We have almost made a full week of inktober with day five being “binoculars”! Now you’ve heard of people going bird watching but… what about birds people watching? Idk “binoculars” made me shake in my boots with how hard I was thinking

Day 4 of inktober and I got smacked in the face with the prompt “Exotic”. I sat there for a good 20 minutes trying to think of something and got a lightbulb moment of “I should finally draw Sleipner.” For those who don’t know Sleipner is an eight legged horse from Norse mythology that was born from the god of mischief Loki and is described as the best horse of the gods. He’s also foretold to be THE fastest creature in existence so I think I got exotic down pat with this fella.

This is the last of the little series turned info dump 20/20! Trilobites, ammonites, orthocerida and anomalocaris are all pretty early life forms. Trilobites- were the first group of animals to evolve complex eyes and their closest living relatives are the horseshoe crabs. Ammonites-as they grow they build new chambers into the shell, move their body into the biggest and newest chamber, and then block off their old smaller chamber with a wall called septa. Orthocerida-did the same thing and had a siphuncle. “The siphuncle is a tube that runs the entire length of the shell, through each of the chambers. This tube had two functions. Once filled with water, the nautiloid could force the water out, propelling itself backward with a kind of jet propulsion. By releasing the water and leaving air space, the tube could serve as a bouyancy device allowing the animal to rise and lower itself to different depths.“-https://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com/orthoceras.html . Anomalocaris- their name means unusual shrimp! A less cool fact is that they were one of the earliest known apex predators and were thought to prey on trilobites

Triassic cuddle! Buried and fossilized together in a burrow the protomammal Thrinaxodon and amphibian Broomistega are found laying on top of each other in their last moments. It’s unknown how they ended up like this but it’s believed that the Thrinaxodon was sleeping in a burrow either self made or stolen trying to get away from the blistering heat of the Triassic when a hurt Broomistega wandered in to escape death from drying out. The Broomistega had a few broken ribs and bite marks but neither fit the Thrinaxodon so the amphibian being food for the protomammal doesn’t really fit but not out of the possibility. While both were in the den it filled up with mud and water preserving their bones.

A saber tooth tiger! Also referred to as smilodon. They could open their mouth up to 120 degrees wide but their huge teeth were quite fragile. This leads scientists to believe that it tackled its prey before tearing into soft tissue with the big canines. Also it’s believed they went extinct due to their reliance on big prey animals and habitat changes :(

OK LOOK! I know it isn’t a dinosaur but the original idea for this series was mythical creatures and I had this idea drawn up for months and it wanted out of my head. Anyway unicorns were originally represented as donkeys, horses, and goats! The first recorded mention of a unicorn describes them as horse sized donkeys with white bodies, blue eyes, red heads, and a colorful horn around 1.5 feet. This was written in a western literature in the fourth century b.c. according to livescience.com. These tales were written from a second hand account on what Indian travelers saw and we believe now that they probably saw an Indian rhinoceros. Honestly sometimes I love when a huge historical game of telephone happens because we get stuff like this funky creature!

A three headed plesiosaur! Plesiosaurs had four flippers that functioned similarly to a dolphins flippers and is the only known creature to get around this way. These guys are completely aquatic and never ventured on land and are believed to have given birth to live young! The species are divided into two groups with group one, Pliosaurs, having long heads but short necks and group two, Plesiosauroids, having small heads on absurdly long necks. All together they are called plesiosauria :D

Happy late Father’s Day! Some fun facts about the Tyrannosaurus rex is that the females were bigger than males, paleontologist think baby T-Rex were born with a thin coat of downy feathers to keep warm, and they can only run about 10 miles per hour so about the average human runner! I put a chicken as the “child” of the dad T. rex because of the misconception that chickens directly came from them. The mix up is that birds in general evolved from dinosaurs and are more genetically similar to them than dinos are to living reptiles. :D

Titanoboa! Biggest snake to ever live getting up to 50 ft long and 3 ft wide. We can assume they spent most of their time in water and were pretty fast reaching 50 mph when needed which… yikes..I love snakes but that’s terrifying. I tried to achieve a galaxy look for the first time ever and idk I think it’s passable but I’m also tired lol.
