Dax had no idea how she knew someone in his family was actually into cacti, but the look on his face said he’d never heard of a sales pitch in his life until that moment. “Dude... are you clairvoyant? You can tell me, I won’t blab. Would you tell me more if I bought the book?” He shifted his eyes around them after asking in a hushed whisper. 

“Listen - “ Naomi started her pitch. Her uncle was far better at catching buyers’ attention, but she had to pull her weight here, right? “I know you have a family member who wants a book on Cacti. On Amazon, this baby retails for 15 bucks, soft cover. This is a mint condition hard cover book on Cacti for $1.50.”

“It makes me feel like I should get some exes so I can relate more to it. But I love the music video, I think it’s safe to say I’ve watched it at least twenty times. I still can’t get over Jennifer Coolidge’s cameo.”

Emerson took her wireless headphones off, placing them on the table in front of her. “Okay, but… why is ‘Thank U, Next’ such an absolute bop? I just can’t get over how perfect it is. You’ve seen the music video, right?”

“We need to stop,” he blurted, trying to avoid extending the conversation any longer. They were headed for a dark place if they were to continue. A place filled with knowing what needed to be done and not being able to follow through. “Don’t.” he muttered, feeling his stomach flip. “You took the mozzarella sticks for granted and paid the price. That one is on you, not the sticks.” Their conversation was making Aiden rather hungry, still eagerly awaiting their coming meal. “Yeah that’s the one. Hopefully the baby bro can make me proud. He rarely disappoints.”

“You’ve got a valid point.” Dax was well aware of the slippery slope, sometimes it got to be too much. Appearing as if he was self reflecting when hearing Aiden’s comment, he slowly started to nod. “You’re right dude, I can’t even blame them for that. I was too eager. Maybe I didn’t deserve them. -- How’s it going with her, aside from the psycho portion of things? I’m sure he will, he learns from the best, no?” Dax’s fleeting thought of undeserving mozzarella sticks quickly left his mind the second they got brought to the table. “They’re even more beautiful than I imagined.” He said to himself more or less, but he had a feeling Aiden would get it. With carefulness, he picked one up and remembered to actually chew this time around.

Yeah.” Saige nodded, squinting in thought. “That’s usually how I think about past relationships.” The fact that he actually knew the movie behind the reference actually kind of surprised her – not a lot of people had actually seen it, but he was right. “I love that song. Eighties music in general is just so… thematic. I love all of it. I love music that takes you somewhere. Even if it’s a neon roller rink. Or maybe especially if.” Smiling, she shifted in her spot until she was comfortable to settle in as she listened, picturing it all in her mind as he spoke. “I always wondered what the other side to that story was. You know, about what could’ve made her so vain. Icarus, he was taught how to fly and given his wings. I like to think Cepheus loved her so much, he spoiled her with his praise. Or maybe she didn’t get enough of it. Maybe Cepheus loved Andromeda more, and Cassiopeia was afraid.” Turning her head, she was sure she spotted a throne, excitement in her voice. “Look! There she is.” The stars reflected in her awe-filled eyes, lips curving into a smile. “You know what? She is beautiful.”

“Oh my god. That’s exactly it. The feeling.” He hadn’t been able to put it so eloquently, but of course Saige would’ve found a way to. “I’ve technically never been in a relationship, but I think the same way with the people I was involved with.” He admitted quietly. “A neon roller rink. That’s something that would’ve made a very stellar aesthetic for a date. With like Heaven Is A Place On Earth playing.” Dax smiled to himself at the drawn up scenario. “I think there’s a lot of factors that could’ve played into it, I definitely don’t buy into what they say happened. At least not it being so selfish like that.” Dax’s eyes followed her instructions and then turned to look over at her rather than the night’s sky. “Yeah, she is.” Only he was fixated looking at her still.

“ well, i’m pretty sure some idiot decked my car while i was trying to park outside and now i got thrown on the damn floor for a $7 blender while all i was trying to reach was the damn cappuccino box.” the blonde explained, ending with a dramatic sigh as she looked at her ruined jacket. “ —and now my jacket’s ruined. fantastic.” she rolled her eyes. 

“Dude, seriously?” Dax questioned in a near loss for words. “Why do people get so rowdy over cheap appliances? I’ll never understand society. I’m sorry your jacket’s ruined, though. Did they not even apologize?”

“Y’know, as much as I hate the flu, I’ll still take it over pneumonia any day.” Now that had to be the absolute worst, at least in Tessa’s opinion. But then again, when she got pneumonia, it was the absolute worst thing imaginable. It knocked her down for months. “But I agree. The flu can fuck off. All of these damn viruses can fuck off.”

“Shit, you’re right. I hear that’s the worst. How long did it take you to heal up from it?” Dax wondered, not exactly knowing if he’d vaguely recalled the healing process to be a lot longer than most in health class at one point in time. “You’d think since we go through flu season every year people would learn to cover their mouth when they coughed too. Or actually stay home to get better.”

