My New York Valentine
My New York Valentine by followyourenergy (@followyourenergy) Rating: General Audiences Word Count: 1k
Dean Winchester plans to drown his sorrows in waffles after picking another fight with his best friend since childhood, Cas, on their friendversary... which happens to be Valentine’s Day. His plans are stymied when he’s stopped on the way back to work by a man who wants to take his photo and chat with him. When the man asks about love, he tells him about his secret love for his best friend. Little does Dean know his secret will soon be revealed. This fic is inspired by Humans of New York, a popular Facebook page that tells true stories about everyday people in New York (and elsewhere).
This short but oh so sweet fic has a few of my favorite things. First, I love any idea inspired by cute internet trends or clever videos. Add to that besties Dean and Cas who are also secretly pining for one another? I couldn’t click a link faster.
My New York Valentine fits the bill perfectly. If you’re online, you might be familiar with the account Humans of New York but if not, it’s as described perfectly in the summary above. The account is special because it touches on humanity, regular everyday people living their little extraordinary lives all around us. In this fic, it’s Dean who is being interviewed, and the way Cas finds out about it is incredibly sweet and fitting, leaving you hopeful for this version of them. Don’t miss it!

sweeter coming from my hand
sweeter coming from my hand by perilously Rating: Explicit Word count: 9k
“In conclusion: Dean Winchester, will you marry me?” “What?” Dean almost chokes on his sandwich. “I’m trying to save your soul,” Cas snaps. “You don’t have to look so horrified.”
With Dean afflicted by the Mark of Cain and Cas quickly losing his borrowed grace, the solution is easy -- get married!
Dean is not amused with the prospect of marrying Cas. Not because he doesn't want it but because he's spent years perfecting the way of hiding that he's in love with Cas. How will he manage to do that with them married and their souls bonded?
What follows is a really sweet story with Dean seeing their marriage as a means to finally allow himself to admit what he's felt for Cas for years. And with Cas realizing he can confess his love for Dean without any fear of rejection.
Once the marriage takes place, their profound bond gets even deeper with them being able to sense each other's emotions and feel each other's souls. And it's really lovely to see them embrace each other's feelings no matter how intense and overwhelming they are now that they're finally free to express themselves.

Desert Rituals
Desert Rituals by lovemuppet Rating: Explicit Word Count: 26k
Since the death of John Winchester, Dean’s come a long way. In the small desert town of Joshua, Dean’s carved a healthy life for himself. He has a home. A business. A dog. He has friends. He even has a… Cas. Castiel Novak is the name of the long-haul trucker that frequents Joshua’s Desert Rose Truck Stop. They have this… /thing/. They don’t talk about it, but it started when Cas pulled a stranded Dean into the cab of his 18 wheeler and brought him to the Desert rose. Six years later, it hasn’t stopped, this… whatever it was. And it’s great! It’s enough. Until it isn’t. When Dean’s brother, Sam, finally moves into the spare bedroom, things change. As long-kept secrets come to light, Dean’s only hope is that things will change for the better.
This is a fic the fandom should be talking about. Trucker Cas, a soft Dean, and an ending I couldn’t have predicted at all told in a way I can’t wait to re-read. Desert Rituals is such a great fic. It pulls you in from the start with great dialogue and characters we never see enough of, like Max Banes and Nancy Fitzgerald. Dean’s POV is strong and well done, pulling you in like you’re right beside Dean as he describes the desert and the home he’s made there. He’s at peace, which is all we’ve ever really wanted for the guy.
Trucker!Cas is perfect, especially from Dean’s eyes, and it’s so enduring the way the town embraces the two of them, even when they aren’t quite ready to define what they are. We meet them on the verge of needing to find out though, and Dean’s pining is epic, and perfectly told through his grumpy stomping around. One thing I enjoyed was the changing POV, including Sam’s as he joins Dean in the desert, ready to learn about the brother he thought he knew.
Even hours later, I’m still thinking about this fic, and this Dean and Cas, and their little house, and the town they call home. Make sure you check this one out if you’re in the mood for a great pinefest.

