Kind of Christmas
A Christmas song for folks who (like me) hate Christmas (or, more accurately, the very un-Christ-like “stuff” that surrounds the contemporary American approach to Christmas), I wrote this piece in 2018 as an antidote for the anxiety I feel every year around this time.

The Why
Every year the day I get the “testimonial” interviews back from the videographers takes me by surprise. It’s been a few weeks, by then, since the frenzy of preparations for DMGS3reached its zenith and quickly subsided and I crashed into bed with a huge, relieved sigh of “DONE!” and fell deeply asleep with a smile of gratitude on my face. So to have this reminder of the day arrive in my inbox is…

The Christmas song nobody ever thought I'd write
The Christmas song nobody ever thought I’d write
After last year’s Christmas post, one could be forgiven for responding to this news with a bit of (good-natured, I’d hope) ribbing, but:
I’ve just written a new Christmas song.
The world, you see, is full of un-beautiful stuff right now. And while I do still firmly believe that the contemporary American approach to Christmas is largely a manifestation of—if not even a source of—that stuff, I…

A bug in your ear
A bug in your ear
Psst.
Y’all know already that I hate Christmas*, and that I’m not a fan of calendar-based gift-giving. But I know that I represent a (vocal but lovable) minority in holding those positions—and anyway, the news I’m about to share with you kinda takes the idea of calendar-based giving and flips it on its head. So with only reluctant acknowledgment that “Black Friday” is hurtling our way.…
I’ve…

Why I keep coming out
Why I keep coming out
Senior yearbook photo, Dickinson College, 1993. Who’d’a thunk?
I am not good at holidays. I lack that (honorable, healthy, and near-universal) human characteristic that motivates people to schedule time off, to pause from daily routines, and to take special note of historical events on their anniversaries. So National Coming Out Day takes me by surprise when it rolls around on October 11 of…

Announcing: The "Second-Saturday" Audition Workshop series!
Announcing: The “Second-Saturday” Audition Workshop series!
Ask just about any professional performer what the most stressful part of their career is, and they’ll answer in one word: “Auditions.” We never get over it, somehow—no matter how long we’ve been doing theatre, no matter how well we know the material, no matter how “right” we know we are for the part, auditioning always seems to generate a special kind of stomach-knot.
That’s why I’m thrilled to…

And the winner is…
And the winner is…
I wrote the following as an “open-ish” letter to the cast of a high-school show I music-directed back in 2014, and originally shared it with them as a post to the cast Facebook group, on the day of the “Apollo Awards,” a local fundraiser event that mimics the Tony Awards, but for high-school musicals. Seems like every year at this time (and sometimes at other times) I feel an urge to revisit…

I hate Christmas.*
There are so many things I hate about Christmas, that I struggle to list them in order of hatedness. Granted, I can name three or four things I hate about Christmas at a moment’s notice, any day of the year, but when I really sit down to focus my un-charitability toward the holiday? Hoo boy. Look out. Consider:
I hate Late-October Christmas, in which jacks-o-lantern are chased away by (or in…

Six Questions (you should always know the answers to)
Six Questions (you should always know the answers to)
(My good friend, the amazingly and multi-facetedly impressive Sarah Jebian, recently asked some of her colleagues if they’d be willing to write blog posts that Sarah could share with her voice and acting students in her monthly newsletter. Here’s mine:)
I saw it coming. I knew a solid 8 bars before the high G# that it wasn’t going to come out. We had learned the notes and marked the breaths…

Why I want you to come see this show. (Yes, YOU.)
Why I want you to come see this show. (Yes, YOU.)
When I was 16, I came within a mile of killing myself.
A mile, or roughly two minutes. At the spot where the impulse struck me, on Route 175 in Columbia, MD, the roadside was all gently sloping grass—no trees or telephone poles or even concrete safety barriers to ram a car against. A mile further down the road, and I could have found any of those sturdy car-smashing targets—but before I got…

FUN HOME ticket sales are open!
It’s time it’s time it’s time it’s time!
Y’all. I am so. Excited.
I don’t have much time today—gotta run to rehearsal—but I wanted to be sure everyone knew that individual ticket sales for FUN HOME (and all other Season 32 shows at Open Stage) are open now!
If you’re not able to join us on October 7 for the UUCV/LGBT Center benefit performance, you can now purchase tickets for any of the other…

The new me!
If you’ve been paying close attention to my website over the last several days—because clearly there’s nothing else going on in the world that deserves your attention*—you’ll already have noticed that a few of the page banners have been updated with new photos.
A couple of months ago one of my students glanced at my website landing page, then up at me, and back again, and commented, “You know,…

Aaaaand, we’re off!
Great news! The final administrative hurdles have been vaulted, and ticket sales are now officially open for UUCV’s FUN HOME LGBT Center benefit program! If you missed the original announcement (and my gushing about how excited I am about this project), you can read that here. Or you could just take my word for it and submit this form today so you don’t miss this amazing production, or this…