“Yeah?” He’s surprised. He had no idea Dax was getting so busy. “Well, shit, dude. Maybe you’ve found it, you know. The fated ‘one’,” he tells his cousin. He doesn’t actually believe in that sort of thing but he entertains the thought of it sometimes for Dax’s sake. Also: they’re highschoolers. If the idea of ‘the one’ was kind of stupid to begin with, it’s even more stupid to apply it to fickle-minded teens. “You seeing her again soon?” He asks, a little curious. With his life so empty, Dax’s adventures are the most entertaining thing he’s got going for him.

“Dude. You think so? I guess only time will tell. And I’ll hope I don’t do something dumb enough in the meantime to sabotage it all.” He had a tendency to do just that out of fear alone. Not to even mention the unnecessary pressure he had to never get into a monogamous relationship. “I think so. She wants me to hang a lot lately.” It was a mixed bag of emotions for him, on one hand, he had a bad habit of being clingy to people, but once people were clingy to him, he had an en route of running from it. “You don’t think that’s too fast, do you?” Dax asked only knowing his cousin was much more rational than him.

Sometimes I dream like that.” Most of the time, even in her artistic brain, she was too grounded in her emotions to lose her grip on reality completely. “Well maybe they do, but I’m not from here and I love it. I’ve been waiting my whole life for someone to hold a boombox over their head outside my window for me.” It was 100% her just being jokey, but she also had a hard time imagining a scenario where it wouldn’t sweep her off her feet. “Okay, I’m down. What do you know about Cassiopeia? I’m curious.” She knew of the myth – in fact, she’d painted it before. But she wanted to hear his version of it.

“Exactly like that. It’s so weird, right? Sometimes I feel like I have memories where I’m seeing myself outside my body. It’s like my brain has got a faulty filing system.” Dax shrugged, not really knowing an exact explanation, but he did believe in astral projection. “I would totally Say Anything you. Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes is such a feel good song. Perfect choice for that scene.” Dax said adamantly with a nod. “Where to even begin.” Dax took a breath as he eyed the constellations above them. “Well, okay. Cassiopeia was always known as a vain or boastful queen, but it wasn’t just on herself, it was on her daughter. She said that Andromeda was more beautiful than all the nymph daughters of the sea god Nereus. This totally pissed off Poseidon so he took his wrath on flooding the country. Cassiopeia freaked out, and approached an oracle, which told her the only way to appease Poseidon was to sacrifice her daughter Andromeda. This is the major plot twist, after Andromeda’s mom chained her to a rock near the ocean for a sea monster to eat her, Perseus arrives to save Andromeda and kills the sea monster. Poseidon was even more pissed by this, so he placed Cassiopeia on a chained throne for the rest of her afterlife as punishment and symbolism that she’d have rather sacrificed her own daughter than herself. Hence why the constellation looks like her in a throne.” He said with a nod, taking a breath after the winded explanation.

“Some people do actually do that. Astral projection,” she named, like it was the most average thing in the world. “Why! I think it’s really neat,�� Saige shrugged. “Gooey marshmallows is basically my happy place. I could easily eat a dozen of these.” She stuck a big one to the rod Dax gave her, making sure it was on there snug enough where it wouldn’t fall off if she left it singeing and partially crispy like she wanted. “Okay. I have my stick, I have my marshmallows. Are we looking for specific constellations?”

“I think I sometimes do that like... a lot.” Dax said almost distractedly, thinking on times when he couldn’t exactly decipher fantasy from reality. “You do? I half thought most girls think it’s cheesy around here.” That’s why he didn’t allow most of his grand gestures to move past an idea. “I feel the same way about really really charcoaled covered marshmallows.” He admitted. Once he grabbed a candle of his own to light a flame to the marshmallow on the rod, he blew on it, then leaned back on the flannel blanket. “We should look for Cassiopeia. It’s easiest to find in November, and we stan a queen.” Dax teased with a nod.

“Oh no, what happened? Last time I went people were literally fist fighting over two dollar towels.”

“ — alright… remind me to never go out during black friday again.”

“Dude. I'm glad I’m not the only one. I get mine every year and still somehow get sick. I know you’re supposed to get the virus within the shot, but I get it like months later. The flu and all of it’s constant changing bacteria can really fuck off.”

“Here’s my PSA for the week… If you haven’t already gotten your flu shot this season, go get it. The flu’s not fun; and having to make up weeks worth of homework is even worse.” Tessa would know. She’d been out of the school the past two weeks with the flu, despite having gotten her flu shot. Talk about unfair. “And if you have already gotten your flu shot, thank you from all of us with shitty immune systems who still get sick despite getting the damn shot.” She knew she had to have contracted it from someone at school who hadn’t bothered with the shot yet. That was most likely the case; and it sucked that such a thing could so easily be prevented.