More holidays fics to keep you warm this winter!!
A Very Merry Christmas by orphan_account [General audiences, 3k words]
Dean is Christmas shopping when he meets the Omega of his dreams.
Holidate by Kitmistry [Teen and Up, 34k words]
Dean and Castiel hate the holidays! Their enduring singledom leaves them subject to the judgment of their meddling family members or stuck with clingy, awkward dates on each festive occasion. When these two meet, they pledge to be each other’s plus-ones for each holiday celebration over the course of the year.
I Won't Even Wish for Snow by Annie D (scaramouche) [Teen and Up, 6k words]
It’s the third year that Castiel’s spending Christmas with his best friend’s family, and he expects it to be much like the previous two. Then mistletoe happens.
Married Christmas by wigglebox [Teen and up, 13k words]
Time has passed since the dust settled and everything had been put "right". Things once seen as impossible in Dean's eyes is now tangible to him. All it needs is a wedding band and the promise of a future full of love and happiness.
Mistletoe Angel by PeachGO3 [Mature, 7k words]
In the last week before Christmas, countless mistletoes appear in the bunker. Dean jokes about it at first.
Nine Times We Met (And One Christmas We Parted) by almaasi [Explicit, 58k words]
On the last day of school before Christmas vacation, Mr. Castiel Quinn discovers that one of his young students has smuggled male pornography into the classroom. Upon being told that the photos belong to the boy's uncle, Castiel vows to himself that he will keep the other man's preferences a secret. It's 1947; a man experiencing attraction to another man or fantasising about his sexual touch are transgressive faults, which could potentially result in imprisonment - or worse. But then the uncle walks in. The photos are of him: Dean Winchester, a rogue with an empty pocket and a child to feed. Castiel doesn't know it yet, but his life is never going to be the same again. Years pass between chance meetings, but even though they live their lives apart, Dean and Castiel's story is proof that absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.
T'was the Night Before Christmas by Jacqueline Albright-Beckett (xaandria) [Teen and Up, 1k words]
Surgical tech Dean and vascular surgeon Cas share their first Christmas -- but they've only been together a handful of days.
The Secret Santa of Cubicle Land by followyourenergy [General audiences, 4k words]
Castiel Novak has never loved the workplace Secret Santa tradition, but he loves watching his coworker (and his very straight, secret crush) Dean Winchester’s enthusiastic responses to his daily gifts. Dean is so enthusiastic that he declares he’s going to ask his Secret Santa on a date. They’re both in for a surprise.

Where There's Smoke
Where There’s Smoke by saltnhalo (@saltnhalo) Rating: Mature Word Count: 6k
When Castiel accidentally locks his keys in his car on a miserable, rainy night, a handsome, green-eyed firefighter comes to his rescue. Despite their initial spark, it takes a few tries before they can turn it into something more...
Are you looking for something lovely that will put a smile on your face so huge it hurts?
Then you’re at the right address 😁
Cas is just trying to live his life in peace and quiet, but due to a series of circumstances he is forced to call the fire department more than once before he even knows what is happening. And yes, it’s annoying and inconvenient, but that’s also how Cas meets Dean and soon enough he doesn’t actually really mind. It just might take them a little while to get to the page they both want to be on …
So yes, this story is wonderful and funny and also a tiny bit angsty, all just the right amounts, so if you’re wanna wrap yourself in a nice blanket tonight, right next to some candles or even a freaking fireplace, with a cup of hot cocoa as company, this fic would be the perfect addition to an amazing evening 💗

