i've read a few books since i last did a reading update on here, but that doesn't matter. none of them matter, because i just powered through c.s. pacat's dark rise and dark heir over the last 24 hours, and i am going to throw up โ like, the kind of throw up where you've spent the entire day at an amusement park with adrenaline so fucking peak for too many hours and you can't possibly contain it all in one human body. it's uncommon these days that i find something that throws me into a violent fit of delight โ that nirvana state so much easier to reach in teenage years, but sometimes. sometimes.
i'm sure i wouldn't recommend it broadly (it's also not actually finished, and YA fantasy isn't everyone's cup of tea) but what i will say is that it felt like someone took every trope & tag i love and mixed it in a pot at a very low temperature. so as not to. burn fast. you know???? (ha ha) i actually read c.s. pacat's other series (captive prince) before this one, and while i did enjoy it after i pushed through the first book, this new series is just so much more. of everything. i'm still feeling foaming at the mouth crazy over it. i'll end this with one of my real kindle notes:

This week, I read a fic that was around 20 years old, which had originally been posted on the author's personal website and which she added to AO3 a few years ago. She listed her email address with the fic, so after I finished reading, I sent her an email saying how much I enjoyed the story, how much I appreciated the work and effort she obviously put into it, and thanked her for uploading it to AO3. She responded the next day and thanked me for my message, then said she had a few more stories in the same series that she hadn't gotten around to uploading. I checked this morning--she added a 35,000 word novella and thanked me in the summary.

every time i write i think about that maya angelou quote where she talks about her editor asking her why she uses semicolons instead of colons and says she has often responded by threatening to never speak to him again

Mr. M. R. Hadley is out of jail and will sell 18 pounds of sugar to any child capable of carrying it. Otherwise he will deliver in seventeen minutes. Not fifteen or twenty. Seventeen.
