Research Proposal
1. Dataset Selection (1 point): I have selected a dataset that includes variables relevant to my research. Key variables are:
IDNUM: Unique identifier for each participant.
REGION: Census region (1 = Northeast, 2 = Midwest, 3 = South, 4 = West).
NUMPERS: Number of persons in the household (1–17).
FATHERIH: Whether the father of the respondent is in the household (1 = Yes, 2 = No).
MOTHERIH: Whether the mother of the respondent is in the household (1 = Yes, 2 = No). These variables are crucial for analyzing household structure and its effect on tobacco consumption.

17751 1-98. Cigarette(s) 262 99. Unknown
25080 BL. NA, never or unknown if ever smoked 100+ cigarettes
2. Research Question and Hypothesis (2 points):
Research Question: Does living with mom, dad, or both help reduce tobacco consumption?
Hypothesis: Living with one or both parents reduces tobacco consumption compared to not living with parents.
3. Literature Review Search Terms (1 point): To gather relevant information, I used the following search terms:
"Tobacco consumption and parental influence"
"Household structure and health behavior"
"Living with parents and smoking reduction"
4. References Identified (2 points): One of the references I used is:
PubMed Central Article PMC1446646. This article discusses the impact of parental presence in the household on health behaviors, including smoking habits.
5. Summary of Literature Review Findings (2 points): The literature indicates that parental presence in the household is associated with reduced tobacco consumption. Key findings include:
Households with parents exhibit more consistent supervision and healthier behavior modeling.
Variables such as the presence of both parents, the number of household members, and regional differences influence health-related behaviors like smoking. These findings provide a strong basis for exploring the hypothesis with the selected dataset.