On Air
On Air by wincechesters Rating: Explicit Word count: 21k
Cas and Dean are radio DJs who host the second most popular morning show in Lawrence. They’ve been co-hosts for years at different stations across the country, and they own a house together out of necessity, even though they’re just friends. But for some reason, a lot of their listeners and even some of their friends and family seem to think that they’re secretly in some kind of relationship, which they’re totally not (besides that one time that totally doesn’t count). In spite of that, Dean thinks he’s got everything figured out, until an ill-fated on air game of Truth or Dare turns everything upside down (and the billboards around town aren’t helping either).
There are plenty of fics out there where Dean is the one dating someone and Cas is the forever single one, who gets to pine and be jealous throughout the fic before Dean realizes who he really wants.
So when I saw that in this fic it happens the opposite, I was immediately on board. Not only I have a soft spot for jealous!Dean, but it’s also refreshing to have the tables turned on them.
What begins as a harmless truth or dare game, quickly turns into Dean being confronted and ultimately realizing his feelings for his best friend. Dean has been in love with Cas for years, but not counting with “one stupid mistake” when they slept together while drunk some years ago, Cas has never showed any interest in Dean besides being best friends. To make matters worse, Cas has been dating a wonderful girl for a couple of months now. So Dean can do nothing but try to squash his feelings, all the while pining and being his grumpy self.
Fear not, though, because Cas’ relationship with Daphne happens all behind the scenes. And even though it takes a third party for our boys to get their heads out of their asses, it all comes together in the end and the reality is that both of them have loved each other for years.

Waveform Frequency
Waveform Frequency by LeverDrift (@girlblocker) Rating: Mature Word Count: 20k
Castiel doesn’t know how he got from the Empty to the floor of a barn. The last thing he remembers is saying his confession before falling with Dean onto the hay. And Dean has been different since his rescue, has thrown out all boundaries he’d ever said were customary. Humans always manage to surprise Castiel. Dean surprises him most of all.
I don’t know about you guys, but I sure as hell can’t get enough of all those beautiful, emotional and powerful post confession fix it fics!
This story is, of course, no exception.
It is told from Cas’ POV and it starts with him ending up on the floor of some barn, quite startled by the sudden change in scenery. Apparently he has been rescued from the Empty, but his memory leaves much to be desired, the last thing he recalls confessing his feelings right before the Shadow took him.
Castiel usually wouldn’t mind not remembering anything about the Empty, but soon enough he notices a shift in Dean’s behavior that leaves him rather puzzled more often than not. Because instead of being awkward and keeping his distance, like Castiel originally assumed, Dean stays by his side the whole time, initiates physical contact in such an excessive amount that even an angel of the Lord gets dizzy from it, and overall just suddenly acts so affectionate in his own special way that Castiel has no idea what to do with it.
And so Castiel starts to wonder whether the memories he has lost might have been very vital after all.
This story is told from Castiel’s POV and follows his utter confusion perfectly. The poor guy is so very bewildered why Dean is acting so differently all of a sudden and it overwhelms him extremely more often than not. He is so utterly torn throughout most of the story, between calling Dean out on it, in the process risking losing all the attention, and just letting things be and enjoying it while he can.
I certainly couldn’t put this fic down as soon as I started reading, far too excited for the moment Castiel would finally figure it all out.
So if you’re in the mood for something that will grasp tightly onto you, don’t hesitate to click on the link!

what a terrible world, what a beautiful world
what a terrible world, what a beautiful world by dullahans Rating: Mature Word Count: 35k
"Fix it," Sam says firmly when Dean doesn’t reply. "Fix it before you regret it because our lives are dangerous, and we've lost too many people, and you never know when it's going to fall apart." "It would be a lot easier if he was open to fixing it," Dean bites out. He's trying here, he's trying really fucking hard, but Cas doesn't want to hear it. "Maybe you're not saying the right thing," Sam suggests.(A season 15 fix-it fic that starts from 15x03 The Rupture, and diverges fairly significantly.)
Ah yes, the “divorce arc”.
Remember how canon gave us this wonderful, yet painful gift and we were supposed to be normal about it?
Good times 😆
As you can expect, Dean and Castiel’s relationship is fairly strained in the beginning of this story. Castiel is (rightfully) pissed, Dean is pissed, partly at himself, and nobody is really happy about any of it. And neither seriously has the time to deal with all of this as Chuck is still out there, Billie shows up out of the blue with a secret plan she doesn’t bother to tell anyone about and Jack is suddenly coming back from the dead. Oh, and let’s not forget the Empty deal that is still hanging above Castiel’s head.
Yes, it’s a lot and even though it seems that no one in their right mind would have the chance to wreck their brain over a seemingly shattered relationship with their best friend faced with the apocalypse of all apocalypses, Dean sure as hell spends a lot of time and energy on it.
So if you’re up for a rollercoaster of emotions with some engaging plot somewhere thrown into the mix, you seriously should give this story a try!

