The Importance of Controlled Breathing in Baseball
Tumblr media
A former All-American baseball player at the University of South Florida, Darren Stumberger earned a bachelor's degree in finance from the school, and later completed an MBA in the subject at Baruch College. Now residing in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, Darren Stumberger is a volunteer youth baseball coach who provides instruction to more than 1,500 kids per year, teaching valuable skills to help them perform better. In addition to his abilities on the field, baseball player Yogi Berra was known for his clever quips and funny quotes. He once said, "Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical." Ignoring the second half of the quote, there's truth in the notion that baseball is a game that requires mental toughness and fortitude. In fact, prior to the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, 27 of the league's 30 teams employed mental skills coaches. Compared to other sports like basketball and hockey, baseball has a lot of down time when players can reflect upon past plays and think about how they might approach their next at-bat. Staying calm and focused on the task at hand is critical during this time, and one of the best ways to reach that state is via controlled breathing. Focusing on the breath allows one to be present in the moment, devoid of thoughts that might otherwise affect hitting or fielding capabilities. Diaphragmatic breathing, in particular, can improve performance during games and practices. To do this, slowly inhale from the diaphragm and hold for 2 seconds before slowly exhaling through your mouth. The entire process should take 10 seconds.
