Tumblr media
Autobody Bridge Program: Session 5
Program Dates: February 7th - April 25th (12 Sessions)
When: Tuesdays 7-10pm
Where: Autobody Fine Art, Alameda, CA
Cost: $550
Application deadline: Rolling application deadline
** We will hold an Information Session on Tuesday January 17th, 7pm @ Autobody Fine Art**
Description:
With the cost of advanced degrees on the rise, the Autobody Bridge Program is designed to address the needs of young and emerging artists who are attempting to further their practice without necessarily attending a formal Graduate Program in Fine Arts.
And we want to make it as close to free as we possibly can!
Artists will be accepted two times a year.  Building upon work produced either independently, participants will learn to focus their aesthetic and sharpen their technical skills in ways that promote the personal artistic growth necessary for engaging the artworld on a professional level.  The program focuses (but is not limited to) the contemporary art practice of painting and drawing, and advocates the making, theory and discursive critique of objects produced by enrolled artists.
Artists will produce a comprehensive body of work under the guidance of the program facilitators in conjunction with artists’ studio visits, lectures and critiques. The Bridge Program provides intense immersion into the practice and profession of being an artist.  The program culminates in an exhibition that is conceived and curated by the artists with the support and advice of the program facilitators.
6-9 Artists per session
Individual Critiques and studio sessions on Tuesday evenings
Visiting Artist Lectures
Mid-Term Group Critique
Group Show at Autobody Fine Art the end of each session
Target Candidate:
Emerging artists who are considering graduate school or exhibition opportunities and are looking for something structured to help them produce a body of work.  Artists who have recently finished undergrad or grad school who are searching for the next step in their art career.

Notions of Romance at Vessel Gallery
Happy New Year!
I am thrilled to have a couple of paintings included in the "Notions of Romance" group show at Vessel Gallery in Oakland.
Notions of Romance
A Group Show
David Burke, Thekla Hammond, Gordon Glasgow, Diana Hobson,  Christy Kovacs, Walter James Mansfield, Kevan Jenson, Cyrus Tilton, Sanjay Vora
January 2 - February 14, 2015
Artist Reception and Murmur Opening: Friday, January 2, 6:00 - 9:00 PM
3rd Thursday:  January 22, 6-8PM, with Artist Talk and Tour at 6:45PM, Live music following What role does the contemporary visual artist play in conveying such messages of romance? What constitutes notions of romance?  Do these originate in the heart, the mind, from our physical selves? These artists suggest to the viewer that a range of experiences can elicit romance.  Is the act of making art romantic?  Do we project ideas of romance onto the subjects we view?  Do we personalize what we are seeing, what we want to see, feel, experience romantically?  Do we find romance in a place like a landscape? In the iconic rites of spring? In symbols? Or do we see it in objects of fancy?  Romantic notions: are they simply figments of our collective or individual imaginations?  Buried in memories, language, words, music, poetry, novels, movies. This collection of artworks helps us understand how notions of romance might be revealed.

Autobody Fine Art will be reopening on September 14th with an exhibition featuring new and emerging artists from the East Bay. It’s been a while since we’ve had a show up here under the Autobody label so we’re pulling out all the stops! Titled “Sugar”, the exhibition aims to examine the reasons and results of the creative process and question the attitudes and anxiety that audiences often exhibit when encountering the unfamiliar. The exhibition suggests that the creative environment, physical/conceptual, temporal/spiritual is the territory in dispute and that without the freedom to explore these arenas then art atrophies and cannot bear the weight of its own meaning. But the resolution of these issues in the production of an art object is sweet. Like sugar.

Slump Busting
How do you know if you're in a painting slump?  As a baseball player, I had hard statistics that let me know I was in a slump.  If I was had zero hits in my last twenty at bats, I knew I was in a slump.  Artistic slumps are more elusive, less quantifiable.  For the last month I found myself going through the motions in the studio.  When I was there, the space felt cold and foreign to me.  There were days when I would simply avoid it all together.  I decided that it was time to switch things up, pack up a mobile studio, and create my own residency in the mountains of Calaveras County.
Tumblr media
I spent one week in the open air of the mountains, painting, writing and meditating.  I created a loose structure for myself:  wake up, make coffee, write, and get to work.
Tumblr media
I tried to silence, or least muffle the inner critic, and just look, listen and paint.  Some days were extremely productive, others less so.
Tumblr media
There were no great epiphanies, and in the end I'm not sure I made anything that will stick in the long run.  The time and space of quiet solitude allowed me to clarify my intentions as an artist and a husband.  I identified some of the bad habits that I had established in my daily routine and attempted to create realistic goals to break those habits.
Tumblr media
This week was not about creating a finished product.  It was about getting back to making things and reminding myself why I love painting so much.

Super Hero Mural, West Oakland
I recently finished a mural underneath the 580 highway in West Oakland.  The mural is 20' x 180' and was completed in nineteen days.  I had an amazing crew of assistants consisting of local painters and graffiti artists.
Tumblr media
The mural is located on San Pablo Ave. between 35th St &  36th St. in West Oakland.
Tumblr media
The project was sponsored by the Attitudinal Healing Connection, a non-profit committed to building healthy communities and breaking the cycle of violence by providing platforms for creative expression and communication to children, youth, adults and families.  This is the first of a series six murals that will run along the Hoover Corridor in West Oakland.
