, is indeed, very much a hero.
