Critique Paper
I. Footnote to Youth By: Jose Garcia Villa
Early marriage should be stopped because it causes poverty and regret afterward. Teens in this generation are craving for love. Their primary reason for tying themselves in a knot of marriage is love. Think about the future and do not focus on the present.
II. The purpose of writing this critique paper is to voice out my opinions and point of view regarding the short story of Jose Garcia Villa entitled “Footnote to Youth” and to further emphasize the author’s message.
The critique methods used are bibliographical, historical, gender, psychological and sociological.
The significance of this story is that it can be an eye opener to the youth and provoke them not to rush themselves into a lifetime commitment and responsibility which they are still not prepared of.
III.
Bibliographical criticism, because it talks about the characters of the story and their life itself. Historical criticism, because it talks about a past life experience of the characters which also reflect our ancestor's life. Gender criticism, specifically feminist because of the statement that Teang has interminable work that kept her tied up. Psychological criticism, because as the antagonist is having this regret and embarrassed feeling as he saw and face his parents. Sociological criticism, because as Teang wondered that it would be better if she had married Lucio and she also thought that she had been wiser.
In terms of the coherency of the story, I think the author did a great job on constructing the ideas and uses an eye-catching relatable story that would definitely make the readers interested to read from beginning up to the end.
The explanation of the author’s point of view was reliable because he explains through his work on what could be the outcome if one’s teen ager commit to early marriage and who would be the severely affected by this action.
IV.
I must say that this short story of Jose Garcia Villa was really a masterpiece. A great relatable eye-catching story that one’s should not skip to read.
A successful marriage requires maturity and patience, which are often early marriage don’t have. Don’t rush because the longer you wait for something, the more you appreciate when you get it because anything worth having is definitely worth waiting for.
I might suggest that this story should be presented and use as a material for educating the youth.