six hundred sundays (and many more)
six hundred sundays (and many more) by sobsicles (@sobsicles) Rating: Mature Word count: 15.6k
Dean starts falling in love with him on a slow Sunday morning under slanted sunlight that slips through the gaps in the trees. ~~~ "When did it stick for you? When did your six hundred Sundays start?" Dean asks. "It never started," Castiel admits. "It simply never stopped. My love for you is eternal—existing forever, without a beginning or an end." Visually, Castiel's love is a circle. Aurally, it's an echo. Kinesthetically, it's breathing. Overall, it is not fate, and it is not chance; it is choice. He would not choose differently if he could go back and do it again, and that's why he didn't choose differently from the start.
Castiel returns from the Empty after Chuck is defeated and everything is perfect. Or as perfect as he thinks they can be. He has his family, the world is safe, and Dean is still talking to him after his big confession. Castiel's feelings don't have to be a secret anymore, even if they are not reciprocated.
Except... except Castiel thinks Dean's feelings may be changing. He thinks Dean might be falling in love with him. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking. After all, now that the world is not ending every other Thursday, and the Winchesters can take it slow, there's no reason for Dean not to build Castiel a gazebo.
For four Sundays, Dean works on it, and for four Sundays Castiel watches him, but there are a lot of stuff still left unsaid between them. In this beautiful story, Castiel and Dean get the closure they need, and Dean Winchester finally uses his words like a normal-ish human being.

The Thirty-Six Questions That Lead to Love. M, Dean/Cas, 13k.
Canonverse fake relationship casefic featuring a lot of nonsense, a smattering of jealousy, intense conversations, and birdwatching. A long-belated birthday gift for the incomparable @remmyme!
Read on AO3.
“So I need you to be my gay dads,” says Claire.
Dean blinks.
This is not what he expected when Claire called to say she’d be swinging by the bunker to ask them for a favor. She’s already explained the case she’s working — series of ghost attacks at retreats for gay-married families or something, she’s trying to get into the next one and see if she can crack it — but this? This is —
“Come on,” he says, scowling. If she’s found the Supernatural book series — or God forbid, the online fanfiction — “We’re brothers.”
He glances at Sam for backup. But Sam’s making that face at him — that Dude, what? face — which promises no help. Beyond him Cas’s expression is perfectly neutral.
“Okay, one, gross,” says Claire. “And two, I mean you and Cas. Obviously.”
Right.
Cas is Claire’s actual dad. Only — not biologically. Only — yes biologically, but not — soul-ologically or some shit —
Which does nothing to answer the question of why he and Sam can’t go do this for Claire.
Except that the moment Dean thinks that, he hates it. For no reason he cares to name.
Besides, Cas’s powers are kind of on the fritz lately. Not that Dean doesn’t trust Sam to look out for him, he just — he’d like to do it himself. Cas is bad at watching his own back.
“Obviously,” he echoes.
Claire’s smile is knowing. “Good,” she says, too-sweetly, “because I already signed us up. Here’s the details. Next weekend. I’ll see you there.”
Keep reading on AO3.

