The Battiest Facts

For humans, it’s back-to-school season. For bats, however, it’s time to go back to their caves, along with their recently born bat pups. Here are some great facts about bats in honor of their return to the caves this August!

Some bats can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour.

Bat mothers are able to find their babies among other bats by recognizing their unique voices and scents.

Guano, or bat droppings, is one of the richest fertilizers.

Bats are the only mammals that can fly and some can even reach speeds up to 40 mph. They are not strong fliers, however.

Bats use echolocation to navigate through the dark.

Different species of bats live in caves, in dead trees, under rocks, in buildings - all over!

Bats can live anywhere between 10-30 years. The oldest known bat lived to 41 years old.

Bats usually have one pup a year, and sometimes they’ll even have twins.

Bats can digest food in just 20 minutes.

Bats enjoy grooming themselves. They even lick behind their ears.

Fun Vampire Fact; the reason that Vampires traditionally cannot see their reflections in a mirror is because mirrors used to be backed with a reflective layer of silver — which, as the metal of purity, would not ‘interact’ with Vampires, who are the Devil’s work.

However, modern mirrors have used aluminum as their reflective backing for many years now — and aluminum is not a ‘picky’ metal at all. So Vampires are able to see their reflections in modern mirrors.
