Dear Diary,  I'm feeling pure gratitude & astonishment! - - this peony, the first of the season, flourished in my black-thumb garden and today it reached a peak of glorious color and shape! Holy cow. A surge of delight, awe, tidals through me every time I see its velvety perfection.  Maybe the reason I (we) enjoy flowers so much is that to gaze upon them - - to breathe deeply the fragrance - - transports one completely; it's almost a celestial experience, a brief but profound respite from every worry. And I gladly drown in this humble reminder of the magnificent gifts given by the earth (we slowly destroy) and thank a God (I don't particularly believe in) for its small, spectacular, existence.  . Photo © Daryl-Ann Saunders (@da_saunders). 👉 FROM THE ARCHIVE: "The Stims (The Stimulators) were everywhere when I first started shooting at small, yet infamous) venues in NYC. I photographed them in a bunch of clubs and started joining them backstage before the show. That made a different group of images possible... personal, authentic. I was captivated by Harley, the 13 year old drummer; he was tough, snarly, Street smart, open-hearted and so, ok well, adorable (please don't hate me Harley for sayin so). Geez, that band could really cut loose. His mom, Rose, was with him at all shows. She would call sometimes to let me know where they were playing next, leaving a long, breathy message on my answering machine. I always always tried to make it if she called, even if it meant canceling work. She was great at PR and I think she got a kick out of having a female photog hanging around, documenting the band. A sort of built-in stardom. She invited me to crash at their place once when it was wayy too late to take the subway home to Flushing, Queens where I lived. I'm not sure how we ended up in the subway. Oh I do remember - - people were staring at us, watching us as I photographed him on the street, wondering if Dave was someone famous, etc. It was distracting, Dave looked uncomfortable, we couldn't connect and I could tell it would be impossible to reach anything genuine. When we went onto the subway platform, everything changed. The atmosphere quieted, there were very few people. It was just silence - -click - - talk a moment - - click. I watched him slide back into himself.