The Complete Works of Emmanuel Allen
The Complete Works of Emmanuel Allen by violue (@violue) Rating: Explicit Word count: 56k
Dean Winchester, reluctant business owner, reluctant home owner, and reluctant cat owner, is striking up a very promising friendship with the author of his favorite book series. And he has no idea.
I could describe this fic in one word as peaceful. It’s just so comforting and soothing in a way that will leave you feeling at peace in the end.
After being away from home for over a decade, Dean finally returns to the small town of his childhood after his father dies. A lot has changed in Dean, so even if most of the faces are the same ones from when he used to live there, he still finds it hard to reconnect with anyone that’s not his brother.
There’s also another factor that contributes to the general feeling of inadequacy Dean has, which is his depression. It’s rare to find a fic that deals with that in such a raw way and the author doesn’t shy away from calling it what it is.
Then comes Castiel, recently arrived in town and also struggling to find his place in the world after living so long under his parents’ strict rules and having to write his supernatural books in secret even though that’s what he loves doing.
They find each other and it’s such a balanced relationship all the way through their journey from complete strangers trying to help each other, to supportive friends, to reliable lovers.
And yeah, seeing Dean fangirling about his favorite author to Castiel (from his tattoo, to his fanart and fanfic about SHE!) without realizing Cas is actually the one he’s talking about is just hilarious and sweet and just adds another layer of good feelings this fic will provide you.

And This, Your Living Kiss
And This, Your Living Kiss by opal_bullets Rating: Mature Word count: 56k
Only a very few people in the world know that the celebrated and reclusive poet Jack Allen is just Kansas mechanic Dean Winchester, a high school dropout with a few bucks to his name. Not that it matters anymore; life has left him so wrung out he never wants to pick up another pen. Until, that is, a string of coincidences leads Dean to auditing a poetry course with one Dr. Castiel Novak. The professor is wildly intelligent, devastatingly handsome…and just so happens to be academia’s foremost expert on the poetry of Jack Allen.
Who has never struggled with writer’s block? I certainly have so it was really easy to relate with Dean in this fic. Dean is a poet who publishes his works under the pseudonym of Jack Allen. That’s when he decides to move to Maple Hills to be closer to his brother.
Reading this fic was like sipping a warm tea while it’s raining outside and life seems to slow down for a moment. That’s what it feels following Dean’s life in the present while seeing glimpses of his past when he first discovered his love for writing. There are moments like when he first meets Charlie or finds his mother’s favorite book years after her death, that make it clear how difficult life has been for most of the characters, but there’s also so much hope and love present, it feels inspiring.
Back to the present, Dean is trying to get his groove back, and that’s when he meets Dr. Novak. Cas who is intimidating but clever and gorgeous and Dean feels immediately drawn to him. Oh, and Cas also happens to be a huge fan of Jack Allen! And even without knowing who Dean truly is, he recognizes how brilliant and loving Dean is despite all the pain he went through in his life.
I love how full of poetry this fic is, from the very first moments Dean finds his love for it, to when he feels like he has nothing more to give, to the way that ultimately brings him and Cas together. So if poetry is your thing, you’re gonna love this one.

there's no cell service in the afterlife
there’s no cell service in the afterlife by screamsintothesun Rating: Teen Word Count: 27k
Castiel is resurrected from The Empty. While Dean is recovering from casting the spell that brought him back, Cas checks his voicemail. Turns out, they both just might be able to say what it is they want.
Are you in the mood for having your heart ripped out and put through the wringer several times in the most excruciating way only to see it mended and healed, just bursting with relief and happiness, by the end of it?
Well, then you’re definitely at the right place!
Castiel has been trapped in the Empty for about three years at this point and finds himself saved by Dean right at the beginning of this story. And as Dean has to rest and regain his strength, the angel suddenly notices that there are a lot of unopened voicemails on his phone. All of them from the time while he was away.
What follows is Castiel experiencing first-hand how much Dean has unraveled without him within those years as the Winchester made a habit of calling Castiel’s phone and sharing everything he never dared saying out loud, the good and the bad. It’s Dean going on a dangerous downwards spiral, it’s Dean having some realizations about himself and the life he’s living, it’s Dean just talking about mundane things, and it’s Dean always eager to share this with Castiel, even though there was nobody on the other end of the line to listen to him.
I always thought it a shame in canon that Castiel never really learned how much Dean suffers whenever he dies (and it’s only in Supernatural that such things happen more than once 😆) and this story is depicting this specific topic in the most wonderful and heartbreaking manner.
You will cry and you will heal, alongside those two, and you will one-hundred percent be happy about that 💗
